Can someone direct me to a tutorial on creating a hologram effect similar to the one used in Final Fantasy and Minority Report? I would like to simulate someone adjusting controls on a hologram image. Or if someone here knows how to I would greatly appreciate the information. Thanks in advance!

I think this is similar to the xray shader. If you create a ramp shader then using the ramps make it more transparent towards the centre and more incandecent towards the edges, turn down the diffuse add a little glow you should get that effect. If you're after a colourful hologram you could put a few different colours in the ramp for colour.

you could try the diffraction shaderthat comes with the bonus tools, not sure that you would get the effect you're after, but if it was in your shading network with something like tomb suggested it might work, goodluck anyways, maybe post an image for us to see.

Just to clarify, I think tomb's "transparency towards the center" effect is done with the Facing Ratio Node. I had to reread the post to realize how to do it. :)

Also, isn't this kind of thing usually composited in post?

Thank you for all of your responses. I will get on it and see what I come up with.

I am not sure if this is done in post production or not. When I spoke to Billy Bussey in San Fran, the effect he has in his intro of him adjusting controls, he said it was done in 3DS Max. But he did not go into details on how.
