View Full Version : golf ball bump array texture
niner911 06-13-2004, 02:06 AM i cannot seem to make the bump array texture evenly so it appears to be a golf ball. after reading byl's texture book on bump array, i thought i could make a good looking golf ball, but this seems to be a challenge for a newbie. can anyone please comment?

try this, i know it's not procedural. map this image onto your golfball sphere:

good luck & have fun.

you could just make a golf ball....
1. Create > Ball (Shift-o): Tessallation > Segments = 6
2. Multiply > Subdivide (Shift-d) > Metaform
3. Multiply > Subdivide (Shift-d) > Metaform
4. Statistics (w): >4
5. View > Expand (})
6. Modify > Size (Shift-h): Size down a little.
7. View > Contract ({)
8. Modify > Size (Shift-h): Size down a little.
9. Turn on Sub-patch mode Tab
10. Apply surface

Here a quick one cooked up in Maya with Mental Ray.
Thanks for the tute, but id prefer to do it with texture maps like one I just posted, however I want to know how the texture map was made so I can refine the dimples.
Does anyone have any idea how the texture was made that was posted earlier?
Cheers
I just made a golfball...same method gruv pointed out...turned out pretty good:)

Does anyone have any idea how the texture was made that was posted earlier?I would build a real golf ball, then create a spherical UV, and bake the texture.

how do you mean bake the texture? You mean create a displacement map?
If i dont have a texture applied to the ball in the first place, how can i bake anything out? (in Maya that is)

I assumed since this is a Lightwave forum, that you were using Lightwave, not Maya. In Lightwave you can bake out diffuse lighting and shadow, so an applied texture is not strictly required.
Maya must be able to do this. I'm not a Maya expert however.

To get a bump map for a smooth object like a golf ball; after centering, I created a spherical UV, then I put the object in the scene and added a luminous sphere as a radiosity surface, set the light to 0% in Global Light intensity setting, and activated radiosity, opened the surface, ent into the shader panel, clicked on surface baker, and then double-clicked on "surface baker" to bring up the menu, where I selected Bake Illumination, and checked the image saving path with "browse," and then rendered (f9). It worked!
Isn't there a program/plug-in for making "normal maps" that does this too? That would make a fair search.
This thread also seems to give a fair idea of what to expect if one is trying to create spherical maps. There seem to be a lot of questions about "How to make an object into a sphere." Not that I'm knocking the Manual 31.70

Do You mind if I use the bump map texture for a compitition project I am doing for school? I go to the Art Institute of Pheonix.
