it looks good so far, but I would spend more time in the beginning roughing out the shape then doing Global Illumination renderings....el diablo

very good work, beautiful details, hope to see the entire body soon

Wiro

I love the techie stuff on that head! It looks even better than in the sketch (it ususally is the other way around for me...)

I aggree with el diablo though...you should rough out the whole body first instead of going into too much detail in one part. It might just be your preferred workflow but I tend to find it more helpful to see the whole figure to visualize proportions better.

Great work!

Wiro ! Woah dude, didn't even realise that was you.
I don't know if you remember me, btu we chatted
AGES ag, like 2-3 years ago, before you moved to
your company.

Anyway, AWESOME pirate model, saw a mate of
mine at work looking at it, wondered who had
done it.

Anyway thanks for the tip. I agree with you, although
I am kinda doing the dude bit by bit when I get a
chance.

Thanks for the comments though.

VERY GOOD.

02-01-2002, 05:37 AM
Dave, as usual great stuff. All your work is excellent. I am wondering about the render though. Are you using LW's out of the box renderer?

DaveWilson
02-01-2002, 11:51 AM
Hey All, just to answer your questions...

[el Diablo]
I often model and then in the background set a GI
Render going, I find rendering often helps me realise
where things are going to be / not giong to be seen,
see if surfaces are looking good i.e. Smooth, Continous,
it doesn't slow me down really, so while I am modelling
in the background I am rendering.

[Paul]
Hmmmm, dunno, kinda like the chin, but I'll give it a bash
easy enough to see.

[KOlson]
Thanks !! and yeah, it is Straight out of the box Lightwave
renderer, GI (MonteCarlo), use " The Done " Technique
:D

Will post more images soon.

I see all the PRO's answering u'r post man.
Before I ment u should make the chin shraper.
Oh and bout u'r tarantula.....well..we all know what is to be said.

Texturing ob that is.....:D

WIRO-if u read this, I've been really trying to contact u man.I wanted to thank u for u'r fabulous tuts on u'r site THEY help a LOT. The texturing tut is simply GOOOOOD.For all of u who are beginners I suggest u take a look at this man's site!!!!

Great work Dave

Wiro
02-01-2002, 10:16 PM
Heya Raul...cool you found my tuts useful :)

Which addy did you use to contact me? I think the one on my site doesn't work any longer (yeah, yeah, I WILL update the site soon *g*). wiro@secondreality.ch works fine though.

I'm aware that there are tons of dead picture links in the texturing tuts (makes them kinda useless I'd think...). Will fix them this weekend. promise! :)

Oops, sorry for hijacking your thread Dave!

I've "met" so many people online that I don't always remember the names and handles, hope you don't take offence :)
The name Dave Wilson does ring a bell though. Hm, 2-3 years ago I hardly ever used IRC or ICQ...do you mean on Usenet? I was frequently on alt.3d.studio and the other max usenet newsgroup. Might have met you there.

By the way, cool website you have! Sci-fi...mhhhm, yummy :)

Dave,

I really love your work, always did.
Could u tell a little more of the rendering technique?

DaveWilson
02-02-2002, 03:15 AM
Pensart, just the out of the box Lightwave render.
Using Global Illumination (Radiosity)
The infamous "Luminous Dome & No Lights"
Lots of RayTraced Reflections

Wiro, actually dude it was ages ago, just email.
I found your "Restoration" was it ? The Bot hanging
broken, still one of my favourite images.
Don't worry I struggle to remember everyone too.

Zpit, yeah will do motion, after all the modelling and
texturing is done though. Cool animations in mind !!

Nice work Dave.. i like the Starwars touch you have.. and all these little details in the neck.. cool! I recognized your style at first sight, you are the one who did this cool two legged robot, right? And the spider robot looks great too! You should submit your site to Jean Eric ;)

DaveWilson
02-04-2002, 03:35 AM
Woah ! Pascal, coming from you I'll take that as QUITE
the compliment, I have admired your work for AGES!!
And, yeah, the two legged robot, Seth ! He's mine, *grin*

Do you mean submit my site to Jean Eric to be featured
on CG Channel ? That would be cool... ;) But I'm gonna
be making some big updates in a week or so, so I'll
wait till then.

Also, I'm gonna post an update of my assassin tommorrow

Hey Dave, love your work. You used to work at Atomic, am I right?
Keep up the good work

I was one of the founders of the company actually, but

Dude don't get to flustered about the talent thing,

Hmmm, that must be why I saw your name on one of their demo tapes. Is it a good company to work for? Why did you leave the company? Sorry for all the questions...I guess you can work out why I'm asking them.

:p I was only kidding about the talent thing. It's just another way of getting my work out there for people to see. :o Thanks for the compliment. I think there are brilliant 3d artists here in South Africa. Not all of them post their images for other to see.

DaveWilson

Atomic does good work, I don't really know too much what
they are up to, we kinda had a falling out when I told
them I was leaving, they were'nt very nice to me *grin*

So I know the quality of work is good, well it was when
I was there, I'm sure it still is, but I refrain from offering
my comments on their ethics or the way they treat people.
But hey, that's JUST MY OPINION.

Sure, I understand. I'm more interested in how one can grow in the company than what the people are like. I was thinking career wise...but I guess you've answered that. :)

considering i worked on Episode One and was in and out of Dennis's office when they had the various designs of Doug's up on the walls, i would have to concur that the design is awfully, awfully close to some Battle 'Droid prelim sketches.

Uh...... is that a good or a bad thing ? VERY COOL that you
worked on episode one. Unfortunately for me I never got
near Denni's office :D , so I never saw the prelim sketches, he he.
Wish I had. To be honest I think the thing that makes it look like
one of those droid is it's mask, and to be REALLY honest, it's
based on the Predator movies.

Dave, I was lookin at the progress u made,IMPRESSIVE but one thing still bugs me, how are u gona move his arms he looks VERY rigid.

Very cool body, I already like his stance.I mean the way he holds his head, he looks like me.I'm 16 and hold my exactly like that when I'm workin.

Many of Doug's sketches and production paintings made it into the "Art of Episode I" book that was in almost every bookstore when Ep I was released almost 3 years back.

Not making any accusations, just stating a fact that many of said designs were not limited to viewings in Dennis' office.

AJ
02-06-2002, 11:49 PM
I have that book. And looking through, I can't see any of the conceptual designs that match Dave's current bot...

Aside from the head, which obviously looks similar to the Star Wars droids design. I can't see anything in the book that truely resembles this character...

Excellent work Dave, I hope you don't get bogged down by this slew of "anti-dave" posts popping up!

_I_ never made any accusations. My fault for bringing it up as by just mentioning it, you people immediately looked for comparisons. I stated that there was a format widely available to all where Doug's designs appeared in _other_ than Dennis's office.

Being an industrial designer by training and profession, I have my own opinion of the originality of Dave's proficient work.

AJ
02-07-2002, 04:11 AM
triggerburger, my apologies - I could see the point you were trying to make, my reference was leaning toward other posts (which have now been removed thankfully), which made a similar reference to the book. It was these posts that made me (naturally) look for a similar design... not yours. Once again, no accusations at you - and I'm sorry because I can see that it would come off that way. :(

Okay, hopefully we ignore all this and look forward to more Updates from Mr. Wilson!! :D

Hurrah!

Matt_Forcum

seriously guys, robots of a similar style will look SIMILAR. Its kinda funny how that happens isnt it. there is a night and day difference between an influence, and a rip. and people need to realize this before they go pointing fingers.

Everyone who has done a robot since Star Wars, has been, whether they like it or not, influenced by the designs. Its what you do with those influences that matters.

now lets move on! :D
