It should Work with a bend material, one with wireframe and the other without. I tried it but did'nt work. Check the .max if you find the bug

Hey..
Try using a Top/Bottom material.. one with the wire, one shaded..
that worked for me..
or u could try using a mix material too.. ;)

ribok7:
I knew exactly how to do it the way your tutorial does.
but i need to know how to apply the right material into the object and render it in Max and have that effect.
no photoshop, again, no reason, just want to learn how to do it in Max alone.
solomon:
yes, similar to your image, but the shading part shouldn't have wires and thw wireframe part shouldn't have shading, and the middle should have a liitle of both.

Clone the object, apply a push modifier on a really low setting to the clone, and give it a wire material.

with MAX's default shaders, you need 2 same object with
transparent map channel (for masking)...no other way i think.
You can do this with one object, the Blend material and a free material plugin called "Edge Map" from http://www.snotmonster.com/
Here is an example.

I will also attatch the max file for you to play with if you want.

Edgemap is the winner, I think. I always used to do it with clone and push, but edgemap really reduces the amount of work. Thanks for the tip. You got to put color into self-illumination to get colored wires. And you may need supersampling like they mention, which slows the rendering down.
Actually, I looked at your file, you use Mask with RGB tint map instead of self-illumination, with inverted edgemap for a mask. Either one works.
