Its never late isn't it. My first challenge :) I dont know where I'm going
with this, it doesent even had a defined head, but basicly I want him to be
extremly strong and muscular, like he was MADE for pulling a huge weight.
The sketch is photoshop painting for outlining the basic forms and
muscles, other than that I really like a freedom of adding and changing
things when modelling, if it's not like that I would fell like executing some
procedure with no creativity at all.
This is a great challenge and I think there are so many entrys because
the theme is inspiring. I dont know if I'll have time to finish this one
but I'll give my best.

Hey mandrake, welcome to the challenge. Looking at that sketch it looks like you have a good sense of muscle structure and form. I'll be looking foreward to seeing some of your 3D work on this.

YEsss...

Thanks guys! I'll post new pic latter.. stay tuned.

TheSEL Thank you. Iwas trying pulling the head but
this way it looks stronger and more compact. I'll
put some thing around his neck though to make the
head more distinct.

phil - ha ha yes after this I could make some steroids.mll
or steroids.p for Lw guys

the_real_cabal - thank you man

zeb - I'm thinking to put him into some pose
when I finish modeling , also when pulling some
huge weight it shouldn't look wrong. will see
;) thanks for comment

see you later..

Looking awesome there! I'd agree that some bone stretching the skin would be a good contratst with all the muscle, maybe some kind of forehead or somthing, to strethen the design of the head, the strong neck looks great though :)

So does he have massive calluses or feet ;)

Personally I like the second one best. If you go with the last one that you've chosen, maybe you should make her arching her back more, like she's really struggling to harness this incredible beast that she's riding?!

Mandrake
07-29-2002, 07:39 PM
Rhid1en yes the second one was my favourite but somehow
I got a feeling that she'll look like on a touristic sightseeing,
and it would not fit the heavy burden part of story. Thanks
for a comment!

tubby
07-29-2002, 07:44 PM
wow. your amazing!!.i like the pose you decided on out of the others, maybe have the beasts head turned as if reacting to the harness. other than that just the missing feet that im sure your aware of. kick a$$ model and i cant wait to see it done!!

Rhid1en
07-31-2002, 06:36 PM
Damn man, really incredible! Did you use displacement maps for the detail? The only thing I can think to critique for you right now is the woman. I really like the exagerated proportions and think they fit the fantasy art style well, however I feel her rib cage is a little to thick between her back and front of chest. Maybe if you just scale it in slightly it would unify her body proportions a little better? I'd also like to see some hair flowing out from under her helmet and blowing in the wind a little to just further excentuate the feeling of movement and power to the piece!
Also, even if his feet are sinking in the sand/mud/water, I'd kind of like to see them in a swamp with lilly pads, hehe... anyway, I think you should be able to see at least parts of some of the feet.
I really can't wait to see how the final image comes together!

ZrO-1
07-31-2002, 07:41 PM
Hey mandrake, very nice workmanship on that woman. I do have a couple crits about her proportions though ;). It looks like her waist is much too thin. The rest of her body looks very muscular, but her waist is pencil-thin I think you need to bulk-up and widen (side-to-side) her waist to make it fit with the rest of her body. The other thing that looked off (though this could have just been the camera angle) is her lats (the muscles running down the sides of her rib-cage from the armpits to her waist) They seem overly large and thick in comparison to her upper arms and thighs. I would suggest making them a bit thinner (front-to-back) and not attached out on the arm so far.

Just my 2 cents, alot of that is entirely personal preference stuff, not really based wholely on human anatomy.

hey dude,
u did frank proud mannn.
i wont comment on the chick since the beast is the main dude here(or so i think).
the arms seam to ram rod straight to me, almost as if he knows some one is looking ;).also a beast would primarily have most of his strenght in it's hind(power comes from the lower back muscles and legs) for pulling heavy loads(and spilling them when chicks sit on it/him...ahaahhahaha).
questions:
1)whats the poly count like(cage and final)
2)poly tools ??? default or mj
4)are you going to pump him him up further with displacements.
5)will you be doing a making of or something a little more elucidating(refrnces, inspirations, tips, tricks, pifalls etc...)

as far a this dude is concened...i wouldn't want be on his wrong side.

I really appreciate all of your comments. Thank you guys
so much!
HapZungLam - I started about 10 days ago. The problem
is, I have a full time job, so I could only work on this on the
weekends and some looong nights :)
neilyb - I'm working on this
Rhid1en - Thanks man. No disp maps everything is
modelled, you're probably right about the ribcage,
the hair wil come someday but for this challenge hair
plugins are not allowed and I'm not crazy about modeling
it by hand :)
ZrO-1 - man you're great, you should be mod here your
endurance is amazing ( and your beast is bigger even
than your thread , which is huuuge) You might be right
about the girl but this is fantasy world so I'm allowed to
be some more relaxing when it comes to "correct"
anatomy or similar.
Marc - thank you a milion!
Thanks boomji - I dont know the poly count in Maya since
it's subd mostly but I couldnt even think to render it in
Maya with 512 mb ram, so I tesselated everything and
put two million polys in cinema4d for rendering. Im using
mj a lot in early stage for edge splliting. I was thinking
about using additional disp maps will see for that and
for tuts..

Oh my god! The amount of detail is almost depressing! I don't even dare to think of modeling these veins or mega-pumped muscles, its insane...

Really incredible work! The concept might not be the most original in this challenge, but the modeling has to be pretty much the most impressive I've seen here yet, and that's saying a lot looking at the number of great entries around!

Mind posting a tutorial or at least throw together a few tips on how you do those extremely detailed muscles? :D

You rock m8! :airguitar

sorry that I didn't read through all the posts, just glanced over most, but didn't really notice a comment about the BoB's pose being unbalanced, I mean in reality,he is so heavy in the buuer torso, there is no way he wouldn't fall flat on his nose in that poisition, his arms shouldn't be going straight down but rather at an agle forward so as to support the massive weight on the front :)

Otherwisde amazing detail great job so far :)

Oh, one other thing that is bugging me. This beast is good...oh yes...the best most defined mesh imaginable.....but.....after many years myself going to the gym owned by a world top 10 body builder...I know that the only way to look like that is to drink nothing but celery juice for 4 weeks, whilst working out with weights which weigh less than feathers cos you haven't the strength to lift your finger.....the rest of the time pro bodybuilders look a little fat around the middle and there is a layer of fat covering the muscles...they are still defined but no so much as we would see at a competition......

So.....my only problem with this beast is its lack of any fat tissue.....my 3 cents....

Otherwsie a great job.....

Fair enough reasoning on the arm, the other thing that bothers me about the arm is the lack of the elbow in there, I mena through the muscle you can see where th joint is, but no matter how muscular the arm is wour would see some solid and skin fold in the back area of the elbow as there is no muscle (or nerves for that matter other than in the epidermis on the bottom of the elbow, pinch it as hard a s you like it won't hurt :)

That last render is amazing though simply amazing I'm just being picky to make myself feel better ;)

512 ram and 80Gb Ide Raid + aditional 40 Gb Maxtor. Board is Asus a7v266e. It works OK and stable, faster than dual P3's at job. If you're working with Maya you better get some profi Gl card ( gl 8800 at least) or you're going to restart Maya occasionaly for getting the Gl back in some windows, its not good for Max either, ohh this should go to the hardware forum,

There are quite a few really top notch true professional pieces of art within this challenge. Really great talent around here. But this one and a few others even stand above those. Fantastic in all phases Mandrake, you should be very proud of yourself with these creations of your's. I am very impressed.:applause:

In all detsails and overall look it is excellent. That Beast is one bad arse tough muscled Biatch............I have lifted weights for many years, and can really say that the structure and muscles of your beast are second to none. Just 5 star work and I just wanted to say totally great art ( Given you have, as Yoda would say)....................

  :)
