This was a fun painting to do. I was given a way cool character sketch by Jose Saenz, as well as a rough idea of the layout the client wanted, and told to render it as a theatrical poster.

~4000 pixels wide (need more RAM!). Several nights of work in Photo-Paint 10.

Thanks for looking.

I love the flaming jack-o-lantern! Other than that, I laughed out loud when I saw it. It's great!

Awesome picture and great details. The moon is huge and is a wonderful backdrop. Love the horse's skinny legs. One question -- looks like somebody else's arm with a webbed hand in chains. What is it?

Huge thanks guys!

ilikesoup: I'm not quite sure which part you mean . . . there's a chain leading down towards the horsedude's knee, and another one from the reins to the top of the horse's blanket.

CONGRATS ! This is soooo good, the sketch is great and I love the exaggeration. Your paint skills rock though, and the dramatic lighting is really effective. That's some crazy details in the leaves, hope you didn't go nutty filling those in :)

Here's the sketch I was provided:

Good paintings usually come from good drawings, and I think Jose did a very nice job on the drawing, yeah?

Thanks again for the feedback guys.

Hey there,

Wonderful painting, esp the silhouette. The horse is undeniably strong. The only comment that I'd make would be that the head is a little hard to read as absent from the shoulders. Could use some localized light around to square off the top, and also the fall of the cape doesn't really help the readability. Small things, obviously to say about this fantasic work.:)

Hey balistic, I loooove this piece a lot. Its beautiifully painted and looks awesome.....seriously! I do agree with BigSky though about the impression of it being headless. When I first saw it, it looked to me like the cape is over the head. After I saw the sketch it was a bit more clear to me that its headless. But I think its the lump in the cape that throws it off. Great job though, it all works!

In hindsight, I agree with those who mentioned that the billows at the neck of the cape look like they could conceal a head. Definitely something I'll watch out for the next time I paint a headless character ;)

Thanks again everyone.

Awesome, totally awesome. The silhouette is done so well, you can see just enough detail to keep things spooky and foreboding. And the flames? *shakes head* Unbelievable.

DOn't know if this has been posted yet, but the first time I looked at the picture, it looked like his cape was over his head... After seeing the sketch I noticed how it should be. But first impression was not a headless guy :) Amazing lighting and paintwork, technique superb!

lovely stuff balistic,

how much use do you make of the mouse when painting? i'm still getting to grips using my wacom beyond sketching and non - detail stuff - i tend to chicken out and use the mouse on really fine stuff - particularly sillouettes / sharp boundaries.

anyway, nice stuff - keep it up

Thanks! I never touch the mouse when painting anymore, except when doing non-painterly stuff, like adjusting sliders. Sometimes for work that needs to be really precise, you can put a sheet of paper between your tablet and stylus. This will add a bit of friction, and you'll have better control than you would on just the bare tablet surface. I generally keep a big sheet of illustration board around for this purpose, since regular copy paper wears out after a relatively short time on the wacom.

Try using some paper for traction . . . you might be surprised at how much more pencil-like your Wacom suddenly feels.

I'm so glad that this piece was so well received. Brian was highly recommended by a mutual friend and after seeing some samples of his work on his web site, I was confident that the drawing was in good hands. I agree with what was previously said. The sketch is pretty cool, but the painting adds so much more. You can imagine how hyped I was when I saw my drawing having been taken from sketch to a masterpiece. I thought, "I wish this dude could paint all my drawings". I was fortunate enough to have the company I work for commission Brian. He's currently doing more stuff for us....which should also look really cool, although this last one has the most fun subject matter I think. Anyway Brian, keep up the good work.

-jose saenz

P.S. maybe it's because I'm so amazed with the painting, but I don't know what those dudes are talking about in regards to the cape and head thing....I just don't see it....looks perfect to me.
