thanks Roberto for posting this one a few hours earlier, this way I had a change to participate without rushing!
This is 1H work, PS.
it's a bit messy.. But I got a little tired of it so this will be it.
06-11-2004, 02:20 PM
Decided to finally try the paints out.
06-11-2004, 03:05 PM
heres mine: good old pencil and paper-about 30mins,no time for colour
sorry the quality aint that good,i have trouble with digital cameras.
nice one Garma i like the colours
06-11-2004, 03:20 PM
Hehee Clanger I like yours... I doubt it's supposed to, but the robot makes me laugh : ).
Here's mine. About 1:30 total. Done in PS, with a few scribbles for ideas done on paper.
A monument in remembrance of a past reign of robots over humans...
06-11-2004, 03:40 PM
Andyman, I got chills looking at yours.
Reminds me of Shelley's poem "Ozymandius". A statue in the desert is inscribed with the words, "My name is Ozymandius, King of Kings, Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!", but his entire empire is in ruins and the statue itself is broken.
06-11-2004, 04:03 PM
great ideas guys!! It a bit late for me to start drawing so it will have to wait till tomorrow. *excited*
Clanger, really like your work dude. nice blur effect, don't see much of that in digital painting I think.
Garma, great peice although it is a little messy. nice mood to it.
Andyman, I think there's lot more to this image. makes me think. :buttrock:
06-11-2004, 04:47 PM
Too bad I didn't have time to do the last two threads (evil twin would have been nice).
Anyway, here is a quick photoshop/mouse/20min sketch

06-11-2004, 05:12 PM
thanks guys, really appreciate your comments
I realised it was messy but now that I see it on another computer I also see it is way to light, so I darkened it somewhat, it looks better now. still messy but the background isn't interfering so much anymore.
06-11-2004, 05:13 PM
J-Grieve thats one's really funny!
06-11-2004, 05:55 PM
Thanks Supervlieg :)
been mucking about with oils and a little too much blender..
'Maybe we can get along...'

Hi, here is another sketch of mine, since most of you are pros here, I would appriciate if you gave me suggestions on what I should improve on etc...
One question to whom it may concern, I'm thinkin of getting a wacom tablet, is it worth buying one, especially if you sketch once in a while as I.
06-11-2004, 06:18 PM
Andyman, that rocks!
06-11-2004, 07:41 PM
This is great Andyman
Here is mine:
~1.30 hours with Painter.
Edit: I've just realised the robot doesn't has a right arm :D
06-11-2004, 08:27 PM
Blargh, making things look like they're on a television screen is hard. This isn't a political statement, though I guess some might see it as such. Mostly I think robots in suits are extra creepy.
1:30 in photoshop w/ WACOM tablet... sucka!
EDIT - Well, I took yer advice Goro and tried to bump up the intensity of the lighting. I actually have to go, so I didn't have a whole lot of time to work on the picture. I have to admit you hit the nail on the head - if there's one thing I would pick out of my work that I really want to improve, it's my sense of lighting. I tend to make everything washed out and flat color wise because I don't want to commit to light and its effects. Thanks for the pointers!

06-11-2004, 09:39 PM
Good work so far guys.
Question: Does this sketch thread end tomorrow at 10, or is THIS the weekend sketch? And if it is the weekend sketch, Im assuming the deadline is Monday at 10, correct?
06-11-2004, 09:47 PM
yeah good question zzacmann...
as stupid as this sounds, i dont exactly know what a "robot overlord" is... i just thought of someone w/ power...
so here be robo-hef. he has the most power over the bunnies! ;D
PS - 1.5hr
06-11-2004, 10:03 PM
Thank you tons, guys : ).
Nice perspective, jeroentje.
06-11-2004, 10:24 PM
1min pencil sketch, had a different idea while doing this one, I'll post that later hopefully.
Clanger - like the crowd, ambiguous if its a cheering or protesting mob :)
Andyman - interesting colours there, like the fist as well
J_Grieve - hehe made me laugh
PaemrI - I like the idea, perhaps a different view inside looking out or something would be cool. Tablet wise I'd say get one if you can aford it, might take a while to get used to it but you have this forum for lots of practice ;)
jeroentje - really nice, like the sense of scale when you see the little guy
Some crits and feedback
Try to add more detail in the face area.
You should darken the face more and you could work
with shadows and highlights a bit more.
I think your sketch would look much better without the blur.
The colors are good! and the robot looks nice too.
keep it up!
Good start. Try to focus more on the proportions and
Nice! You should work on the girl a bit more imo
looks a bit stiff. But anyways nice mood.
Cute little sketch. Like the Idea
Hahaha that's a good one!
The sketch is nice so far. I would suggest to choose more
dynamic perspectives and poses. It's not easy I know. Have
also trouble in doing that but it will make your image much more
interesting. And think about every stroke you draw. It's really
important if you draw complex poses.
interesting sketch. The highlight of the left arm of your robot is
exelent. nice one!
Try to think about where the light comes from. The television
is your only light source in your image. You could use more saturated
colors for the TV screen and more darker cold colors for the
rest of your scene. Then you should add bright highlights at the edges of the
fist and the can etc.
You chose a really difficult lighting.
Nice as usual Jerontje! Love the hard brush strokes!
Is he a robot?
He seems really satisfied!
Love your sketch. waiting for more!
Here is mine for today!
About 3hours Photoshop
06-11-2004, 10:56 PM
awesome goro:applause: :buttrock: :applause:

Ball Point Pen / 25 min
There are some nice ones today. I love this sketch group. Just what I need to keep the creative juices flowing.
06-12-2004, 12:19 AM
i have a dexxa tablet now.. used and not presure sensitive.. but it will do for now..
around 7-8min, photoshop...
goro, i love the expression on ur bots face lol.. its like "look at the pretty ants..."
06-12-2004, 12:20 AM
not sure where the pan and hat came from, maybe I'm hungrey  Paper, pencel, paint shop pro 4 (to scan and clean up) about 20 min ( mostly spent on the lady). http://www.pix8.net/files/robotoverlord1.jpg
06-12-2004, 12:32 AM
I spent way too much time on this one. About..erm..4 hours. And then I gotta downsize it to 640 -_- :D
Anyway, here it goes. Don't ask me why they need oarsmen on that spaceship :P
Nice sense of scale goro. Good job - I don't like it as much as your other pics though. It looks a little flat.
stephan that's really impressive!!
I still have to learn a lot from you!
06-12-2004, 12:43 AM
Thanks, and look! There's even a girl in there :D
06-12-2004, 12:46 AM
Some really nice sketches here :)
Here's my meager contribution. I kinda got carried away as you can see heh...The scanner kinda made it a bit brighter, the original is much darker and it has much more detail.
Done in 20 min with pencil on brown recycled paper.
06-12-2004, 12:49 AM
lol sula thats exactly the same concept i came up with,
06-12-2004, 12:50 AM
CRAP!!!.... red the topic wrong
i thought it said Robot OverLoads! GRRR!!!
i got like 45 mins into it, and checked the forum 2 see if anyone was taking my exploding robot idea, re read the topic slower then start hitting desk and bouncing in my comp chair like a angry baby that didnt get the food it wanted
well this is what i have done and probly goin 2 stop it now !!
mybe about an hour wacom+photoshop
would have got it in around 1 pm but had major host problems
06-12-2004, 01:00 AM
FANTASTIC!! so many great ideas !
goro, mate you the man, seriously !
iamintricate, great idea! the chicks bit ugly though ;) Oh and I also don't really know what overlord means...
mustard, that's beautiful mate, I haven't used ball point in a while, good job!!
stephan, awsome and sick lighting
jeroentje, nice perspective and supa red and blue lighting..
PS just a bit over an hour...This one was really hard coz I haven't drawn a robot in......well since I was very little. And I just painted this time which I am crap at...heheh It looks more like an alien though...
06-12-2004, 01:15 AM
*Yawn*.. after spending all day and night yesterday no kidding form 9am thursday to 11 am Friday at school finishing all my art projects for my finals I didnt think I would want to draw again, but Id hate to miss one now,
Its just a 5 minute sketch, I didnt even bother to earse mistakes this time cause I am very tired, goodnight.
5 minutes, pencil paper Robot overloads.
First I post then I look at peoples work.
Andyman- scary! I like the mood.
J-Grieve- that is funny
Goro- you never cease to impress me. i love all your stuff.
StephanS.-This one is my favorite, I really like it.... lol, I have no idea either why they would need oarsmen on a spaceship, but I guess they can never be to cautious.
Fine 2257- :) As you can see from my sketch I read it wrong too so you are not alone, I could fix it, but I refuse to pick up a pencil for at least the whole weekend :surprised
06-12-2004, 01:27 AM
haha, alteast i wasnt the only one =D
when i read it this morning i was so possitive it said overload  good times
06-12-2004, 01:36 AM
I hate to keep bringing this up, but does anyone know whether this is the weekend sketch or not? I can loose half a nights sleep working on this tonight or if the deadline isn't until Monday, I can spend all day tomorrow working on it and get a full nights sleep tonight.
Come on people. Work with me here. As one sleep deprived artist to another.
06-12-2004, 01:57 AM
Ah hell, I decided to throw the hat in the ring.
PSP 3 hours
And relax guys, my entry is NOT in competition.
PS There will be entries this weekend. Sorry for the lack of sleep.
06-12-2004, 05:12 AM
Okay, Im starting to get a little burned out here. I dont have to the time or the energy to color and complete this piece so Ill just post the sketch itself. Hey, this IS a sketch forum. I didn't imagine I'd be spending hours upon hours working on these "sketches" when I was so gun-ho about it last week. Honestly, the work here is getting more and more like the kind of stuff you'd see in the Finished 2D Gallery and less and less like sketches. Im not complaining. The work here so far has been fantastic and I hope you guys keep it up. But I can't keep putting the time (hours and hours) into these things like I have. Sorry for the rant. Heres my sketch.
I was going for a giant robot head that is hooked up to an automated factory that rips out human's brains. The robot grows stronger with the more brains it has, so the machines around it are dropping the human brains into its head. 1 hour.
06-12-2004, 05:31 AM
Great to see new faces here. Here's mine, then to bed!
WARNING: DO NOT, under any circumstances, make fun of your robot overlord. He has:
1. No sense of humor, and
2. Death rays that shoot from his eyes.
You have been warned.
About 3 hrs in photoshop
06-12-2004, 05:38 AM
Awsome work guys, as usual! I especially liked Goro, stephan.s and bumskee
Goro and Kieronh, thank you for taking your time mates, I will take your advice and hopefully make some improvements for the next time.
06-12-2004, 05:54 AM
why must they supress us just because they are our overlords? Cant they set us up on dates instead?
06-12-2004, 06:53 AM
i'm reading The Long Ships at the moment so had the same idea as StephanS (great work BTW)...anyway something similar...
painter / 1hr30
06-12-2004, 07:21 AM
In the year 2082, an advanced robotic killing machine was sent back in time by Skynet to infiltrate the governments of the early 21st century... upon successful election, the Terminader shed it's artificial skin, activated the Skynet program, and declared itself Supreme Overlord of Earth. The battle was short, and humanity was destroyed...
Yeah... anyway, about 3 hours in Painter 8. :p
06-12-2004, 09:46 AM
Damn, just had no time to spend on this one :hmm: 2min sketch, 30mins Photoshop/Wacom. Had a 3rd one in the works maybe I'll post that with some feedback later today. Nice work from everyone.
06-12-2004, 11:50 AM

Some fantastic entries! I especially like Telemaco's.
Here's my scribble
Photoshop, wacom, 20 mins
06-12-2004, 03:43 PM
cute one telemaco! i like your style
06-12-2004, 03:46 PM
Looks like we started serious and ended funny.
PaemerI -- I like your picture and it's a cool concept. If you zoomed in more I'd like to see if the human was trying to escape or jumping for the food his robot overlord was giving him.
Clanger -- LOVE the lighting on the crowd. The blur on the robot makes me reach for my eyeglasses, though.
Flatuoso -- When I drive by houses at night, there's a bright blue glow in every window that has a tv on. A nice light blue hilight might be just what you're looking for.
bumskee -- "Step forward and be judged". Don't know if you intended it, but it looks like a trial. Nice.
buzzz3d -- I like pic as well as the new avatar. HA HA cracked me up, and I love the "be just as afraid of little robots" idea that you and AJ keyed into.
Supervlieg -- Humans are mere playthings of the bots. I like the bot in the right background frying humans with laser vision like a kid burns ants with a magnifier.
Archeophant -- You think like a writer. Sounds like a riff on Anne Frank's Diary. Awesome.
Telemaco -- It's good to know that robots only want to oppress other robots. Very nice.
BTW, I was stumped when I first read the topic and thought of doing a "My robot's overboard!" piece. Maybe someday.
06-12-2004, 04:04 PM
Very Nice entries here.
AJ_23: Very Funny. I love it!
Supervlieg: Liked your composition and framing of the scene
Telemaco: liked the your drawing style, very distinct.
Ilikesoup: Hilarious. Loved the Captions.
Great work everyone who posted. Hopefully I can post one up for the next topic . I need more time...sigh.
Have a nice weekend everyone!
06-12-2004, 04:41 PM
Garma: Like the colors.
Clanger: Cool idea and setting. Background may be a little too blurry.
matty_UK: Good design although I missing the link with humans
Andyman:Yeah, that it. Good colors. Personally I would have made the hand a little higher because now it is in line eith the edge the person is sitting on.
Cyro: Like the tentacles
Rio Yeti: That's funny.
J_Grieve: Great idea (dog) and big robot!
PaemrI: Very good sketch. About the wacom, if you intend to do painting I would say yes, it's worth it, but for sketching i still prefer pencils.

Flatuloso: Good work
jeroentje: Love the contrast
iamintricate: Thats bunny, I mean funny :)
Kieronh: Sketch looks promising
