View Full Version : Are Zbrush's layers anything like Photoshop's?

So far I've been largely disappointed with layers in Zbrush 2. I was expecting something along the lines of layers in Photoshop, but the layers in Zbrsh seem to be more modeling oriented.

Am I just a confused n00b? Please tell me Zbrush's layers aren't as basic as they appear.

I really just want something similar to the opacity slider, but zbrush seems to be lacking that.

Layers really can't work in ZBrush the same as in programs like Photoshop. All of ZBrush's layers co-exist in the same 3D space. Each layer has depth information since ZBrush uses depth enriched 'pixols' as they call them to give each layer a 'Z' factor. That being the case, there's no way to truly 'stack' them in the fashion that you would for Photoshop. Photoshop's layers are truly 2D planes that can be shuffled in their order like a deck of cards. In ZBrush opacity changes are usually going to be best achieved through adjusting material settings instead of layer settings like in Photoshop.

Depending on what kind of look you are going for you could organize and set your ZBrush scene in different layers, turn layers on and off and make separate render passes (saving each image version) then composite your rendered images in Photoshop.
