can anyone tell me how you create an image/render of the mesh overlaid on the smoothed render. i notice that everyone seems to be able to do except me. kinda like the middle shot in my previous image. can it be done within max or is the only way to take a screen shot and edit it in photshop

Finally finished! As far as putting a wireframe (?) over your model, the easiest way with Max is to render a shaded, and wire from the same posisiton. Take it to Photoshop, and overlay the wire. Make sure you render to a 32 bit file, so you can selct the alpha. Makes work so much easier. I suggest 32-bit tga's.
EDIT - Yeah, I JUST noticed that you already did that.
