First, I'd like to say hello to everyone. Well, my objectives here are to discuss (and show) some modeling techniques, but not ANY technique.... I'd like to focus on non-organic models such as industrial objects, robots and any other "geometric-shape" models.
Here's the first shot: I was surfing at the newtek forum and I saw a wonderful robot made by a guy called "Paq" (from www.paqwak.net) ... I was wondering how he made all that rouded geometry... I asked himself so, when he answer me I'll post his technique here...

that is not hard to do. You can use the edge bevel tool or rounder if you have LW8. there are also plenty of edge rounding plugins available on flay for lw 7.
The lighting is the geometry scaled with segment scale then adding a transparent procedural that uses the marble texture i think.
I am not sure what tutorials are around for machinery but the best place to check is www.lwg3d.org. Lewis did a car modeling forum thread that is really great. You can also find other tutorials on their forums. Alot of vehicle tuts there.
Preset central also has tuts. Do a search for that name in the lightwave resources forum (link should be at top of this forum.) make sure to set view to show anything older than a year, the links where added ages ago.
Thta should get you started.

hey you have a link to the post you are referring to? I would love to follow that topic. I really want to do mechanical stuff, mechs and robotic arm.......I have been looking for ages for a tutorial on this,.

hi guys,
I forgot to say that my goial is to explore the techniques behind that kind of object... but I forgot to say that is better without plugins (at least payed plugins), I use a lscript called "edge tool" but it's not a good tool to make rouded edge geometry, most of the time I use it to make wrinkles in organic objects, since there's not much simetrycal control over this tool...
Rounder is a great plugin, but unfortunatelly it's not a free plugin...

and Here's my 2 cents about his technique: I think he uses a mix of box modeling and subweight modeling to get those round edges... well, at least, I hope so :) I have tried to do that in modeler but without any good result :( the edges appears to be with some kind of ugly geometry...

I think the plugin_is included in lw8 now. You just have select points from edge you want to increase, and then bevel them. There is a lot
of polygons to clean aferward to keep the model as subpatch friendly as possible.

Forget the weight subpatch, because the way it's working (points weight) you don't_have enough control. In fact the perfect tool to do it
is in cinema4d, where you can increase weight on edge, and not only on points (it's a big lightwave limitation in fact)._

Oh I forgot to say... the page that Paq have mentioned, does not have the plugin for download anymore... there's anyone else who owns it? It seems that this plugins is inside LW8, but since I work with LW 7.5c I'll really apreciate if somebody could send me this plugin... rodrigo@design-o-rama.com.br

welll......... i have GOOD and BAD news....
good news: Pascal is a very nice guy and he send me that plugin! Perfect.... If anyone wants it just tell me and I'll send it by email.
badnews: That tool ONLY WORKS ON INTEL-BASED COMPUTERS! And I have use LW for MAC! BUAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH :cry: :cry: :cry:
Is there a good "MAC" soul in this forum who owns LW8 for mac to send me the "edgebevelp.p" file? Is it against the rules? If so, just forget and sorry about that...

I am not following what you are trying to accomplish. Will there be a tutorial coming out of all this? I really would like to see a tut. But in english. I think he is doing one in french.

well, the whole idea is just to discuss different aproaches on modeling non-organic objects, like industrial objects and stuff (see newtek's gallery - section "industrial design")... Pascal's Robot it's just a good example I found in newtek forum...
Now, making a tutorial... it's a different story, but if I realize a good approach to model that kind of object, I can write a tutorial with the "lessons learned" on this discussion... :)
I know it's little difficult to put my ideias here because I don't speak/write english very well.... but I'll do my best to help me and help you and anyone who wants to learn something about modeling...
btw: Tutorials are a great thing, but I don't think we depends to it to learn new stuff... sometimes, a tutorial shows only ONE approach, and we all know that there's many different techniques to do things! :)

cool, thanks for the reply. I will follow this thread and your summary. BUt a tut would be cool for me...:) I kinda give me the foundation then I just go off onmy own from there. ANd I love robots and mechs and stuff. I draw em all the time. Just making them 3d is hard for me.
I appreciate you effort in this.
