Before I start, I just want to say that everyone had wonderful entries, and I'm extremely happy that people followed through on this idea. As corny as it sounds, it's a great way to build a sort of community among the people of the board, and so far it's been working wonderfully. Many people (myself included) were finally given the motivation to post work for the first time, and were able to do so without the nagging doubt that their piece won't pass muster. I hope the Sketch of the Day continues to be just as popular in the future, if not more so. :applause:

Now on to my votes... I didn't want to break any rules, so I kept voting limited to those sketches that were done on time.

DAY 1 - FREEFALL

1st. AgentJ - Brain
Definitely my favorite - I love the monochrome blue, it really helps to contribute to the worry on the guy's face - he definitely doesn't look happy that his brain is skipping town without him. The use of dark to really imply the deadly drop down your back is great, as well.

2. mjm - Falling guy #2
This is really cool - I love how stylized it is, it really could be part of some comic that I haven't read yet. I really like the use of vertical lines in the sky, and the implied flapping of arms.

3. Archeophant - Guy with gun
I really like the speed that this one implies. The character of the lines, background, and even the coloring all imply a lot of motion, and it reall helps push your eye back and forth across the picture.

Honorable mention goes to AJ_23's Frog.

DAY 2 - FROM BEYOND

1. AJ_23 - "From Beyond the Stars"
Great graphic approach to the concept. The warm color pallette screams 'Mars' (which I'm sure you already knew). Definitely is individual in both style and approach.

2. Archeophant - Orange Alien
Both scary and cute - I don't really know how. I think the crazy word bubble helps.

3. Kieronh - Glow(?) Fish
Great colors and I love the fish's expression. Good muted greens really help with the under water setting.

Honorable Mentions to vinylequinox and Rio Yeti.

DAY 3 - MAN EATER

1. Kieronh - Dog
A very traditional image with a rather creepy twist, and a style that is often used to handle both. You said you were worried about the amount of color you used - well I am of the opinion that it's just right. Really helps to accent the red, and also avoids muting the effect of the finger.

2. zzacman - Human Baked Potato
Possibly one of the most unsettling drawings I have ever seen. Nice work :D

3. Goro - Worm
I really like the scene, reminds me of Dune. Very few scenes have been submitted recently, so this one really stands out. Love the guy in the bottom with his torch, as well.

Honorable mention to Ilikesoup - TGI Friday's?

DAY 4 - MONKEY WITH A GUN

1. Goro - Assassin
I love this one, it really strikes a chord with me. It has a very traditional look, but that monkey in the tree seems kind of like a jealous lover or something, gunning for the ape that stole his love away.

2. Supervlieg - Age of Discovery
Very cute, very funny. Yet maintains importance by hinting at the potentially disasterous outcome...

3. zzacman - Morpheus
That is frighteningly accurate. Like the comic book feel and intensity on the monkey's face.

And that's it, great sketches all around.

There's really a bunch of great entries. One thing that I'm learning from my observations is that concept is everything and mood is a close second.

Free Fall:
1. zzacmann - I like that I'm looking at the effects of a freefall rather than the fall itself.

From Beyond:
1. Kieronh - the mood rocks.
2. Ivars - I love the style used with your gnome. A well done drawing.
3. AJ_23 - again with the style. I like vector looking images. This would work well as a flash animation.

Man Eatter:
1. zzacmann - sweet concept. Well done.
2. Agent D - The mood dominates the drawing. You're characters are also interesting. The drawing makes me want to know more about their adventures/life.
3.Kieronh - nice twist. BAD DOG

First of all: great initiative.
It's wonderful to see what so many different talented people can come up with for the same theme...
My favourites at this moment (yes, at this moment... when I look through them all again tomorrow or later it'll probably shift quite a bit...) would be:

Freefall:
derbyqsalano - If you call this a sketch, you've got some pretty high standards.
Mdme_sadie - For some reason I like the grainy sketchiness of the whole picture and the point of view.
digital_bobert - Too amusing for words.

From beyond:
vinylequinox - This one I remembered best a day after going through the thread. I like the colour scheme.
supervlieg - The atmosphere oozing from this picture fits the topic wonderfully.
broodingwolf - I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think the reason I chose this one for a third is the way the hair of that zombie was done with the dots.

Man eater:
zzacmann - Disturbing as hell... I love it.
SteveV - 10 minutes well spent I'd say, I love the dynamics in this sketch
Artemesia66 - Teeth, endless mouth and dripping blood... Nuff said
Honourable mention for NoPancakeMix - Aye, it -is- just plain wrong...

Freefall: thesightsmith, simple yet beautiful. Im glad you left it rough rather than trying to clean it up too much. It flows nicely. Is it rain, is it spit, is it poop? Who knows.

Beyond: aminator, great pose, great detail. The one with the horse and arrows is okay too. Just kidding, good work.

ManEater: Cyro: I was contemplating doing something similar, but you pulled it off better than I could have. I like the devil using chopsticks. I don't know why, but I can't stop thinking about that.

Honorable Mentions: buzzz3D, great coloring, looks like pastels. You would make the illustrators over at Pixar nervous.
UnlikelyCorny, I've always appreciated that sort of thing. It could go on forever. Like it does in my dreams. Damn I need to stop drinking.

I think it's really nice i've been nominated by some people i'm happy people enjoy my scribbles :)

But i'm afraid assigning sketches of the week is going to turn this into a mini-contest for some people, and might chase some people away who are not feeling super-confident about their scribbles.

The daily sketch group should imho be for fun, for creating ideas, for trying to make the best scribble you can make that day but knowing that it's all good if you didn't have your day and wanted to contribute something, knowing that even if you're a crap drawer people are going to enjoy your funny scribbles anyway just because the sketch thread is for fun and practise.

With nomination sketches of the week we might end up dividing the scribblers into a 'good' and a 'bad' group, not a good idea i think.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
And although it's nice to be nominated, all this time we're now spending on looking back who made the best sketch this day or that day, we could have been drawing!
I couldn't make fridays sketch but I would have loved to do one yesterday or today. So I hope this will become a 7 days a week Sketch Forum.

I don't have a major problem with voting (other than the fact that half of the people didn't do it right), but I would definitely prefer 7 days a week drawing. A sketch of the week would still work fine, there would just be more days to consider.

Big thanks to those who voted for me.
Following are my votes. There were many nice drawings in it self, but I mostly looked at how people have interpreted the theme and developed their concept. I feel that there was a lot of craftmanship, but maybe a little less orginality. Nevertheless great fun. I would keep some sort of voting system, it just spices things up a bit. Otherwise things might get a bit boring after a while.

Hey everybody,

You know I spent a lot of time contemplating on what I would say in regard to the whole contest thing. Normally I am against any voting system when it comes to art, but hey I got votes (just kidding). Seriously, I feel that voting and picking the best of the best throughout the week in a sketch group can in fact be a good thing. Let me explain, the thing people look for most in their artwork is a sense of connection with the audience, so in a way voting is much like a critique, maybe you felt your point was well portrayed but after having a very diverse group of people nit pick and point out the good vs. the bad can really put things into perspective. Ok maybe I really should change something here, maybe I need to change some composition, and maybe my 6th grade art teacher was right after all. Moreover having someone look at your work is good, having someone scale your work in contrast to others who have submitted when given the same source material (theme) really can do the trick. I think this will work....but hey I could be wrong. Thanks for listening.

I don't have any objection to their being a voting thread. But it might be best to narrow it down to a single 'best of the week' vote, rather than even a best of the day vote. (Or the 3 votes per day that the majority of people here voted for.) Also, if we're going to vote on the topics, then the time-limit should be inforced. I'm not saying people can't submit things to the threads after the time is up (I don't really have an opinion on that one way or another). But only pieces that fit into the criteria set before us should be considered for voting.

Congratz folks... I'd say that sketch group is a success. Roberto, that is a nice trophy there... got me thinking that we should have a side-subject this next week... design the trophy. Anywho, it's been great participating with such talented artists. May we all learn a lot and have some more fun. Just imagine a year from now, we'll have 363 days worth of sketches (you know, we're missing 2 from this past weekend) and we can vote on "The Sketch of the Year" :thumbsup:

Roberto that trophy is perfect. I don't think you should work on it anymore. Like Mananetwork mentioned; "you should make a sketch of that trophy". It should be just as sketchy as the sketches themselves.
