View Full Version : My Hair
manjoechan 05-30-2004, 04:23 PM Lately I've been trying to paint hair and I found it really hard. But i've finally come up eith some hair thats actualy bearable to look at. Im trying to go for a real look, but can't get that photorealistic style.

One of my biggest faults is that i paint very quickly and try and rush thorugh it and not putting enough precision and accuracy into where i'm painting.
Please give me any critics, but bare in mine that I'm a beginner!

Go look her 'fur' tut - works the same for hair I gather....
Try using smaller brushes maybe ? (for instance the end of each hair looks way too large)

Thanks for your opinion! I really appreciate it! That tutorial is quite helpful, one of my biggest faults is that i scribble! I must learn from my mistakes

fo some reason I couldn't open that link. I would say though, keep a thin brush size, use long even strokes (if you are going for long hair) and don't use full opacity and flow - build it up. I would guess to make realistic looking hair would take a looong time... I've never tried though.

After some practice, here are some more samples i drew. I still need to use thinner brushes, but i am getting there!

much better indeed - try doing it on some random face to see how it looks - and try doing some hilites (as if the hair was reflecting light)

yea it's getting better. Don't forget to use the "smudge" tool, you can't live without it when talking about hair. Also when you use it, turn the mode to "darken" to get rid of annoying light lines along the strokes. Use settings from 90%-99%

that's some really good hair ... I personally think you should try to get more structure/texture in it b/c right now it does look pretty flat/too smooth imho

Its a good tutorial that, looks like its paid off for you. I am going to have to practice that, although when you have it in such a large format, its alot harder. I am currently doing a painting in 3500 by 3800 (roughly).

Hey, thanks for all your feedback, i didnt expect so much.
I definately need to put more work into it, and like schmu_20mol said, i do need to make it have more texture to look less flat. And thank you Garma for your tip on the smudge tool.
I was wondering if anyone has a good tutorial to paint skin on the face, i am trying to do a whole head but i cant do it!

The "Dodge" and "Burn" tools are great for adding depth and hightlights to hair also. Play with them a bit. :-)
