This my first vehicle ever, and i'm pretty new to max so i'lll try to explian what's going on as best as i can describe with pictures.

Here is a pic of the door before meshSmooth:

here is after MeshSmooth with iterations set at 2:

No amount of iteration seems to fix it.. if you look at the upperleft corner of the door, it's pretty bad, and i don't understand it, here's a wire closeup:

Here's a pic after meshSmooth without edges showing with opacity at 50%:

I put a small chamfer all the way around the door frame, and i've tried it without the chamfer, i get the same results. it looks terrible and it's driving me nuts, any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

i've tried rebuilding the polys...

it looks to me like you've just got some extra verts in there. perhaps there are some things that need to be welded together etc.

a good test would be to drag-select over what yu think should be a single vertex and then check the modifier panel for how many are actually selected. if it is more then one, then just hit the weld button, and they should be joined together, eliminating the problem.

other then this, we would probably need to see a close up of the problem area pre-meshsmooth.

on a side note, it looks to me like the mesh overall couls use a little work if it is your goal to use meshsmooth on the final result. those terminating edges on the middle of the door and around the window edges will most likely cause bumps in teh mesh after smoothing, which will show up in the reflections on the car paint.

thank you very much Capn!! i rebuilt the polys and removed the chamfer from the door, it looks good now. i'd post a pic but my host is down... again... it's free so i can't complain too much.

i really appreciate your feedback, the tutorial is thorough on some issues, but very vague on others, i'm at the end of step 9 of Karabo's fiat500 tutorial, (http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials/fiat500/fiat500_m09.asp), and i'm tweeking my fiat to look similar. if you know of any other car tutorials, or mesh paint tutorials lemme know please :)

thanks again

Cheers
Duff

PS, how do i test to see if the edges mid-door and around the window will cause bumps or not? i dunno how to paint, or render other than max's default renderer. i mean, i know how to add a material to a mesh, i just don't know how to render to make it look all shiny and semi-real.
