"In the middle of nowhere" by ShieldMaiden

Posted Monday June 15TH 2004: 10:00US EST

Welcome to the cgtalk sketch group.

We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.

These are the rules:
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* 640 x 480 or 480 x 640
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" o plagiarizing.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Good luck

-Roberto

I am the kind of guy that loves to be in the middle of nowhere, nothing but a 40 pounds backpack and some buddies, nearest human being at least 3 days away, that feeling is immense. This topic was quite appealing to me.

I don't really like this one, and I have better ideas in my head, so if I can manage to stop being lazy I might do another one.

Ahaha Omg.. :P These entires rock.

iamintricate: the high chroma really helps out in this image, altho im a bit ocnfused on that shadow on the ground, it is still very solid, the curving might fight against it though and gives a sense of depth rather than infinite (connotation for no where?) good stuff!

pasto: you getp oints for including a learning maya book :P lol love the line work (: very nice overall and nice coloring, simple and to the point. nice

pearblossom: thats a very nice image, and i can see the atmosphere you're aiming for. very nice, i think the washed out colors help it out a lot. what throws me off is the background o nthe left, wherei t feels a bit to oopen and it flattens the image.. - its a little distracting, but other than that good work (:

nicknitro: i dont know about using photographs, i tend to stick more to painting since it is a sketch forum :\ but nonetheless, great atmosphere and godo composition :)it feels a little awkard though, or the persepctive seems strange.. like it hsould be up more? hmm. good stuff (:

mbalestrini: AWESOME thats all i can say lol. soryr i love that painting style. tons of feel and form from simple shapes. hehe good work!

jay007: hehe cool idea (: maybe fix little lighting here or there or add a sun.. i just always get a bit confused in space drawings o_O..

drawMonger: ooh i can seew hat you're going for here! its very nice in deed, altho the bototm left it seems a bit odd in persepctive? i cant pinpoint it.. or maybe if on that blue you made it darker so we could see endless passage ways i guess? very cool nonetheless (: and godo use of color/atompshere here too!

Scott Harris: you're evil :P

and the dot is too high.. too red, and to oround.

:P jk good idea tho (:

(what's scay is I've seen work liek that onsale at the Guggenhiem and other places ofr like 40k lol.. :P)

Bytehawk: beautiful man! although i'd want to go with more vivd colors personally on the flower, or maybe darker ones? my lcd makes a few problems with colors but it looks real good but i'd go for an extreme, personal prefence for me iguess no idea :P good work tho and awesome idea ! (;

Garma: haha :P lovely man, lovely :) i cant tell uc where the horizon is.. i guess thats a good thing tho, but icant tell hmm. awesome coloring tho!

Scott: lol, awesome I liek it ! :0

Cyro: nice evil drawing i like!

Matthew-S: you rock. thats it. I cant say anything else. like. im just amazed at that brush detail you've brought in in such little time (: awesome!

alriught now i gotta go draw :P

Hi
This is an image I did in acrylic it took me about 2 hours, I spent about 15 min in Photoshop cleaning up and messing with it.
It is supposed to be a metaphorical and symbolic account of depression, which fits in with the in the middle of nowhere theme.
I haven't got a tablet unfortunately, but I am definitely going to get one now I see the look and quality of everybody's work on this site.

oh I didn't think my pic is that good

I wanna thank everyone of you guys u are very kind, and good works in here so keep up the good work guys. :)

iamintricate, The texture and brushes is a tecnique that Craig Mullins have been experimenting with and a tecnique some guys in the speedy in Sijun started to fool around with aswell including me too.
First of all u are doing a speed sketch with the original brush which after u are adding an old painting above it to give texture, after that there is a lot of things that can be experimented with. The layers adjustment settings is one of them and with those settings u can change the whole of the picture.
Some guys are just using soft light in the layer but all of layers can be used if it is something special u are looking for in the picture.

This tecnique is also explained in wasssup's tutorial which I find to be a very good tutorial.

http://www.supalette.com/nuke/html/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=4

I guess at first this kind of tecnique can seem to be cheapish but it really helps with speeding things up and give it a more of a finished look. I hope my explanation helps here.

have a nice day

Shotty... there's nothing to be sorry for. Sure there's alot of people here that are incredibly awesome at painting, but none have stopped learning new things. The only thing you'd have to be sorry for is if you didn't care to improve.

Not that I'm one to critique, but for a first, your image isn't bad. 'Sides, this is a .sketch. group... not a 'final render group.' Keep workin at it man... you don't get better unless you try. Most people started out coloring outside of the lines in a coloring book.

That's awesome! Nice work!

I like your way of using colors! The blueish gray with the warm
brown tones works pretty well!
The composition is lagging a bit. The guy is way too big
in relation to the rocks. The rocks look really huge.
But anyways I see great painting skills in your sketches!

I now pray to the Sketching Gods known as Goro, zzacmann and Telemaco. Now hiring for various demi-god positions. Apply within.

btw I really like the different way that each interpreted "In the middle of nowhere".
Goro's scene is barren and his character looks like he was placed there and his survival isn't guaranteed.
zzacmann's boy is also alone under a shady tree on a lush hill. The hill looks steep, but it looks like the start of an adventure.
Telemaco's man looks like he wants for nothing.

Awesome job, guys.
