US daylight savings occurs on the 3rd of April, here in the UK it happens tonight. We lose an hour - 12:01am GMT becomes 1:01am BST.

This means that this week, and this week only, for UK people 9pm PST is 6am and NOT 5am.

It's confusing (I'm personally exhausted from the mental effort) but there should be enough talk about it from everyone on the site on monday that I guarentee that we'll all be alot more confused before we're not.
Joking aside, by Tuesday night everyone should be pretty confident in what time they should set their alarms for.

I'm in Delio Tramontozzi's group too. I'm so excited my thumbs are rattling. :)

Hey guys,

I'd like to think so, so that I can do the same, but I doubt it. For a start they say the AM site won't be accessible for Mac's, and secondly, afaik the iSight only works with applications that are specifically coded to work with it (iChat and a few other OS X apps). I think my only hope is finding some way of running Windows via RDC, and having iSight work via that, but I think that's doubtful.

I'm as excited as everyone else about this but what the hell are these guys thinking?
If different mentors are taking different regions as seems to be the case then why on earth is the Q&A session at 5am GMT? I love animation and learning as much as the next guy but I'm not waking up my wife and kid at 4:50am to go and turn on my PC just so I can sit there bleary eyed and pretend I'm awake - It's nonsensical - what kind of question am I going to be asking at 5am? C'mon get real! This has to be a mistake!

Hi Guiliguili,
Right, the 9 PM PST meeting will be at 7 PM for you (PST is Pacific Standard Time). BUT, when Daylight Savings Time begins on April 3, you may be three hours behind instead of two hours behind.

So far in the Alleneck bunch, you are the farthest west and Pixeltales is the farthest east in Arizona. But that's only what we know so far--I'm not sure about darkefire and mayakindaguy.

I am from Taiwan and have Chris Hurt as mentor, woo hoo!
Jozvex, jono338, ngarte, textureyes, and AKS, I am so glad to be in the same group with you.
And as long as I know, there are another 2 colleges of mine joining AM. One is an animation supervisor, who's mentor is Chris Hurt as well. The other one i presume with high chances will be in the same group...that means plus 3 more.:scream:

The first Mentor Q&A and Global Orientation will be at 1pm and 1:30 prm on Wednesday respectively, and at that time will still be working hours, and it's a shame that USB plug is locked in the company, so there's no chance to use a webcam. In addition to that it'd be quite disturbing to talk and laugh while fellow collegues are working their butts off.
So either 3 of us ask the company a possibility to book the video conference room or either will have to take a day off, with dailies burning at the buttom of course. Even if plan A could work, I don't know if it's violation of the AM regualtion that the account can soley be used by one person, even if we all are regiestered students?

I am hoping that it does, I have a cam for my PC but it would be so nice to do it on my mac.
The site is built in flash MX and the isight does work as a webcam within flash's built in camera object. The only question is whether we will be able to navigate to that part of the site.

I am hoping that it does, I have a cam for my PC but it would be so nice to do it on my mac.
The site is built in flash MX and the isight does work as a webcam within flash's built in camera object. The only question is whether we will be able to navigate to that part of the site.

Oh really? That's good news then, I didn't realise iSight worked with Flash. Here's hoping the site works enough to use it!

I got my proof of enrollment a little while ago, and my student ID and login shortly after. Still don't know my mentor though!

Why should it? It was clearly stated in the FAQ that the students would have to fit their hours in the mentor's schedule. These are working pros, they can't just do this anytime of the day...

I'm soooo seriously jealous of y'all! And I just found out that Dave Burgess was one of the animators on Genie too, besides Gaston and all those other great characters... Wow! If I were his mentee (or anyone's for that matter) I wouldn't let any of the other students ask any questions :p

Today was probably one of the first days I completely devoted to animation. Read the making of Aladdin, watched it too of course, drew a bit, observed my cat and dog... I even got to see how my cat chased down a spider (oh how I hate those creatures), and then when she hit it, it actually pretended to be dead, until she hit it again! And about a minute later it was eaten alive.... it was so great to see that happen (not to see something die, of course, but just the whole thing as a whole)! The movement and timing and anticipation, of both the spider and cat, were sooo special, and showed exactly what they felt. Wonderful moments, and wonderful day... can't wait to spend everyday like this next year :)

Yeah, but to be fair, if you paid to go to a traditional school, you'd be pretty irritated if the lecturer told you to come in at 5am because he was doing something else in the day. We're paying for tuition, it makes sense that it is at a time that is cognitive to learning, and that isn't 5am for most people

Still, it doesn't bother me since I'm a nightowl and a 5am video session isn't much later than my bed time so an hour or two up later won't bother me. I can see why it would irk others though.

I got my mentor! Ike Feldman! So chuffed with that!

Jeeze..suck it up! If my assigned Q&As are at an ungodly hour for me, well then so be it! I know I'm paying for the course and all, but guess what.. I'm coming to *them* for help, not the other way around it. I'll work around their schedule. Besides, it's the Q&A. Figure out your questions ahead of time, at a time when your brain functions. LOL. You don't even have to talk..just hold them up to the webcam like cue cards!!

Hey I asked a couple of questions to Bobby, and he responded quickly as usual. Thought I'd pass this info on to you all. There is the constraint of only being able to view the current week's assignment 3 times. However, your video crits do not have any constraint. You can view those as much as you'd like. You can also view previous crits too.
Also, the first week will have a video class for us to watch, which is awesome. Plus! There will be a bunch of other stuff to view. So I'm figuring even though there isn't an assignment due, there will be plenty o' stuff to keep us going until week 2!

Holy cow! Look at everyone posting from out of the woodwork...so many new names all of a sudden, that's great.

What does everyone plan to ask their mentor in the first q&a? ("can we postpone this until a more decent hour?" doesn't count!).

Also, are our first scheduled mentor q&as in groups then or one on one? I'm guessing groups.

This should be a very informative program for anyone considering a career in animation and it is free.

We are sending this out now as the event is happening soon and we want as many people as possible to take advantage of this important program. Invite anyone who might benifit from this event about it.

CAREERS IN ANIMATION A PANEL DISCUSSION WITH
PHIL ROBINSON, CO-FOUNDER and CREATIVE DIRECTOR of WILD BRAIN
KENN NAVARO, CREATOR/DIRECTOR and ALAN LAU from MONDO MEDIA
ROQUE BALLESTEROS and BRAD RAU, PARTNERS in GHOSTBOT
SURPRISE SPEAKERS FROM TIPPETT STUDIO, ILM and/or PIXAR

SUNDAY, APRIL 3, 1:30 PM (DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME STARTS TODAY) AT SAN FRANCISCO STATE, AUGUST COPPOLA THEATER (Fine Arts 101, between Creative Arts and the Student Union), FREE, PUBLIC INVITED

Careers in Animation is an event designed for people who want to know how to find employment in the local animation industry. Representatives from the industry will discuss the kinds of work they do, how to contact companies, who gets hired, what training you need to get a job, how to impress people who are in a position to hire you (portfolio tips) and other basics. Our panel includes animators who have created character animation for features, and other kinds of animation and effects. This is your chance to get all your questions answered about careers in animation. Please leave your portfolios at home. Come and find out ways to impress companies and land that job or contract.

Hi,

I am from Singapore and I have Chris Hurt as my mentor. I am really excited . The only thing is that the Q&A session would happen around 1-1.30 in the afternoon and at that time I would be in the office and will not be able to attend it.

I wish for this region (of Asia) the timing was either early in the morning and late in the evening. I hope in future the timings work better for us so that we are not stuck in the office at that hour. Even having a session on Friday night (PST) would be fine, as then it would be Sat for us. Anyway I am looking forward and can't wait for the start now

I guess the quickcam messenger is good enough. Lightning/sourrounding noise is more important than getting the best camera out there. I don't believe people use their facial tracking or 1.3 megapixel resolution anyway..

I just picked up my webcam from the shop, and noticed pretty instantly that my audio will be great (the nearest computer is 10m away in another room)... But the image looks grainy (poor lightning condition since I stay away from the sunlight as much as possible).. I'll have to install some more lights in the room so that the mentors can see my wild gestures :)

oh. cool script. thanks for posting bent- the only reason i didn't make it global is that if your character rotates more than 360 and then continues animating from that point forwards, you don't necessarily want to run a gimble filter on those nodes (don't know if i'm explaining it properly, but i had an animation with an ik/fk arm switch that i ran it on, and the ik fk blend then did some weird gimble things)

thanks though- i'll get a lot of use out of it :)

i can't remember what the fix was, but on the logitech support site there is the solution to this. you need to do something like in windows run accesories--entertainment--sound recorder, set it to logitech, then it all works.

Bent - I am guessing you clicked the 'webcam' function in MSN, but did you click the 'Audio' button as well?!?!

strange - I have never had a global filterCurve effect any translation [ik] curves in a negative way.

in everyday production and gameplay animation it works very smoothly - so much so that it is a regular hotkey of mine :)

it depends on how the rigs are set up initially and something to do with parent space. it's too boring to go into too much detail, but i'll dig up some files and show you some screengrabs of the graph editor and it'll make more sense.

but i like the hotkey idea. that's a nice workflow.

Sheep and I are having problems starting up audio in MSN Messenger...te video works great, but we cannot hear each other...

If you would like to help us test this out, and try to get to the root of our porblem - bentllama@msn.com is my messenger handle thingy...message me and see if we can connect with an audio and video session...

thanks

Bentllama,

I encountered the same problem, but I took an alternative approach to solve the problem...just take it for reference. The MSN doesn't work on my audio in Pro 4000 and the audio quality of MSN isn't any good anywayz. So I usually use MSN for Video while have Skype for audio, which works just fine, and the delay of sound occurs less than msn too.

I know it's not even to the core of the problem we encountered here, but hey it works:wise:

i got Charles Alleneck as well. so that makes ten, i think.

1. Guiliguili
2. Pixeltales
3. darkefire
4. kirko
5. bobbyc
6. pollywoggles
7. mayakindaguy
8. magicrub
9. Afr_CG
10. kenshi

i think each mentor has a max of ten students, so maybe our group is "full"? we'll see soon enough. i hope we all got assigned the correct mentors. i received the wrong proof of enrollment twice.

here's a link with an image of a short film by Charles. http://www.animafestival.com.ar/ing/08_2001.php
On guy's review was that it was the funniest film in the festival he saw.

look forward to learning with you all!

and i stumbled accross this....

time and date thingy (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/custom.html?cities=136,137,241,179)

it should be able to display your own city and LA of SF and any other city in the world at the same time.

this one is set up for my time zones but you can customize you own and then fav it.

now none of us have an exuse to be late for class again.

Btw.. I noticed I have a serious lag on the audio when using my logitech 4000pro webcam (the audio sounds excellent, but its way out of sync with my wild motions). Have anyone else had problem with it, and knows how to solve it?

I mean my username.

I think because my stuff was late turning up they might have rushed mine through. A while after paying I got an email with my Maya proof which had my student ID on it but when I entered that it said I still had to pay. I emailed Luis and he replied back with my usename and password. I guess he set it up for me since I wasn't able to yet.

Sounds like mine was done in an odd order due to things turning up late :) S'ok, the username I've been given is fine.

well i guess they're tweaking it right now, but what exactly is happening when u say u can't see the orientation video?

Does the video window even pop up, can u not select the option to even go there or is it not streaming?

Remember to go to your workspace and change the connection speed and log out and back in for it to set.

I expect it will be a little wild and wooly in the beginning since we are the first bunch but I'm sure they will go without sleep to have this purring like a cat asap.

I'd leave it for 10 minutes or so - you could even just walk away from the monitor and take this last opportunity to stand outside and look at the sky. As Bobby said, they are tweaking. They've probably got a fair bit of tweaking to do after the initial influx of screaming, dribbling people. It looks awesome.
