Been reading all the reviews and opinions on laptops for 3D work and i found alot of interesting thought on components and what they mean to different 3D packages.

i am mostly using max but alot of what i read was for maya, so could you please advise me if these specs would be ok for max?
-----------------------------------------------------
ACER 1501LCe Athlon 64

AMD Athlon 3000+ processor
1MB Level 2 cache
512MB DDR
40GB hard drive
CD-RW/DVD combo drive
No floppy drive Optional external drive available
15" TFT display
64MB ATI Radeon 9600
Internal 56k modem
Wired LAN 10/100/1000
Li-ion battery
---------------------------------------------------
i'm not intent on using the battery as with most people with laptops for 3D. is Radeon ok for max, i generally use Nvidia but read alot of good things about the ATI9600!

also i read alot of hate for VIA and this was in this laptops spec (VIA Apollo K8T800) is this a bad thing?

any advice would be great.

thanks all

If you are buying a laptop nowadays you really should get one with built in WiFi and also ATI is not that great with Max. Did you look at Boxx? They are making laptops now...well more like "portable" workstations...not that great for traveling alot, they are big and heavy.

i can't find much decent here in the UK. i was looking at Boxx and Emachines but i couldn't find many suppliers and little competition. i'm unsure what Wifi is? is ATI really bad with max, i'm not using this much for rendering, mainly modelling. low poly game characetrs and texture work. it's basically so i can leave the house when i work.

Thanks

WiFi is wireless.

you should look for some benchmark test for max on the ATI website. and rendering really doesn't use much of the graphics card it is more RAM and CPU...your graphics card is a direct function of the stability, control, look, performance of the max interface so if "all your doing is modeling" then you really do want a good graphics card above everything else.

Comparing Boxx to emachines is a strange thing to do. Thats like looking for the difference between a calf and a bull.

Thanks for the great reply, i'm afraid i'm on a tight budget and after speaking with some friends the one thing most recommended not to worry about was the car, i was told the CPU and the Ram were most important for throwing polys around. that why i was looking at an athlon 62 and 512 ram (i'll probably upgrade to a gig!) but the card as u say is pretty important.

i didn't mean to offend about Boxx and emachines, my knowledge of each is limited only that boxx is expensive but tough looking and emachines are a bit more comfortable to afford, still though neither are really available here so i'm shagged as far as that is concerned.

so do u have a laptop that you would recommend. alot of people mention Dell P60 or the 1150. (i think thats the names)

Thanks

found this

Intel P4 3.06GHz with HT

512Mb DDR RAM

60Gb Hard Drive

DVD Rewriter Drive

15" Screen

64Mb nVidia GeForce FX Go5300 Graphics

Wireless Enabled

MS Works 7.0 Software

WIN XP Home Edition

1 Year FREE Warranty

but it's nearly £200 more, will a Nvidia really make that much difference over a ATI for max?

Actually, if you use MaxExtreme which is written for Nvidia cards it is noticeably better. Iam not sure if your 52002go will be supported by Extreme though. I think it's written for Quadros like the Quadro FX 2 go.

dont be scared of the price. its in canadian.
this is what i got. and it works very very well.

http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=en&section=1&group=1&product=2391

specs
http://www.toshiba.ca/web/specifications.grp?lg=en&section=1&group=1&product=2391&part=1991

its one of the few that comes with a geforce gofx 5600

i usually take work files home and work on stuff between my dual xeon machine at work and on this laptop. cant say that theres a HUGE difference for the most part, especially not for modelling. its until you reach those BIG files that you start to see a difference but overall its great. in zbrush there seems to be a bigger difference but thats mainly due to the more ram on the xeons we got.

anyway. all this one needs is about 2x ram than its got by default and theres not much to complain about.

motoexpress, i'll check that info for the card before i buy! thanks

Leonec, AW has the exact one. it's a toshiba

TOSHIBA P10 804 (http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=1369&CategoryID=11&SubCategoryID=)

best price i found was just under a £grand (the price you showed was about £1200UKP AW, but i'm still struggling to justify £200 between this and the Acer i first mentioned.

can someone please loan/give me £200 or help justify it?

RE: Just been told that it's a refurb price at £1000UKP, must have been too greedy as everywhere else is looking at about £1400 in the UK

Thanks
