Hi everyone! :)

I'm new to max 6 and modeling in general (as well as new to this forum).

I see so many great "heads" modeled here that I wanted to give it a try.

I'm following this tutorial:
http://www.secondreality.ch/tutorials/modelling/head.html

But I'm getting lost rather early in the tutorial...

Step 3:

To delete half of the sphere don't I have to convert to editable poly? They don't mention that but the only way I could see to do this was to convert to editable poly - go to the vertex level - select the vertex (s) on half of the sphere and delete - is that right? Then use the "mirror" tool to create an instance. That seemed to work - I'm just confused as to whether I should be working on an editable poly at this point.

Step 4:

I don't understand how to create the edgeloops. I've been struggling with this - searching google for info on edge loops, etc... I just don't get that. :/

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Hello and welcome :wavey:

Well my first instinct is to say 'slow down...'

I understand that everyone wants to make a head straight away, but if you've not gotten to grips with some of the basics of Max, it's best to start off with something a little easier and work your way up. I would strongly suggest working through some of the tutorials in the manual/help file if you haven't done so already. If you have done so, I'll shut up.

Right, that out of the way:

Yes, you should convert to an editable poly. Then select one half of the faces of the sphere and delete. It says mirror/instance, but since this tutorial was written Max now has a symmetry modifier, this will mirror your model (so you only have to work on one side) and also weld the two halves together.

As for Edgeloops, Wiro has written at the top of the tutorial you're following:

Knowledge about the following is expected:

- Subdivision surfaces
- Edgeloop and Edgerings
- Quad polygons

You can learn more about this from here:

Subdivision techniques by Bay Raitt and Greg Minter
Tamas Vagra's subdivision pages
Spiraloid forums

I think that's a good place for you to start before you get too bogged down.

I hope that's been of some help to you. :)

Hi NewMaxer,

I, too, am trying to learn to model heads in Max...and I saw that same tutorial. I didn't have the experience to follow it either. ;)

I did, however, find another (easier, more detailed) tho that may help you.

http://www.comet-cartoons.com/toons/3ddocs/headpolymodel/

And I know that AJ_23 advice is sound as well. I "try" to do a tutorial a day hoping to improve.
