Hi, folks. This is don dempsey - I'm the director and vfx supervisor of an indie film called "monstrosity" - a southern gothic, dark comedy variation on the Frankenstein story. We've finally wrapped production and are now currently shooting pickups, inserts, etc. while working on post-production. We already have an international crew of volunteer collaborators working on shots but there are still a few crucial roles that need to be filled. Here are the roles and qualifications I'm looking for:
1) concept artist - someone who is skilled at creating whimsical-yet-sinister designs and is willing to take direction on (potentially) multiple iterations of the design(s). Ability to provide orthographic views of the designs (for modelling) is a plus. Two main sequences that require concept art feature 1) a cutaway view of the monster's internal organs that are integrated with 1940's era technology, and 2) a stylized and extremely original variation on "battlebots".
2) particle fx/simulation guru(s) - the "freezer" scene in the film needs a) breath vapor added to the actors (shot against green-screen), b) frost/powder to fall off a stack of crates when they collapse on the floor (digital crates w/ rigid body simulation), c) a large block of ice crashes to the floor and we need to see shards/pieces of ice hit the tile floor and bounce/slide as appropriate (the shot is a closeup of an actors feet - we see the ice crash around them).
We also need assistance (concept and implementation) with (what I imagine will be) a particle effect of an evil soul trapped in a small art-deco style containment device. We have the physical prop of the device and need to add the "look" of the soul as it interacts with the actors (shot against green screen).
3) character animator - the opening titles will feature a highly stylized, cartoonish, and relatively simple animation of the monster and some of the main characters. CG is welcome, of course, but I would REALLY be amped if I can find a stop-motion or traditional (cel) animator who would be interested in working with us.
4) Also, I have a "wishlist" of shots I would like to add to the film if I can find artists willing to help out with them. The movie will play fine without them, but I believe they would add quite a bit to the production value. They were written out of the script/storyboards due to lack of available artists (the crew we have is busy working on the shots we can't do without) but I would be deliriously happy if I can add them back in. For the wishlist shots, I would need artists with modelling, texturing, lighting, or animation skills.
The running time of the movie will be between 45 minutes to an hour and there are roughly 80-100 fx shots. The style is photoreal with a few stylized elements. The footage was shot on DV (Canon XL-1), the 3d artists are using LightWave, Softimage XSI, 3ds Max, (and the Aqsis RenderMan-compliant renderer for some of the rendering), and we're using AfterEffects and Digital Fusion for compositing (although I'm open to people using other apps as long as they will fit into our pipeline).
This is a non-commercial project involving a crew of volunteers, so unfortunately, I can only offer film credit, experience, permission to use (properly credited) footage in your reel, a copy of the final DVD, and invitations to any film festivals where the movie will be shown.
Thanks in advance for your interest and support. In the next month or so we will be putting up a website to show progress, trailers, tutorials, interviews, etc. so please be on the lookout for it! This is a really fun project that has a lot of time, talent, and love put into it and I think it will be a fantastic opportunity for any additional artists who want to join the crew here at the end (4 months left in the production schedule after almost 3 years of work). Feel free to email if you have any questions or are interested in helping out.
Many thanks!
don
