This is a design for characters that have robotic enhancements. Trying to make the robotic side reasonably subtle compared to some of my other images where there are mechanical bits all over the place. To view:

It's a nice start, but you should use a reference pic of the human figure if you haven't already. I'd have to do the same to give specifics, but here are a few areas to check. The pectoral muscles shouldn't have a seam at the top and (I think) should flow upwards into the shoulder, which should be rounded. Looks like the pelvis and hips should take up more space, too.

I like the colors you've chosen -- makes the character seem organic, but unnatural at the same time, if that makes sense. I'd like to see this as it takes shape. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. the image was an initial concept, which will lead on to other (and better) designs for a project i'm doin. cheers. I painted this slightly disturbing image last night. Think it's probably my best painting so far, my others are under the normal 2d forum, but i'd appreciate any comments or advice to improve the final work.
i was going for a semi realsitic look, enough really to get a bit of clarity across. Used photoshop and tablet, and getting used to using them. cheers!

here's yet another idea for the mutant environment. this time using a combo of organic and artificial forms. Think i shud use hard strokes next time to achieve a sharper look. any suggestions?

It seems that as far as the painting goes you're making good progress with the shading and blending and such. It seems however like it would be a good idea to pay a little more attention to the facial proportions of your characters, because they feel quite off to me at least. Even if they are mutants and all, it would improve the overall impression and believability if their head and face proportions were more realistic.

Your first drawing in this thread actually reminds me a bit of the Bunnyman in my Machineflesh entry :D

Well, keep going! Check some head and face reference.

cheers, i'm actually doing a character based off reference material right at this moment, while i did the others off the top of my head. i know what you meant. The comments are appreciated!

ive been following your thread for a while

your work is differnetily improving

the one thing that strikes me is your images are quite soft almost blurred
maybe use some harded edged brushes, with a bit more guts and more tonal variation.

keep it up.

cheers, the ledge, your right about the blurryness. thanks for following my thread with such dedication!

the face has a good sense of volume, but I'd like to see a bit more tonal range. Also the mechanics cold be a little more intergrated with the face. keep up the good work.

here's the final after some feedback.i've darkened the shadows and added touches of the the colours on the reflective surfaces, eg added some skin colour on the metal bits, blue from cloth onto the skin etc, also bit of sharpening, plus brought out skin bump from metal bit.

awesome, great juxtaposition, my only crit is that the skin seems extremely sharp where it meets the metal maybe small tears or areas of varying roughness.

These are coming along well Gareth.
I still think there needs to be more integration between the mechanics, and the flesh.
I kow your trying to keep it clean to contrast with the mutants, but these sort of enhancements could be part of the character more than a replaced area.
Maybe you could have some parts under the skin that could still be faintly visable through the skin.
I really think that your style is coming along.

thanks fullas, i'll do sum work on the dude, and post him soon!

billy the kid

here's the next one after sum feedback, mainly to do with intergrating the machine with the flesh a bit more. i also blurred the top left edge of the skin to give it a little more depth, and get rid of the clean look a bit.

Better, I still think it needs more.

Nice touch with the wires under the skin by the way.

07-11-2004, 03:23 AM
here's the next one with the very subtle changes. darkened the edge a bit and made it a bit bumpier. i do want it quite clean, coz these are perfected beings, so the skin edge will be clean to a certain degree. thanks tho!

here's a painting of the city. influenced by feng zhu's work. used photo for base, and worked over the top. think i'm goin to be changing my concept a bit for my project, so i may be a while with my next post, and they're likely to be a bit different.
