I am looking for some nice examples of specular maps. For some reason it has been difficult finding ones that arnt just thrown in as an after thought. Has anyone seen some nice examples just to have a look at and see what gives the best results, specifically for faces and hands but of course it is always good just to see good work.

Many thanks

There's one for a face here if this helps:

yes it does very much :)

but it is funny how that what to me is such an important bit of texturing seems to be so ignored.

Admitedly the colour map is the most important but it is amazing how so many people will spend so much time on a colour and bump and then just drop it, when it comes to the specular, leaving their work look flat and just like all the stuff from the early days, ho hum...

Thankyou jeremybirn

Personally I've always felt the bump map is the most important of the maps, since it adds the tiny surface detail that makes something more real. I generally start with the bump and base my color and spec on that map, as opposed to going the other way.

soulburn3d, Hmnn, at first i thought what are you talking about, how can have a model with a bump map but without a colour map (procedurals have never really convinced me)?!? However, after i thought about it you are right, i would also make the bump map before the diffuse, if for no other reason than to make sure i got the right bits the right colour. The specular is still the thing that gives the model credibility for me though (I still hope to see some to show my AD), i could get away with making a female or child face without a bump but not without specularity, followed closely by ssc.

Well, your bump map doesn't have to be procedural, it can be painted, and you wouldn't want only a bump map, just make that the first map you create. BTW, you probably have been convinced before of procedurals, slapping a straight noise on will look bad but people who do nice layering of procedurals can make very convincing surface (although I'd shy away from using it for humans).

Depending on the model yes, if it should be shiny then a lack of a spec map will definately make the surface look wrong.
