View Full Version : scaling multiple faces on local axis
yofreetime 06-17-2004, 05:29 AM Does anyone know how to scale multiple faces at the same time on the local axis in Maya?
For example: create a sphere. select a few non-touching faces. extrude faces. now try to scale them on just one axis. they all tend to skew terribly. here are a few examples.

Thanks for your help,

double click move tool to open settings, click on local instead of world and you should be good to go

unfortunately maya is not smart enough for that..
i think it always takes the local axis from the last selected face to do the calculation :(
i missed that feature very often as well..
hope someone knows better and tells me how to do it.

Well,I think Maya is smart enough for that.;)
You have to use the "move component" tool for that instead of the transform tool. It's under the "edit polygons" menu.

did the thing i suggest not work then? It worked for me.
the move component only works on vertices, wonder why?
edit:
i get this error when i try to move faces with move component
// Error: polyMoveVertex works on polygonal vertices. //
and in the helpline it says you can move vertices, faces and edges this is weird!

hmmm. strange bug, seems to be fixed now

it seems to work, if you select the faces as close to each other as you did.. try selecting some really facing in very different directions and having different shapes..
to be honest i barely use the move component tool, but that gives exactely the same result to me as the moving after the extrusion (in fact it looks to me as if the poly extrude uses exactely that tool itself...)
here is what i mean.. select those three faces one after the other (starting with the right one)
in the lower image i scaled in x-axis and see what happens to the first selected face.. that is not local scale to me.

to be honest, this tool is not that great (far from smart) , but you can apply it on vertices, edges and faces, so in your case you can select the right edges and move them ...
ok..... not smart at all:)
but better than nothing
