View Full Version : maya and after effects z depth
sara_qq 06-04-2004, 04:32 PM is there any tutorial how to render animations and then use the z depth in after effects?
i render as rla, chech zdepth in render globals but then...
also...what i really want to use is fluids but i dont know if i render some clouds for example and then in AE add some elements like text, they will appear smoothly from the clouds.

How do you only select certain things within ur scene to render instaed of the rest of the scene??

You are on the right track with the RLA file. Import it into AE and apply the 3D channel Extract filter to it. Set the 3D channel to Z depth. I had to drop the Black and white points way down. I used 1.0 for the black point and 0 for white. Then I applied the levels fitler to help control the forground denstiy. For more info check out Creating Motion Gaphics Volume 2: Advanced Techniques by Chris and Trish Meyer. I hope this helps.

Put the objects you want on a seperate render layer. That way you can choose the layers you want to render.
