View Full Version : quadro fx 500 = craptastic!
TheIvIaxx 06-07-2004, 08:06 PM Anyone in the market for a good workstation card, DO NOT BUY AN FX 500. this is the biggest piece of dog **** i have ever owned. I regret ever getting, i guess it serves me right for being a cheap bastard :) . anyhow, i have dual monitor and this thing lags ass on pretty much everything. I play world of warcraft and it will run at arouns 3 fps with both monitors lit up, turn one off and you get some decent performance. but this card is based on the fx 5200 chipset i believe, which makes it inherently crap. dont be cheap guys, but the fx 1000 or go back to the Q4 980, steer clear of the fx 500.
you have been warned

very informative.
its good to see that you have also detailed your very lengthly troubleshooting process to get to this point.
NOTE: quadro FX 500 is a workstation card designed for 3D applications.
also it can't be based on the FX 5200 as it wasn't even out when the 500 was released.
try using paragraphs in your future posts.
3FPS? what are you using to monitor this?
i think its impossible to achieve that. why do you need a dual monitor setup to play a game?
what monitors do u have?
what resolution were u running the games at?
GTA VC laggs for me when reading off the cd sometimes.
did you buy the game retail?
do u have things like AA enabled?

Yeah, the FX500 isn't exactly a blazing fast card, but 3fps...ouch! Try using horizontal span rather than dualview if u haven't already and u probably want to turn the settings from quality towards blend or whatever your game uses. Heck perhaps just making a hotkey for a single display mode when playing games, although I think there shouldn't be that much of a difference hspan performance.
Good luck and hopefully you'll resolve some issues.

well first of all it may not be blazing fast but its an entry lvl card not made for crazy amounts of pixels in your viewports. second of all it is not made for speed but for quality like other pro cards. so its not made for games.
It does Have the same chip as the 5200 but the 5200 also is a budget card. and for that matter its a pretty good budget video card. I can play Unreal Tournamnet 2003/4 at 1280*1024 with every setting put to maximum.
maybe the reason you are getting lag in World of Warcraft is because of your internet conection or because of a slow processor.

i am monitoring fps with the game command to display fps. I might say lag was doing it, but turning off a monitor solves the problem. the card works great for wings, does pretty good in maya, but lags ass in max for some reason. i mentioned the game because it has the worst performance. i understand what the card was meant for, but this type of performance is sub par. i think an gf3 could out do it. anyhow, i would suggest for the entry level guys, this might be good. but entry level also suggests that they are going to doing other things rather than cg, i.e. gaming. so this card may be more trouble than its worth. Just save up another couple hundred bucks and get a 980xgl. oh, btw what is a pararaph?

yeah, tried all that. the game has problems with this chipset specifically. its still in beta so i am sure it will get better. but overall, my experience with this card has not been a good one. the only thing its good for is wings, then again so is a trident :)

If the game has problems with that particular chipset why does it surprise you that it gets 3fps???!?!?!?!?
That is what boggles me.
