this is a portrait I did of William. I like how I did the sketch, but I am afraid that the coloring of the hair and any darker shading will ruin it... if I replace the lines with shading on his face, he will look hispanic or indian when he is white and if I try to color in his hair from it's sketched appearance to a colored appearance, I think that it will look horrible as well... suggestions? http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/9151/willa.jpg

Sorry that it wasn't showing up!!! Thanks for that different hosting site... I hate that geocities, it only shows the pictures I have on half of the forums. *shakes fist at geocities*

Pic is posting ok now. I like what you've got. I feel like I could identify William by this pic if I met him on the street. Anyway, it looks like you composed this pic in layers. If they're still separate, you should work on the shape of his head. It should go to the top of his hair, and there's a bump on (viewer's) right that should be cleaned up. Also, his eyes should be on the same horizontal line. Also, there's a line that cuts through his teeth. Does William have braces? Could use a little more detail there. Lastly, shading looks pretty good as is assuming light source is below the face pointing up.

Nice work.

yeah... I was trying to find out where I should go with his hair... I want to color his hair but I dont want to lose the light feathery look it already has, I guess I'm out of luck there, though.

The bump is just due to me being sloppy...

The line over his teeth is his retainer(which I haven't worked on at all along with his mouth).

The light source is from the front of him and a little lower. He is really tall and I am really short and I took this picture of him in a dark place with the flash on my camera haha.

Thank you for your crits. Any kind of critique is greatly appreciated.

I like the hair also, but I can see where filling it in would be a benefit. You haven't mentioned which graphics program you're using, but if you have now or can make the hair and the face in separate layers you can create a third layer placed between the two that would serve as the "body" of his hair. The feathered brown hair you have now would provide the texture. Just choose a color either light or dark enough that it doesn't block out the existing layer. Hope that helps.

Oops! sorry. I did this in Painter 8 with a wacom tablet. Everything is on a separate layer, yes.

As for adding another layer between the brown hair lines part and the head, that's what I figured I would do, but I think it might take away from it. hmmm... I'm just playing with it right now trying to figure out what I like.
