Creative Lapland -project

1.Introduction

Creative Lapland -project is a project administrated by the Municipality of Rovaniemi. The project is an intensive marketing action for the new Santa’s Technology Park which will be built at the Arctic Circle in the immediate vicinity of the Rovaniemi
Airport. Santa’s Technology Park will be a place of expertise in creative contents. There will be content production companies such as a 3D-animation studio called the Lapland studio, with motion capture technique, situated in the new technology park. Santa’s Technology Park will be ready in July 2004.

The EU-funded Creative Lapland -project will cover the following costs
- Flight costs for the participants
- 3 months accommodation to the Japanese and European participants (every day necessities will not be covered).
- Office facilities in the new Santa’s Technology Park

2. Creative Lapland -project

The main objective of the project is to make Santa’s Technology Park known among technology parks and businesses in Japan and Europe and to build international business contacts and beneficial networks between companies participating in the project and operating in the field of content production i.e. game makers, anima-tors, cartoonists and computer graphic designers.

3.1. The main aims and actions of the project

 To invite representatives of content production companies from Europe and Japan to Santa’s Technology Park for three months. There will be three differ-ent groups during the project period and in each group there will be two par-ticipants from each partner area: Japan, Europe and the Rovaniemi region. During this time the participants have a possibility to:

• Work in an exceptionally innovative environment: at the Arctic Circle in a brand new technology park which is surrounded by beautiful Lappish nature.
• Meet and work with other international experts from the same field of industry.
• Visit local IT companies in the Rovaniemi region.
• To visit the University of Lapland and the Rovaniemi Polytechnic to get acquainted with teaching methods, faculties etc. related to Information Technology ,Content Production and Industrial Design.
• To participate in a study trip to some other part of Finland (will be cho-sen later) which has been successful in creative contents and produc-tions.

 It is desirable that the products and the work which is developed during the stay in Rovaniemi would be related to some of the factors typical to Lapland; Nature, Christmas, Santa Claus, Reindeer, Aurora Borealis, 24 hour sunlight/ i.e. midnight sun, Arctic Circle etc.

 Since marketing of the Santa’s Technology Park is one of the main ideas of the Creative Lapland –project, the participants from Europe and Japan are asked to be in constant contact with the media in their home country in order to report and give information about the Creative Lapland -project, Santa’s Technology Park and Rovaniemi region in general.

 To develop the built relationships and networks into business partnerships in the future.

4. Lapland studio

Lapland studio will work with highly advanced technologies in 3D animation film
industry. Associated to a classical 3D studio, 2 stages of motion capture assure a very high level of productivity. Lapland Studio will also become Kaydara’s teaching centre. The size of the studio is 341 m˛.
