Ill be back with updates later.

Thanks!

I started modeling the head tonight, I tried to keep it under 450 polys.

This is what I have so far

Looking good. The Shredder was the first character I ever tried to model. I hope yours turns out better than mine did.

Just a thought - you might want to angle the helmet out, a bit. It's looking a bit scrawny, right now.

yea I ended up beafing it up after looking at it. I was concentrating on the geometry and forgot about the proportion

thanks!

ill some new updates soon

hehe I know Shredder isn't the most original/ coolest baddies around, but I thought it would be fun. Definetly for next competition I will do something more original. I'm just glad to be a part of this community finally. Anyways I was really motivated to keep going with the model when I woke up. Most of my time is with making sure I'm using every triangle to its potential (which I'm not by a longshot, but its getting there) Crits are much appreciated. Thanks!

Judging by the ref pics I'd say you need to increase the size of his helmet and pull verts on it further away from the head. I think you could cut back on some areas to add on those pieces of armor you still need to throw on. Parts of the body that are very smooth at the moment may not even be seen once those are on.

Nice work so far.

Thanks! I definetly need to make the helmet bigger, that was one of the things on my to do list. As for lightening up the poly count in some areas I def agree. Thanks again... I'll be back with an update later

ahh man making this model is harder than I thought. This is the first time I took on creating a game model (which is pretty stupid seein as how I want to end up in the business, anyways thats a whole nother story lol) Anyways I'm glad I'm finally back on track. Right now I'm running out of room and I still need to add a few things. I only have 12 triangles left to work with! AHHHH! Man this is fun though.

Any idea's on how to drop some triangles?

I gunnah take a break and watch Learning Character Animation with Jeff Lew. It just came in I can't wait to sink my teeth into it.

Thanks again for everyone's interest. With so many other great entries this competition is alot of fun!

I need to put all of the spikes on his armor, but I'm not quite sure on how to do it. If I model each spike with the lowest amount of triangles possible (12) they add up to 216 triangles. Is there an easier way to do it such as opacity maps and if so would you be able to see the spikes from both sides?

edit : I actually solved the problem with help from Anurizm, thanks!

this is pretty much the first time I'm unwrapping the textures and everything, so its a learning process for me. I only did the bottom half so far.

Great progress! I have to say, though - I think that the head is a little too big, but the helmet is too small. The big head actually emphasizes the tiny helmet-feel. You might try bringing the lower part of the helmet out more, and have the sides pull out, as well. It should wrap around, and enclose the head, but there should be space between it and the skull, like a football helmet. That's my take on it anyway. Hope it helps. I love what you are doing with the rest of the armor.

After looking at the model a while, you begin to miss things like that, thanks alot for the help. I went back and changed it like you said and I think it looks better now. Now I hafta redo some of the texturing I did (just unpackin) but its worth it. Thanks!

ok so I think my second go around with unwrapping the model is going much better than before.... I think. This is my first time I am really paying attention to everything, and I just wanna make sure I'm doing it right. So if something looks really wrong or out of place, please let me know :D. I really do appreciate all the help.

Anyways, this is what I have so far tonight :

Thanks guys :)

I just realized something .... Was I supposed to texture only half the model and then flip it over so I have more room on the 1024 x 1024 texture for details etc? ...... wow im a noob *doh*

DougG
06-26-2004, 09:16 PM
I decided to go ahead because the textures arent going to be symetrical anyways.

I finished unwraping the model and started with the normal map.

My problem is that after I get the normal map (I'm using orb) and stick it in the bump map with Gnormal, my model becomes faceted and really ugly. For now I'm just going to use the Normal map in the bump map slot, but I would really like to figure out the problem. Anyone know how to solve this?

Here's a picture to better explain :

Looking good - the most complete looking model so far - however, i think his hands and feet are waaaay too long. I should fix them before you proceed any further.
Nice to see your making a tougher shredder, rather than the camp one that was in the original cartoon...

Andy H,, :scream::eek::cry: how COULD YOU KNOCK THE OLD SHREDDER!?! ERRRRRR!

Jo|{eR great progress man, as before keep going in full stride dude..;)

DougG
06-27-2004, 01:04 AM
Thanks :D

Andy H - I tried making both hands and feet a bit smaller, but to me it just didnt look right. I really want this model to look and feel powerful, and when I made the hands and feet smaller I felt it took away from that. Or maybe I've just been looking at the model too long heh.

I worked on rearranging the uv's and I got the textures to line up better and I started on the back detail. Just workin on the bump map right now, after Im done Ill start on the diffuse map.

post the model with the texture on it with 100 self ilumination (sp?) so we can actually see the texture :D

also his arms look broken becuse at the elbow the arm beds up and that is not posstble in that position i was going to do a draw over but i got to lasy... ( tho its pob fixed now that it is riged)

DougG
06-28-2004, 02:10 AM
hehe, I actually went back and fixed some of the texturing (although its far from being finished) Plus I got the normal map working, but its still not how I like it.

is that blue steel i thought maybe you would do the stainless steel version from the good ol days you know the armor he used to see reflections like in the comics when he almost kill don but then decide to hold him for ransom

I really wanted to dirty shredder up and make him look.. err well dirty. I worked on the texture a bit this morning, but unfortunately I wont be able to work on him for the next few days. I have alot of other stuff to catch up on. Thanks again for the support :D

btw i know the seams in the hands really suck... thats on my todo list

Good stuff! You've come a long way, man! I think the texture kinda blends, too much, though. Maybe give it some artificial shadow on the armor, for definition. Right now, you can't really see the different sections of the torso.

DougG
06-29-2004, 06:30 AM
I fixed the textures shadowing and overall feel, I also cleaned up all those nasty black lines I was getting around all teh seams. Ended up being my border on the map was too far into the texture.. fixed it up pretty easily. Ill try to throw an update up later or tomorrow.

I learned so much from this competition so far its not even funny.

Looking good!
Perhaps you should do something with the the round reth thing on his belt. Im not shore if this "something should be done with texture or moddeling, but i think that it, right now looks a little to much like a flattened cylinder.

But thats just one detail. The averall feeling is nice!

As for the round thing on the belt, I'm not quite sure on what to do with that. Its part of the design of the belt and wanted to add it. I'll see if I can come up with a better solution.

shorten the feet and hands.... please! Its really putting me off it! Nice texture work, and a good look, but those freakish fingers and feet stand out for me....

DougG
07-02-2004, 01:50 PM
Thanks :)

haha I'll see what I can do about those freakish hands and feet

.. I know they are a little long, but for some reason I like it that way. I mean teh hands are maybe only an inch too long... and same thing with the feet. The boots are bigger than the actual foot. Ahh hell maybe I'll name him Donkey Shredder.

I really wish I had time to fiddle around with it and go back, unfortunately I'm going away this weekend and won't be able to work on it. With any luck I'll be able to get on a friends computer to post the final images.

Looking pretty good, but I think it could use a bit more punch. Try exaggerating the size of his armour a smidgen. I think the helmet seems a bit too small - or rather, too close to his head, like it's .5mm sheet metal right up against his head. It should be big enough to fit some padding and straps and so on under there.

I think it would also look better if it flared out a touch more at the bottom, and if the blade-thing at the top was much bigger. I remember from the old TMNT days that thing went all the way around his head, and behind it, sticking out the back about 4 inches.

Also, exaggerate the size of his greaves and braces, and the blades on them. Make him more mean looking!

Textures are looking good, if a bit plain - I'm a little confused by what's going on with his face, around the eyes.

Hrmm I wish I had time to go back and use all of these suggestions, but unfortunately I'm away from my pc this weekend and just waiting to post what I had done from a few days ago in the final submission thread. Next competition I'll take my time making sure the model is as good as it can be before moving on to texturing etc. Thanks again everyone, I can't wait to see all the final submissions.

Very Nice work...

One thing ( small ) I would maybe give his hands a slight (grasp like) form.. so they are not so straight...

Just my 2 cents

gr8 work though:):D
