I ran into somethign that is confusing me. I did a boolean difference of a box and cylinder, so that i can get a hole in the box. But now if i want to cut the box edges to add more definition i get an error that i can't cut on holes... i tried freezing and everything, but i keep getting that error.

What is the solution? Should i not make holes this way? I don't want the hole to go all the way though, just a little in.

try to subdivide the cube faces before the boolean operation .. should work

But what if you want to add additional detail to it after you boolean it. I mean is it totally final once you boolean it?

you can, but ALWAYS make sure you subdivide o face before boolean

you should be able to select the faces inside the hole of the cube (ie: the ones created from the cylinder shape when u boolean), add a 'smooth' to them and set the 'keep border edges' (i think thats what it is) to 'off'.
this may allow you to smooth and subdivide that hole geometry.

sorry if this is wrong, just thinkin on me feet whilst afx renders!

try moving your geometry a very very slight bit. that often helps with booleans..
and maybe try modelling without booleans :)

When you say subdivide a face before you boolean, do you mean just splitting it into 4 faces? How does that help with no being able to edit after the boolean?

The problem isn't not being able to edit (IE: cut new faces) the hole itself, but the entire object.
I know that people don't like using booleans, but that is also why i asked how else would you suggest i do it?

I'm trying to cut cylinder holes, that don't go all the way through the mesh. Similar to how you see the small holes on the front of your pc cases.

i think is better for u to actually model the holes instead of using boleans, i dunno boleans always get messy

yes, that`s it :)

i think it`s a small bug

You were right, i guess it is a bug. It booleaned ok now after i sub-divided it. I wouldn't consider that 'small' though :)

its just that faces w holes in them (ie, a face which have an 'interior boundary') are a bit ...funny (guess its nice to have the option of holed faces ...but who uses them? and under what situations?). So to combat the case where a boolean operation produces holed faces, split faces of large expanse w/i the intersectn region/s to prevent their formation (just dont have a face that recieves a closed interior intersectn). or select the offending face and tess-quad it to get ...un-holy faces, which are split happy and re-arrange the topology as you please from there. perhaps you might prefer to introduce geometry around the intersectn by deleting the face and then using the b.games 'merge borders' to bridge the gap, producing perhaps more agreeable geom to work with. if your just detailing the interior border, subdivide the adjoining faces as suggested above. anyone explicitly know why you cant split a faces w holes?
