View Full Version : re: How do you model an old mac mouse?
storm 07-21-2002, 09:12 PM Hi, I am a newbie with cinema 3D, just wondering how you can model a simple object such as an old styled mac mouse? I modeled the base using extrude nurb to a spline, but for the top, since it is kind of round, I just dont have a clue how I supposed to do that. Please help, thanks.

dpends on how old, my knowledge of macs isn't as good as it probably should be, is this like the ones on the APPLE IIe???
I would do this in hypernurbs, start with a cube and hit c now go into poly mode, elect two sides of the cube, and extrude them . now make one side longer than the other this will be the front of the mouse where the button will be. scale the whole object down a bit on the y axis to flatten it out a bit, now pull the back points down a bit more and the front points more than the back points. noe select all the sides and the top, and right click and select smooth shift, th default setting is at five m, I would set it to about 2.5, and the degrees around 1 - 5, and apply now place this in a hypernurbs object and you basic shape is done, select the main poly on the top front, and extrude ineer a bit then extrude won and innner a bit more, then extrude up to create the button.
Hope that helps, I am way to kind today. Hope that Helps, and if you have any questions, hopefully someone can help you as I won't be around most the day :(

What kind of mouse? the old box ones or the old cream rounded ones?
I would attack the two in 2 different ways...
I may have some old ones at work... will have a look

thanks for your reply. That was actually my first experiment using cinema.
I did it with hyper nurbs as you assisted me to. It was great. Then it turns me to a second question... hehe.
How do you combine splines in a way that you can use it with loft nurbs?
I mean, say, I want a circle with a square hole as one single spline, then loft it so that it will be a celinder having a square hole at the center.
I know that I can create outline if all I want is 2 of the same shapes.
I tried grouping 2 splines and also tried boolean(a-B) but both dont work with nurbs.
I could have done this fairly quick if I just use illustrator and then import the shaps to cinema. But I think there should be a better way to do it.
please help, thanks

by the way, mac is simply a cadalic(however you supposed to spell it)
wont make it faster, just look and feel better using it. I am more into speed and cost efficiency. So, my choice would be using a souped up pc than spending a few gs on a nice plastic/titanium case.
Storm,
I don't know that you can do that with NURBS in Cinema4D.
But you can do it with booleans and primitives.
Simply use a cylinder primitive with a boolean difference and a cube.

Thanks for your info. Actually my objective is far more than that. If you are not using an optical mouse, just turn it over and look at that lid where it holds the mouse ball. The lid is what I am trying to illustrate. But I am already stuck from the top most onion skin. How can I do that top layer straight using cinema? I am thinking of using a loft nurb.
If I create the circles using illustrator, I think I can probably make it work. Also, I can create outline off the circle spline and it should work as well. But, what if, that inner circle is not a circle? My guess is, I could have create a thin celinder, seperate the inside polygon, and use it as part of the loft nurb?
My whole point is, if there is a way to combine 2 splines to 1, that can simplify a lot of trouble. But I am not sure if my hypothesis will work.. :P Please help, thanks.
