View Full Version : Is External Firewire fast enough for video
videodv 06-07-2004, 02:43 PM I need to get some more storage for video work and was wondering if an external firewire drive is fast enough for video capture.
Thanks

I found no problems, i used Final cut pro on an apple which had an external storage connected with firewire and it was fine

It will depend entirely on the bandwidth of video you are wanting to stream from it.
CD-quality video? No problem.
DVD-quality video? Shouldn't be a problem.
HD quality video? Big problem.
Most of the Firewire drives I've seen are sitting at a piddly 20+ MB/s bandwidth rate (and this is the good ones). If your video is higher bandwidth than this, you'll have problems.
But, if it's "normal" video you shouldn't see much of a problem, if any.
