View Full Version : rigging a car
izard 07-21-2002, 10:18 PM Hi, i'm currently creating a buggy for a short but i was wondering.
What is the best way to rig it regarding to physics/suspension/etc.. because i don't have any experience regarding rigging a vehicle properly..
I want the wheels to collide to the floor (active rigid body's i guess..) and bounce up with bumps n'stuff.
But i also want the main car to react to the wheels.
:surprised:
Does anyone have any experience regarding this?
I guess it's a big rig, but any directions or thoughts would be appreciated..

Thanks, that's a big help
But your rig doesn't deal with the physics..
Example: my car drives over some sort of bump.
I want the suspension to absorb the bump, but the car should bounce up itself because of this, fly a bit, land on its wheels and bounce some more..
All without keyframing, just through physics..
any thoughts on how i could create such behaviour?

Is it me, or are people getting lazier?

Lazy doesn't really have anything to do with it. One car may not be a big deal, but imagine 50 cars in one shot. Wouldn't it be great to draw a path for the cars and only have to key their acceleration and let physics do the rest?
If you find a good tutorial on setting up this type of rig (and one was already mentioned, but I haven't checked it out yet), be sure and post a link.
I just checked the tutorial and it looks like it's just what the doctor ordered.

jRocket: Actually it has nothing to do with lazyness, but with realism. You can never get the sort of realism with keyframing by hand as compared to physically correct physics. The eye of the human easily spots unexpected physical behaviour, so it's better to do it not by hand, but with some plugin/calculations. Assuming it is not just for a car accelerating, driving on a straight line, and stopping again or so, but when some good amount of physics would be involved.
