"MAN EATER" by Batavia
Posted THURSDAY June 3rd 2004: 10:40 US EST
Welcome to the cgtalk sketch group.
We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.
These are the rules:
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* 640 x 480 or 480 x 640
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" o plagiarizing.
* The topics will be posted every day M-F between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The thread will be CLOSED EXACTLY 24hours later.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.
Good luck
-Roberto

This forum is a great idea.
i like to see the different takes people get from the theme. and some of you folks can really draw (you know who you are :D )
Supervlieg and aminator: for some reason both of yours seem kind of funny/cuddly. i think animator's has such big feet, he seems sort of puppy-like to me.
Garma: puts me in mind of Dali--i like it.
here's my first submission, with a nod to "Little Shop of Horrors".

Thanks for this thread; it's not often that I get a chance to inflict anyone but my wife with my newbie graphics AND strange humor -as a matter of fact my wife thanks you as well in the hopes that I'll now leave her alone. ;)
Anyway what follows took about 15 minutes with pencil and then traced with a pen. I want to try to color this in PSP next as I just got a Wacom -not yet comfortable enough with it.
My personal nightmare -reincarnating as one of the 100,000 or so burgers I've eaten in my lifetime. ;)

Sketch 5mins or so, scanned, then cleaned up & coloured in Photoshop for about 40mins. Found it bit hard to decide where to put colour & where to leave it white, so kept changing my mind, ran out of time. Less is more I guess?
Supervlieg - hehe like the limbs poking out.
aminator - nice, like the pose with the head, it looks pissed off :D
feyshtey - looks cool with the scales and armour, knights arm needs more drama though looks like he wants to shake hands :)
NoPancakeMix - heh well thats just some freaky shit :surprised
jawine - like the idea behind this, so did they order a take-away?
bupaje - hehe like it, maybe try starting by doing a Photoshop fill (set to all layers) with the drawing above (on a multiply layer) & building up the colours below?
Cheers,
Kieron

@Keironh - thanks for the suggestion. Still using PSP, wasn't sure exactly how to translate that but I gave some colors a go anyway. 30 minutes for pencil and ink. 45 minutes to color it and add text in PSP8.
I love the variety of styles I see in this thread, giving me ideas of things to try.

Thanks all! This forum is what my group of friends have been waiting for - we've been doing drawings at lunchtime practically every day this year, and now we have some more inspiration on what to draw daily, and a place to post them, get other peoples' reviews on them. The diversity of the entries is amazing!
SteveV : nice and gestural
Goro : the mood of this piece is awesome! nice colours
subculture : love your design
jack_sparrow : good to see you posting! ;)
Garma : I see the Dali - cool
artemesia66 : sorry, but I see a toilet as well - wouldn't want to sit on that, though (ouch)!
feyshtey : nice concept - like the knight addition (should've put a person under my guy's right foot...ah, the always tomorrow's challenge!)
everyone else - keep posting! I know that drawing every day at lunch with other people has increased my output tenfold, and helped me learn other styles - integrated some of it in my own work - you can only get better doing this!

Good work guys. Interesting how most people, when asked to draw a ManEater, draw either a monster or a woman or some combination of the two.
Hopefully most of you got your fill of drawing teeth and claws today. :applause:
I thought I'd go a different route and simply imply the "man-eating" through the entree. Its like a human Baked Potato or stuffed crab.

Lots of cool stuff here, and I love daily sketch thing. This piece started out as a fairly basic sketch, but turned into a 3 hour painting. I used the Pen tool in Painter 8. There was a conflict between a human kingdom and a few nasty things. The nasty things won.
