stewartjones 02-01-2006, 04:59 AM Don't worry about that test... If I see your posts now, I'm sure you'll be fine on the english thing. But I don't think it matters that it's an international school concerning language questions... The point is we need to be able to understand and make ourselves clear in English.

Thank god I learnt both bad English, and ok English! :D ... I have to admit, I'm more fluent in bad English!

There are no set number of questions on this test... it will continue to ask you questions until the time limit is up. So you can't finish it, you can only answer X amount of questions in X amount of time.
This test is designed to gauge your overall understanding of the english language and your basic cognitive skills. It is timed to discourage you from cheating... if you take the time to look up a word or break out the calculator, you will answer fewer questions. You want to answer as many questions right as possible, otherwise they will think you don't quite comprehend the english language or have substandard cognitive skills.
The school is not designed to handle language barriers... it is assumed that the material will be understood when read or spoken directly. This test will most likely trip up those who don't quite understand the english language well enough to comprehend the material as it is presented in this school. For example, say you were Japanese and did not read or speak english as a second language. When you watch a lecture, you don't comprehend what is being said because you don't speak the language. This is not to say that you are unintelligent, just that the school is not equipped to handle a multi-language curriculum at this time. If you have to constantly translate things, you will have difficulty with the material as it is presented.

don't worry if you can understand and speak decently, you won't have any problem with the exam.
And yes there was about 30 questions. But i leaved some in blank, because for that kind of tests is better to leave the blank and not to guess, because for every bad answer i think they discount from the good answers.

This "internet" school vs. "real" school has been beaten to death and there's no point in trying to explain how it really is to those who just believe what they want to believe.
A real school is where you actually learn something.

hey man..
exact same situation here.. except that i have money for 4 terms.. i still didnt figure out a way to get money for the 5th and 6th..
but ill tell u what.. I joined AM because, i thought three lakh rupees..(three hundred thousand).... for 9 months with Animation Gods? I'll take it! I think I learnt so much in my first term, i am darn sure that by the end of those 12 months that i have money for, i can get pretty much any job as "animator" in India, atleast. I am planing to go abroad tho.. before I run out of money. I think thats the only way we guys could finish the course. we simply cant take a job in India, work 16 hrs a day and get 500$ a month and hope to save enuff for AM. I am pushing off of my beloved Indian Land as soon as possible, so that I could finish my flirt with AM and then come back to India with a big smile and a giant ANIMATION MENTOR label in my resume.
As far as taking breaks.. i think u can take a break between terms. I plan to take one break after term 2.. (and thus getting enuff money in time for term 4) then do term 3 and 4.. then take a break... that way, the whole course will take me about two years.. which is not bad at all.. Heck, i wouldnt mind three years, if I could finish it. I think we can take breaks, and then continue from where we left off..
Here is my take on this.. Join AM, do first term, do second term and work very hard at learing animation.. take a break, build a demoreel, jump offshore (singapore/US are the only ones on my list) ...start earning/eating only once a day/saving...... rejoin AM, work ur ass offf.. finish AM... Get back to India, and get payed in dollar salaries... get a nice girl and live happily ever after.....
but dont jump into this because Im saying.. think hard... for 7 lakhs, u can buy a decent plot of land, and the way hyderabad is growing, something in the outskirts will fetch u easily double the amount invested in about two years... So, dont get into this for money. its not money.. its about doing animation for a living, which ofcourse, if u love it enough, it will give u money eventually. India is growing rapidly and getting a good paying job in India isnt an issue after six months of AM. (we have a guy from Tata elaxsi in AM, working hard and paying his fee)... so its doable, but think hard wether u love animation enuff.. If u think u cant do AM at this point, go the "self-learning and getting a job" way... and get hired in good company and work for two years.. then u would have enuff salary to save money and then do AM two terms a year. And aim at DQ for a job.. right now they are hiring trainees and they have a guy from disney, some one named muller, ex disney animator.. training their animators.. thats an awsome start.
Hope my long reply helps.
dj
Hi,
I am very keen to join AM. But i have one problem. I can only afford to pay for first three classes. There are six in all. So will i get certificate for those three? Will it be good enough? I know i must do the full thing but i donthave that kind of money right now to invest. Also i am not sure if i will get a loan for doing an online course. The banks are willing to give loans for studying abroad but not for online courses. nd 14,000 USD is equivalent to approx. 7,00,000 INR(INDIAN Rupee). Pls suggest if its ok to do first three classes and build a profile and land yourself a decent job and then later i can pursue from where i left.
Pls advice and guide.

Hey guys I am very new to animation and these forums. I checked out AM and it looks great.
I am 17 so around Fall I can go. My birthday is in September. I checked the website for dates but I don't think it had any dates specified for Fall...oh well.
I do have a question though and its about drawing. I looked around in the admissions part of the website and it had nothing about needing any drawing/sketching skills (im pretty sure). But when I looked around other parts of the website you guys seem to draw a lot. So where do my drawing skills need to be upon applying?
I intend to improve my nonexistent drawing skills but do I need to go hardcore in time for the course? Anything else I should do to prepare?
Thanks!

Thanks!
For me and many others, AM is great!
Any amount you can improve drawing skills will always help. Unless you plan to animate in 2D, the primary purpose of drawing in AM is to capture poses and plan animations.
The easier it is for you to capture the essence of poses with stick figures, the easier it will be to plan animations and test out different ideas before you begin working on the computer.
I've seen some of my class 2 peers thumbnails recently and just kinda gone....woah, my drawing skills bite! But they are improving gradually and they are fair enough, along with my memory and visualization skills to adequately capture the poses I'm needing.
This is by no means an accuate statistic, but I've gotten the impression that about half of the animators are what I would call good at drawing and the other half just draw well enough to plan whatever they need to plan.
Of course, the more I draw, the more I realize how much fun it is to just doodle. One thing I've observed for me is that drawing with a Wacom is quite a bit different than drawing with a pencil. I think it's just the disconnect between looking one place and drawing another. Obviously for you Cintiq owners this doesn't apply ;)
Regarding things to practice, yes drawing is good. I'd takea pencil and paper to the park or somewhere and try to capture simple poses of people in real life situations.
It's not near as important, but if you already are able to get whatever 3D package you'll be using then also spending a little bit of time just familiarizing yourself with it will help.

Yeah, don't freak out so much about drawing. If you plan to animate in CG, drawing is more like an effective method of communicating your idea to others, as well as to yourself. Some schools make you learn how to draw in charcoal, render out perfect line/edge quality where the core shadow and cast shadows meet, etc. All that can benefit your animation (like playing an instrument, stage acting skills, eating broccoli so u have health and energy to animate, etc.), but it's not worth stressing over at this point.
I would like to drastically improve my gesture drawing skills for personal reasons. When you plunge into this program, you will make yourself draw and sketch, if you take planning seriously. So don't worry, you will have plenty of practice.

Count me in on needing to improve on my current drawing skills!
If you are doing your animation in the computer, then your skills in drawing need to be good enough to show ideas in quick, simple sketches... Or stick figures! It's gotten me this far through Animation Mentor! Of course, any extra drawing/sketching you can do is a bonus, so get to it! :)

I read thru a book yesterday thatīs recommended by the school, "simplified drawing for planning animation" (www.anamie.com). This is recommended by every Mentor Iīve been talking to so far, and it shows best how much you need to be able to draw.
Besides that, yeah, get fluid in animating in your favourite 3D package, so you donīt get slowed down by the software.
And get "Richard Williams Animator Survival kit" and "The Illusion of Life" and read through both of them.
With that, youīll be perfectly prepared for the AM-Experience (play THX-sound here)

Actually, I'm doing 2D at AM, and I don't know how to draw eather. I'm practicing, but I'm not 'there' yet. The thing is, you don't even need to be able to draw well to learn how to animate in 2D. You can learn ALL the principles and workflow etc, with simple circles and stickfigure type characters (you'll just want to put a bit of volume in arms and legs instead of them just being one line). It's only when you start going more indepth, or really want to create a reel-piece, that you're gonna want to be able to draw. Let's hope I'll get there.

No, I'm 99.999% sure AM does not have any plans to expand to different fields. Perhaps if someone else decided to start up a similar thing, they might team up, but I very much doubt - due to the animation background the founders have - they'll create such a thing themselves. They'd rather just focus on animation courses and constantly improve on those.

As far as I know, animationrigs isn't really similar to animationmentor at all. There are some similarities, sure, but the overall thing doesn't seem to come near the level of communication AM has. And a mentor starting up a similar thing is something really different than AM starting something up in a different sector.

The situation was my fault because I waited sooo long. I waited because I had a huge job opportunity days before the deadline. It was a job in Cali and I would have to move across country. I thought 100% I had it (they even flew me out to Cali for an interview) and wasn't sure how much time I would have to give to AM. Of course a day after the last possible time I could give my info to AM, I find out I didn't get the job and AM gave my spot to someone else(rightfully so). So AM held me a spot for April 3rd.

I really didn't like mirage too much, it is really not as streamlined an app as it should be if animation is the goal. I have also used pap it is very streamlined but the base tools lack alot of necessary tools to retime animation. Now when mocking up 2d animation for my assignments at AM I like to use toonboom studio. It is not perfect but it is definitly suited for animation much more than PAP or Mirage imho.
As far as pixar using mirage for mock ups.. I have never heard anything like this from my pixar mentor or others at school. Where did you here that?

Mirage is okay for 2D animation but I am more of a fan of FlipBook Pro. Mirage is trying to be too many different apps while FlipBrook Pro strictly for 2D animation and it shines at it. For some people Mirage works but I find that its focus should be on 2D Animation and not a Photoshop/Painter/AfterEffects wannabe.

Mirage was a little hard to get into. There are a lot of features. But it really grew on me. Between the other traditional software, for me, it came closest to a rolling feature (which was one of the most important things for me), setting the keyboard to the side, I can easily roll my animation with the forward and backward arrows, while still drawing with the other hand.

Welcome new recruits!
welcome aboard! AM is so awsome!
The minimum requirement for doing AM is to leave ur egos behind. Be prepared for hard crits from the AM-brotherhood. Thats the most important thing! and then, the second thing is.. learn some swearing. You would do that on a daily basis! it aint a cake walk, but its more like a roller coaster ride. you cant stand it when u are doing it, but u still want to do it... u know. in those situations, swearing a lot helps(disclaimer : you should swear in private and to urself. we are not responsible for any reprecursions.) ..the other requirement is that all of you have to come to my workspace every week and give ur crits on my assignment submissions. If you do this without missing even 1 week, u are entitled for an extra cookie in the end. How ever, if you fail to fulfil the requirement of critiquing my work, u are disqualified and the spline gods will curse on you .. :p

I hope that animationmentor will still be alive over 4/5 years.I really want to join, but I'm only 14 and haven't finished high school yet:love:.Do you guys think that it still will be going over 4/5 years?
Hey there youngster ;)
Well it sounds like you are ready to get animating. Remember to enjoy highschool and be a kid for a while. You might also want to take some traditional art and cinemetography classes before you delve whole heartedly into animation. But when the time comes I'm sure AM will be going strong, and we would happy to have you as an addition to the campus.
Until then, you can check out this site:
http://www.acmeanimation.org/
It's a non profit animation education site, focused mainly on teenage/highschool animation students. It doesn't cost any money and you can become part of the animation community now, until you are old enough to join AM. Then when the time comes for AM you will already be ahead of the game.
Good luck and happy animating.

I personally love Mirage, it's a fantastic app. A perfect compliment to any animation pipeline.

As far as pixar using mirage for mock ups.. I have never heard anything like this from my pixar mentor or others at school. Where did you here that?
James
Actually my Pixar mentor from last term ended up using it and getting into it so it might be possible that there's talk going around there about it, but I haven't heard anything about him actually using directly for work at all.

Please keep in mind that although AM has chosen Maya as it's supported software platform (for the 3D animators), it is not professing that you must use it. There are a number of people using Softimage, MAX, Lightwave and Animation:Master. The only real benefit to using Maya at AM is that they provide rigs and custom scripts to aid in the animation process. You get some technical support, but all in all, the school is NOT about teaching you the software, but rather animation... as it is applied to any medium, be it paper, clay or CG.
Also, most major studios use proprietary software or modified versions of off the shelf software... so while it may be Maya on the box, it's not the same Maya that you or I can get because of all the custom scripts and code being run inside it.
I will concur that if you are absolutely new to character animation in 3D, that you get your feet wet in your chosen application BEFORE starting AM. You don't want to be spending your time figuring out why the viewport windows are all messed up when you should be animating. While the school accepts both professionals and novices alike, you will find that those who have done a little of this before are not struggling as much with the software as those who are. And believe me, we all struggle with the software, so don't expect to avoid software snafus entirely... software is written by humans and humans err.
And believe it or not, the mentors get really excited when they see work being done in stop motion or 2D... a number of them started out in those mediums so don't think of AM as a 3D animation school... there's a wealth of experience in the other mediums that can be tapped into... and they are more than happy to see you do nothing but 2D or stop motion... or a mixture of all three. Talk about flexibility... when was the last time you could choose to do animation in a specific medium on the fly?

I plan on doing a combination of 2D and 3D at AM. I don't know about stop motion though.

Just be comfortable enough in whatever medium you choose. You don't want to be frustated in your drawing abilities or fighting a battle with whatever 3d application your using when you should be spending that time animating. There's just so much to learn and take in at AM that you don't want to waste time fighting battles and sometimes people just become so focused on the technology which is just another medium/tool that it begins to hamper your learning b/c you don't know how to use that perticular tool correctly.

Here is my experiences. I would go with Maya.
1. Like pmiles said not b/c it's better or worst, it's b/c that what AM chosen for their school. Also they have little scripts, trainings video to help u.
2. I can't rig or model facial blend shapes ma do ma jigie to save my life. AM supplies models for u so u don't have to spend time model and rig your own characters. U can just start doing your assignments. (Also in class 4 their lip-sic character is amazing. I can't wait to animate it!)
3. If u do decides to use maya, DON'T use the PLE version. The reason is at the end of the term AM wants u to compiles all your assignments. I saw some of my classmate compilations of their end of term assignments with nice well lid animation and music. It was wonderful and very professional looking. While mine, since I used PLE version it has watermark on it and for me anyway it doesn't give a nice presentation once I put all my assignments together. I now brought student version and b/c I wanted to render out my 1st term animation again with nice lighting and no distractions of watermark...well PLE file doesn't opened in maya student version. So now I have to redo all my first term animation again.
Anyway, I hoped my little story gave u some idea on your decisions making and welcome to AM!

Hi,
Is there a mentor for producers/managers in the media or atleast the animation world.
My request might be absurd to many. But We producers do need a guild or a forum to communicate and share various production ideas. This can enable us to strengthen our pipeline knowledge and also plan an entire project.
Any one can comment to annu_muthu@yahoo.com

So, I am thinking of signing up for animation mentor, but I would really like to speak sort-of one-on-one with someone who is attending now, or has finished the course. I've read the catalog and the info on the site, and I've gone through a bunch of the posts here, but there are still some things I would like to know about from someone who has experienced the class. Is there anyone that might be interested in speaking with me on AIM or even on the phone. I would really appreciate it. Or if you can direct me to another resource that would help me get more info that would be good too. Thanks.

Thanks for the encouragment Nitefyre and mmkelly011881, you're dead right, you don't get everything you want exactly when you want it, it's a good goal for me to work toward.
Anyway, what are you two doing wasting precious seconds typing replies to me for? Get off the forum and get back to work!! LOL, best of luck to all of you!

hi dangermouse, as of right now I think AM's financial aid is only for US students. But the school is growing so fast, so you never know what the future holds. I wouldn't be surprised if their financial aid service only grows in years to come. Until then I think the advice to plan ahead is good. Start saving now and make a plan to join AM a year from now, it's worth the wait, especially if you have a dream of becoming a character animator, there is no better or more affordable school on the subject so I would say just hang in there! Also not taking the entire course all the way through might be a good plan for you, you can take a few semsters off to work and save, then register for a course, then work and save, then take another course. It would take longer this way but you could be practicing your animation even in the months you weren't registered for AM. A slower pace might actually be more rewarding in some ways.
As for all you AM deadline watchers, good luck! I better see these finals on your blogs come Monday morning...ahem sorensons or something linux friendly please!!! I am so excited and can't wait to see everyone's finals!
go team AM!

Financial service plans will unfortunately never cover international students. And rightly so , would you give money to someone whom you have no guarantee of getting it back? You can always apply to financial aid if you have a relative in the US or someone else that is willing to sign up as a cosigner , or get a education loan from the bank in your own country.

Hello to everybody
and happy first birthday to AM!
I ,too ,have recently been accepted in the Spring quarter and can't wait to get started. One question though. Has everybody in Spring quarter received their student IDs because I submitted paperwork and payment pretty close to the March 24 deadline and I have the feeling that something went wrong with them. Propably just being paranoid again but I had to ask ...
And don't forget , keep swimming

Thanks Sean, appreciate the kind words. I will definitely be animating like mad on my break, trying to apply everything I've learned at AM over the last year. Wooo!!
Congrats on getting Doug, he is an uber talented animator and I am glad to see he is doing the Advanced Acting class because he absolutely kicks butt in that. Man you are going to learn so much!
And oh yeah, keep thuggin! :)

04-01-2006, 10:54 PM
Thanks Brian, i'm really happy about having an animator like Doug for advanced acting.
i admire you for deciding to take a break at this point in the AM program. i think it's a really good idea to take some time off to solidify and really grasp what you've learned so far. i was sooooo close to taking this semester off as well, just cause i'm feeling pretty overwhelmed with how deep we've gone into animation. i've only finished class 3, i can't imagine how i'll feel after class 4! You learn soooooo much, soooooo fast at our school, and for me, it takes everything i have just to keep up with you guys.
Best of luck to you Brian, come back to AM soon. : )
P.S. Thuggin' rules! : )
