I think that should be doable with volume hypervoxels.

You could buy the Ogo-hikari or whatever it was called plug-in that was used to make that image. It was really cheap. I think that the atmosphere plug-in was eventually released. I can't remember, try searching flay.com for OGO or even this mesage board.
