Vote!

Details of this contest are in this thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=134888)

OK folks! here it is! Time to vote for your favorite entries in the Evolution 3DArtToPart.com collaboration contest. Remember that the winners are getting a 3D print of their entry so best of contest should be suited for this final output. The poll option will allow you one choice only.

Now vote!

C&C for the artists or discussion on this contest (would you like to see another collab contest like this in the future?) are welcome in this thread.

Great entries from everyone who had the time to work on them and finish. >> to everyone who participated.

well...I may be one of the only ones, but I voted based on the fact that the topic is EVOLUTION.

And although all of these are brilliant in different ways, some of the more popular ones have ZERO to do with evolution.

06-04-2004, 02:59 PM
Well, I can't tell anyone how to vote but before you do, you should have clicked the link to the thread describing the challenge that Kirt was kind enough to include in this thread. He makes it clear that "Entries are not required to depict "evolution", this is an open-ended challenge". The "evolution" in the case of this challenge, if anyone was wondering, is more about the evolution from concept art to real world object. Just thought I'd clear that up....

Kirt
06-04-2004, 04:57 PM
Yeah, what Teyon just said. "Evolution" is only a title and not the subject of this contest. Please vote for which finished model would make the best 3D Maquette printed by 3DArtToPart.com.

You have to be very critical of areas where the model might be weighted improperly (it'll fall over) or have thin areas (may break under stress).

I'd hate for the winner to recieve a finished print only to have an arm or some other appendage fall off.

-KDX-
06-04-2004, 05:53 PM
ok, well that musta been changed from when I first read the thread.

A loooong time ago, the original idea was to create a concept based on the famous evolution illustration, but with some sort of a twist. So excuse me for not reading up before I posted my last comment, =)

like I said however, they are all very good imho. I just didn't believe they followed the criteria I *thought* I was judging them on.

I got it but then I realized it may not have been meant as humor.

Kirt two things:

1. How long is the voting on for? I think it's safe to say that Fellah and Totitch are kickin' some tail.

2. I would LOVE to see another challenge like this in this forum. Wether it be another 2D to 3D to real world object contest or a contest with some other kind of prize or even just a challenge for the sake of being challenged.

jayreef
06-04-2004, 09:34 PM
If we do another challenge, can we vote it like we did the Alienware challenge, 3 votes per people

I would have loved to have voted for others besides myself (well someone had too lol, [thanks to the other person:) ])

and as for what Teyon said, totally, bring them on:beer:

Kirt
06-04-2004, 10:08 PM
They're all winners if you ask me.

I'd love to see anyone of these characters printed by 3DArtToPart. Plus, now that you have a finished model, and low prices from our sponsor ... even if you don't win the prize you can have these sitting on your desk anyway.

I'd recommend getting a quote from them. You won't be dissappointed. (And if you do get your character printed ... post some pics here!!)

Another contest will happen sometime. No immediate plans as of right now though.

I believe I set 4 or 5 days on the poll option. I also need time to total voting from the CGTalk mods and get voting from the staff at 3DArtToPart.

Allowing multiple choices in the poll might have corrupted the overall voting process. So I went with just first pic. Sorry, the forum doesn't allow any customization of polls for contest voting and such.

Voting by Mods and 3DArtToPart is a little different and point totals will be added up for those yet. So, the final outcome is still up in the air.

Results will be "front paged" when ready so you won't miss it. Should be sometime within the next week.

Grugi: Rules...Rules...Always Rules!
Take it easy with rules! Too much rules kill the rules
And where is the fun in a world of Rules?

You are right. Rules said: "- 2D entry must have front, side, and back ortho views plus a posed illustration of the character. Additional detail views are optional."
But i said at the biggining that i was very busy with my work and i had no time to do more than an illo.
And i did the sketch cause Fellah asked me and i know this bastardo is so talented that he doesn't need more than a simple 3/4 view.
If someone else had ask me to do it in 3D too, i would have help him a little more with some quick sketches. But it wasn't the case! ;)

So let the rules go away and enjoy the chaotic life with us!

Thanks for the congratulations! But all goes to Fellah who really did an amazing stuff!

Ebken: Ahah yes! It's really stat from a RPG!
I want to indicate i was a glorious strong knight with level 99 able to do balls of fire with my a... oups!..
Fellah was a poor little hobbit with a big nose and hairy smelly feet ...with level 2! :D

Thanks.

Fellah: I suggest you to delete those bubbles before you send it to 3DArtToPart.com!!! No?! :D

Kirt

Grugi - Let me just say that you weren't the only person to point this out, so maybe there are others who feel the same way and haven't spoken out. Rules are rules and if we want to be strict about it we could disqualify totitch and fellah on a technicality.

However, as I've already mentioned to someone else (via a PM discussion), I think the totitch/fellah collaboration was successful despite the missing ortho views. If the 2D illustrator is capable of communicating the idea to the 3D modeller and the end result is representative of the concept then ... job well done!

In any professional work environment the boss is only going to be pleased with the end result. Is the job done? Does it meet the needs? Are there any flaws? Noone (in any job) is going to care how many orthos were produced for the end product. They'll look at the finished work and compare it to the concept. If it works, if it's an accurate representation of the design, if it appeals to the public ... it's approved.

Simple as that. I'm not going to penalize totitch/fellah for lack of complete orthos when it's clear that they've met the end result and requirements of the challenge ... to concept in 2D and model in 3D a character suitable for 3D print by 3DArtToPart.

In the end you have to ask yourself, did you enjoy the competition, the collaboration with another artist and maybe learned a thing or two about working as a team? That's the main goal of the contest.

Rules are made to be broken. That's a fundamental of art.
Have fun, explore your boundries and produce art. Not much else matters if you ask me.

Glad you participated and your collab was just as awesome as the others. I hope this doesn't keep you from participating in future mini-challenges.

congradulations Fellah and Totich, the concept and the finished model are fantastic! As wierd as it sounds the dog is my favorite of the two, you really exaggerated the hell out of him, great work. Well, congradulations again on a well deserved victory, you guys make a great team! :)

I think for the sake of fairness that on the next competition you should either have the content be all hotchicks or exclude them alltogether.

EBKen
06-12-2004, 05:38 PM
kirt: well, given what you said, the ortho views shouldn't really have been a rule, don't you think? i mean, why include a rule unless you're prepared to enforce it? perhaps this could be considered for future contests, so all entrants know exactly what is required of them.

i think that doing the ortho 'rule' was to aid the modellers, and show progression of the piece. (Evolution). it would have been nice to see this thread run that way, as the interaction would have been interesting and good learning

When it comes to people that already work together, and can produce work that is flawless, it shows the rest of us how it is done, or what is to inspire too

I have to say that your 2D stuff was amazing, and the modellers did you credit too, if the voting had been for the best laid 2D work, with another vote for the best finished piece, that showed character evolution, the voting might have been different, as would the final result

dont get me wrong, i would take nothing away from totitch anf fellas work, or any one elses, but you put so much time into the 2D side of the competition, that this would/should be rewarded too, a 2D artist has to often return to his work too, as a character evolves.

too all of you

you inspire me and i thank you for it

:applause:

EBKen

thanks jay :D.

i don't have any issue against totitch and fella's entry either, it's great work, and i agree that in their case, a single drawing was all that was needed. all i'm saying is 'rules' should be separated from 'guidelines', so that each entrant knows what is required, in the name of fairness.

additionally - orthos are a bit of hassle to do for characters that don't require it - if it was known to everyone that a 2d entry could be submitted with only a single drawing, then you would immeadiately have more 2d entries, and thus a greater variety for the 3d artists to pick from.

Ebkne:
You said:
"if it was known to everyone that a 2d entry could be submitted with only a single drawing"
I hope you don't think we knew a special rule?
I just took the "risk" (If it is one! :D) cause i had simply no time to do more, but i wanted to do it to see how Fellah would turn it in 3D, for fun and pleasure for eyes.
And as Kirt said before. Important is the result. Nevermind if you do ortho views or not! Ortho views are long and boring to do! And i think it's good to let the modeler some liberty with the modeling. Too much draws can block and destroy the soul of the work...So why doing it if you don't need? I agree!

Rules are made to be broken. That's a fundamental of art!!!

And if more of you guys were thinking that way, i'm sure the state of mind of the forum would be less competitive, more fun and lightly like Art must be! In one word, just like the Forum was at his biginning when we did challenges for fun only, without prize...

We are here to enjoy and have fun all together...For rules, take a job, you will have enough! ;)

Kirt
06-13-2004, 09:40 PM
I'm really not going to say much more about this. In the rules thread there were many questions that were presented about the rules. One of them covered the issue of multiple orthos and I said ...Although it's important to show enough views to demonstrate all the important aspects of the character, I'm going to say that all views are not a requirement for the contest.

As long as you've supplied enough views for the modeller to complete the 3D without having to improvise a large portion of the character. You should be OK.Totitch & Fellah obviously have a great chemestry and have done this type of thing before. However, all of the entries were fantastic! I'm getting the impression that it's the prize that's at issue. Everyone who participated wants one (and I don't blame you).

Unfortunately, we can't do that but you're all welcome to get a price quote from 3DArtToPart! You can have your character printed inexpensively!

Teyon
06-13-2004, 10:05 PM
Aye! They are great! I got a quote recently from them for an unrelated model and now I patiently await to see what they've done! In the end, the point of this kind of challenge/contest is to see how well you work with others and to share our ideas and love for the art. Winning never mattered to me really, just seeing what the great bunch of folks I was able to work with did with my concepts was the pay off for me. It's led to other (very) challenging colabs with some of the crew too, so all the better. Thanks again, Kirt for putting it together.
