View Full Version : Zipper animation?
Chillydawg 07-20-2002, 11:26 PM Hey all,
I modelled a zipper and now I want to animate it.
The Wire Tool is great to animate the closing of the 2 sides of the cloth but how do I attach the metal "teeth" that clamps the cloth to it?
I am totally new to Maya so if there are any tuts about this I would very much appreciate to have the links. As well as any other kind of help...
Also, how do I link an object to another one? Or how is this function called in Maya? It must be in there somewhere...
Thanks a bunch

didn't done that so far but here's what comes to my mind as a possible way.
model your clothe and the Zipper. then create one lattice for each side of the zipper with a good division along the zipper. now create a few drag control's along the zipper for the cloth (do this for both sides of the zipper).
now fit the divisions of the lattices to the amount of the dragcontrols. mean that at every position of a drag control is a divsion of the of the lattice of this side.. create a cluster for each division of the lattice (again on each side). parent the cluster to the drag control that lies on his position (you can also try it the other way aorund parent the drag control to the cluster). now you should have control over the zipper and it's only a thing to animate. a way may be to group the corresponding drag controls (if you parented the clusters to the drag controls) that make out one step in the zipper. center the pivot the the goup and now you can scale it out on the one axis.
didn't test it now, so it's just a suggestion. :hmm:

Woa... that sounds very promissing. :hmm: I will absolutely give it a go, as soon as I will have sorted out all the function you are talking about, and how to work with them.
Thanks a bunch and have a nice sunday.

If you already have a wire deformer, simply make it a motion path for each tooth of the zipper. You can "animate" the zipper teeth to the correct position (shifting keys in the Graph Editor), and then "kill" the animation (only leave a single key). Now your teeth will stick to the wire, which will in turn deform the surface. Of course, it could be a little time consuming attaching each tooth to the motion path... you would probably want to batch it with a script.
