View Full Version : Maya and GI - When will it happen...
Anchuvi 07-19-2002, 08:06 AM When will Maya have a built in global illumination renderer ? I just read the details on 4.5 and admittedly the new fluid stuff looks nice but every other package seems to have a GI renderer now except Maya...
v5 maybe ?
I know there are plugins available fro downlad but from my experiance these are either very restricted or fiddly to get looking right.

From what I know Maya 5 will have 'better' fluid effects that will act like more types. There was talk of Maya and MentalRay like XSI(not seperate plugin, but default renderer), but those have died down. Maybe Alias will compeletly redo the renderer by themselves, but I doubt it.
ILM and others that use Maya, don't seem to use it's renderer for production, they go Renderman, as they do with Softimage, and the rest of the group. My own corporate theory here- unless the big guys ask for it, they won't rush to do it...

there is the free BMRT renderer out there - which i think has indirect lighting or/and irradiance
it is a renderman compliant renderer so you have a chance of learning all the top stuff using a top renderer for free
here's a quote from the bmrt site - i think it's worth a try
BMRT is a ray tracer that has been used in the production of several feature films, including A Bug's Life, Stuart Little, The Cell, Hollow Man, and Woman on Top.

if they bundle maya with mental ray the price tag will be raised
i'm happy with the current situation - especially now that there are so many renderer out there - many of them will be brought to maya too so there will be a lot of choice

yeah - here's a snippet from the docs
http://www.exluna.com/products/bmrt/bmrtdoc/2.6/node4.html#SECTION00440000000000000000
Indirect Illumination
Ray tracing will determine illumination only via direct paths from light sources to surfaces being shaded. No knowledge of indirect illumination, or interreflection between objects, is available to the ray tracer. This kind of illumination is responsible for effects such as indirect lighting, soft shadows, and color bleeding. BMRT actually has two different algorithms for computing these kinds of global illumination effects: finite element radiosity, and Monte Carlo irradiance calculations.

I have just been on the BMRT web site but the download button isn't working :o(

seems to be broken
try this one

it's nice that bmrt is free........but to use it you need mayaman and for this you have to pay.....
and it's not logical if they change the renderer only if big studios ask, because if they only make maya for big studios why did they lower the prices?

maya does include a translator to export scenes to renderman rib files
C:\AW\Maya4.0\docs\en_US\html\Translators\Translators.htm
another one that might help

here's an article from larry gritz talking about BMRT and GI
a hard to find one - their web presence definitely sucks

Maya 5 will have a all new render, made by alias themselves.

That sounds relly cool Sp7777.. But are you sure?
It's relly nice if it's true.
The render is the only thing that i don't like about Maya.

If Maya is going to be a "volume player" like they claim, it's going to have to have a more general and capable renderer like all the other software packages have around it's price range.

A/W does not only listen to the big guys. The big guys just seem to be the only ones that actually communicate with them for features they want. The problem is that most people just post on the boards and never actually email or talk to a/w asking for new features. Your paying for support then might as well use it. Same trouble with bugs. Yes it is a pain in the ass to call up a/w and send them files for fixing a problem you are having becasue you really need it fixed now and not next week. So alot of us just find a work around and never actually talk to a/w about the problem.
You can't just expect them to read your minds.
