Ok. Itís time to comment my work. I hope my english wonít be too badÖ ;) Any way, it will be a great practice!!! (think positive)

The first thing I did at the beginning of this project was to determine the function my creature would have to perform. After a while of thinking, Iíve made my mind on a human like creature who would have to hunt/fish in a kind of swamp for his tribe. Next, Iíve searched for informations on anything that concern hunt and swamp. I had more in mind something connected to the world of insect, instead of things concerning lion. Iíve quickly drawn on this page sketches of insects which I use as references. Iíve copied those from the movie ďMicrocosmos Ė Le Peuple de líHerbeĒ, documentary directed by Claude Nuridsany et Marie Perennou. Iím trying here to precise the main idea of the hunter (which can sound a little bit clichť and also over-used, doný,t you think:). In watching the movie, what has particularly interested me is an insect called in French ďpatineurĒ. This carnivorous insect has the ability to walk on the water. What I like most about it is its long legs, which have given me the idea of a waiting hunter placed at an high altitude. The image of the hunter is getting a little bit clearer.

Iím trying here to determine what kind of creature the hunter would have to hunt. This step is crucial because the abilities of this creature will determine, in a way, those of the hunter. So, Iíve decided that it will be an amphibian creature or maybe just a fish like creature. It will be also really fast, agile, dangerous, for those who disturb it, and should reflect a kind of intelligence (not just a dumb fish). I also wanted this creature to have an exotic look and to be 100% biologic. It is made of flesh, bones and shells. On his part, the human-hunter will be machine-flesh. The 4 sketches at the bottom have been copied on parts of photos taken on the internet. Iíve mainly searched for fossils and deep sea creatures.

Ok, thatís probably my final version of the hunter. The four legs maximise his stability and provide him with the capacity to stay a long time still, without losing balance or too much energy. The shape of the legs can be confound with the natural environment, which give him a good camouflage. The spine of the hunter is connected to an organic body (Star warsí ďYuuzan VongĒ style (read the ďNew Jedi orderĒ for more info)). Thereís a special mechanical weapon connected to its abdomen. Itís not working like a gun or anything throwing something. It has been created to suck mater and particules at very high speed and at a precise point. It doesnít need ammo and can be activated by the user very quickly (like a natural part of the body depending on reaction time). The cylinder of flesh and mater, taken on the target, is sucked by the weapon and pass threw the empty space at the centre of the weapon, without hurting him. The advantage of it is that this technology is a lot more powerful and resistant than any ammo. It is also lightweight compare to missile or rocket, and do a cleaner job (not spreading meat everywhere). It vacuum the hardest mater, whatever it is. The negative points are that it can only be fired in restricted angle and that it take long time for the energy to recharge. If it miss the creature, it gives it the opportunity to kill him.

The pose of the hunter, at the bottom, have been inspired by an anatomic drawing reproduction that was on my wall. I quite like the idea of the hunter taken his prey out of the water, providing his vulnerable backÖ I begin to have a scene in mind.

Iíve decided to create a composition that would be able to tell a story by itself. Thatís my goal! So, I have to decide how many characters and creatures would be necessary to understand a little bit better how they live. There will be 2 special hunters, one who will be taking his prey, the second defending the other. I also ask myself where will they put all their preys??? Iíve figured out that a transport or something will accompany them, providing supply and mechanical assistance, if necessary. Iíve try different layouts with all the characters, playing with their shape and their size, trying to make it work together. Iíve put here thumbnails of layouts Iíve made. The precision doesnít really matter for me at this point. I try to focus on the balance of the shapes, contrast and how the eye of the watcher will tend to move in it.

Iíve waited to put my previous research until I have done with this line art.
At this step, I use all I have done as references, and I try to make it all work together. Itís time for details! I try also to keep in mind the layout Iíve chosen before, thing Iíve learned to follow carefully (save time if itís respected). Iíve let myself opened for things that pop up during the execution of the drawing. I kind of like mistakes that work and are not foreseen. I use the line art as guide lines, so itís not necessary, to my opinion, to have the cleaner sketch in the world. But, itís certain that the more precise the line art is, the easier it will be to paint. For my part, the funniest part is on the computer. So the faster Iím done with it, the happier I am!

I can now attack the color! 17 days leftÖ Donít panic!!! ;)

Ok. I havenít really thought about the ambience that I would like to give to this piece. I always have difficulties when its time to choose a palette. Any suggestions or preferences??? I kind of prefer the blue one in the middleÖ Iíll sleep on it until week-end.

Welcome to the challenge, im glad i saw your work because i have to tell you its awesome, i really, really like it. Your sketches and concept ideas have a really great style a sense of development. Youve got some great reference sketches too, its great to see where youre ideas are originating.

Your line work for the composition is very interesting, it has a really dynamic feel, like a snap shot of a day in the life of these creatures.

As for your colour scheme i agree with your preference the blue version looks a lot more suitable. The creatures, based on your initial reference sketches are water based, and the blue aquatic feel of the images suits your idea very well. It looks almost like some sort of pond/river type of environment.

I love what you have created, well done, i will look forward to seeing more.   :bounce:

I have to agree with everyone else....great work

I think I would also opt for the blue version, though I like the golden hues coming through in parts of the third version.

really interesting to see all the planning involved and how different people approach creating a piece of work.

Ok. I can't really figure out for the moment what the final color will be, but I think the position of the lights and the shadows will do for the monent. I have added the underweater part at the bottom but... I like the idea, but I'm not sure yet if it works graphically. The curves and the fragmentaion it creates remind me of an aquarium... I'll see it later. Now, it's time for details!!!

So far so good. By your amount of pre-planning, I can tell already this is going to turn out pretty nice. I'll keep coming by to check on your progress, so I have something more useful to say.

At the same time, I would appreciate some solid criticism on my entry. (before it's too late!). And don't be afraid to bash the crap out it.

Since my last update, Iíve worked principally on the characters. I wanted to get the positions to feel real (who wouldnít want it for a realistic approach, anywayÖO_o) So, I used the best references I could getÖ i.e. myself!!! O_O The only problem using this trick is that you risk losing the shape of your original character. But for here, my skinny body has served me wellÖ ahumÖ So, Iíve painted the characters using these pictures of me playing the hunter with a dictionary. Also, during the week-end, Iíve added details on the background, and Iíve tried to redesign stuff that were quite foggy on the line art. There are things still weird in the image (unbalance stuff on the beast for exemple), but Iíll try to get through it later. For now, Iíll fix all the characters for Friday. I hopeÖ

Hello Kraull................very professional, indeed. It's nice to see the methodical approach. Ironing out any possible problems before you commit to your overall design. But we all know what it's like when you start....you can never be fully prepared for what 'doodle demon' is lurking about. You have an excellent approach....your mood pieces are lovely....you have a nice sketch style (good line quality)

It looks like this will be a very well thought out piece.

Good luck

So, this is the present state of my image. I've thought rapidly about a schedule for the next 5 days. If all goes well, I would like to have finished the details and characters for monday, and take the rest of the time for setting the color and contrast, and working on special effects (haven't think a lot about this part yet). I'm presently stucked on the hunter in the background... I'm quite not sure about the position. Well, I think I'm gonna cry... :)

kraull,

maybe you won't have much of a problem if you keep the hunter loose and sugestive as is. if this character is not the main machineflesh characater, then I say treat him as part of the background...

It's indeed some nice piece of art. great color scheme and sensibilities.

Bruno: Thanks for your comment for my character. Treat it like a background element is surely the best way to get, but I really want to try to practice my skill to represent characters in different positions.
