originally.. kinetix, a division of Autodesk made 3d studio max
but in 1999 after Autodesk acquired Discreet Logic, they merged both into one company called Discreet

Ah ok thanks! I thought I was going crazy cose my R2.5 copy says it's from Kinetix but people keep refering to this Dicreet 3D max. Now I know.
