View Full Version : WWII German Mecha
TedTerranova 05-29-2004, 05:37 AM I'm a huge fan of Japanese Mecha and while playing a WWII videogame called blitzkrieg I was thinking how cool it would be to see not only tanks on the battlefield, but also mecha. I also wanted to create a 3D version of all those cool WWII dioramas that you see, but with a sci-fi twist. Everything is pretty standard WWII except for the mech. It does borrow many pieces from the Tiger tank.
new image with changes.

nice shot dude, they look alittle too fake. maybe if you make them alittle more i dunno dirty looking. it would look real, i dont know what it is, maybe a lack of a bump map? very nice picture though you shoul definitely try to play the game ring of red, if you like mecha like the one uve modelled you'll definitely like ring of red it's based in post ww2 japan or europe i can't remember and the communists want to get the new mecha. great game , keep up the great work.

Awesome work, I like how you kept the style of the actual german armor, many details are similar to conventional weapons.
Great work!

Looks frontpage quality to me :) It needs something though... maybe a lighting change or something... Great job!
Inventive mech design :)

Wooow!
Very Nice Work! Front Page!!! :bounce:
Congrat!
Some weird new flavour you created here! The legs of the mech look very anime/manga and look kind of strange combining those with the old tank, other than that it is still a great picture.

Great design:bounce: :bounce: Nice modeling and texturing!!!
You could work more on lighting... The light is somewhat flat, you could use some dof or fog to make the scene more "deep". It looks like you have a sun light from the right casting some shadows, and a fill light from the top and this light is killing this image (look at the man on the top of the mecha) IMO.
A great work with a lot of imagination. :applause:

nice work. Problem with this piece is that it just doesn't have "it". I dunno, looks just a little bit too fake. HDRI would help.. The main problem is that the lighting doesn't match the photo exactly (which would be extremely different to do exactly right with all the trees and stuff.)
nice work nevertheless

I really like this image but I agree with the lighting. as :zepedro:
said look at the guy in the mecha. What plays around with my eyes is that the mecha seems to have a hard light on it while in return the guys in and around the mecha are very soft and a little blury.
again I really like the image and love the overall design.. Well done

I love this concept! I'm a big fan of German tank designs, and anime mecha. I've never seen the two combined together so seamlessly. The more I look at it the more I like it. I would love to see some orthographic views of this puppy (or a slightly larger render for my desktop perhaps ;) ). What's really cool to me is that I find it really sparks my imagination. I wonder how many variants could/would have been derived from something like this. Looks like you mounted a howizer as it's main armament. I can see it with the venerable 88, like the Tiger tanks, and maybe an anti-aircraft version with the quad flak cannons.
Everyone seems to be harping on the lighting, and while I see their, I wonder if you were shooting for it to look like a scale model diorama as opposed to a "real life" depiction. That's what it looks like to me.
I wish I could get my hands on this baby to animate. I'd kill to see it move! Great job!

(I edited the first post so that you can see the changes I've made without searching through all the posts)
Thanks for the feedback. Lighting is not my thing so I appreciate all the ideas. I've done the following things to help improve the image.
-increased the overall contrast
-unified all the shaders to get a more consistent rendering amongst all the items in the scene
-changed the renderer to Catmull to bring out the detail in the bump maps and models
-added some color to the light to give it more punch
The suggestions have really made the image more visually interesting and eye catching. Any more ideas would be really apprecited. I know this is a finished work forum, but I guess no image it really ever done especially if it can be made better.
In response to the mech design and stuff, I really wanted to combine the design details from a Tiger and other panzer tanks with mech legs like in a Dougram or Scopedog mech. I like these mechs, because they look like real military vehicles. I'm not a fan of the Gundam look, it just doesn't seem real (I hope no one takes offense).
It's so short because I wanted to give it as low a profile as possible. It's still too tall to work on a real battlefield, most mechs are. I also wanted it to look very stable. I'd like to do a walk cycle some time, but I'm really busy right now. I guess it's not so much a tank as maybe a self propelled artillery piece, or an infantry support vehicle.
Thanks again for all the feedback. :)

The design of the mech isn't my favourite, but I loved the pic, very cool.

I had one other thought I had wanted to mention which I remembered about 5 minutes after I had posted my comments...
I think the tow pintles mounted on the toes should be moved up onto either the upper part of the legs, or the lower edge of the main chassis. Where they are on the toes now would be fairly impractical, both for chaining the mech down for long range transport (they wouldn't stop it from toppling over), and for hauling a mired vehicle out of the mud. Two of the main uses for the pintles. I know this is getting pretty picky, but I wanted to mention it.
Cheers

Thanks again for all the feedback. gaffistick, I was also thinking of all the variants, like you said, an 88mm anti-air and anti-tank variant. Or a tank killer version, or quad 50 caliber machine guns. I just wanted to make a mech that didn't stand out from any other piece of military hardware because it looked functinal.
I did all the work in Max. The final lighting setup is just a skylight and a spotlight. The spot has a projector map on it. That is simply a black and white image of some leaf and tree shapes to give the illusion that the sun is shining through a tree canope. I also warmed up the lights to make the image look like a bright sunny day.
Some people asked for wires. There was a lot of work in this scene. I decided not to just make a mech and render it on a black background. I wanted to show the people who maintained it, loaded the ammo, and assigned it to it's mission. That meant making all the guys, their uniforms, the famo (german truck), and everything else. It is nice to see that all that work is appreciated. So here are a couple of wires. Please feel free to ask any questions or give more feedback. Thanks again for helping improve the image.

Although I don't get tired of good mech renders, its really nice to see one that is so original and well executed.
thanks for posting the wires

Excellent work on this image it has a great deal of attention to detail and as said before if very functional and convincing. I think the only thing that breaks this realism is the neat and tidy appearence of the objects and textures.
Its not distracting though and this still makes a great piece of artwork.

Execellent model!!! best i seen in weeks!!!
im a WW II vehicle lover myself, and i love to see you did a great job using details from actual vehicles of that time! :D
there is one thing that kinda bothers me though, and that is the position of the aa gun. its right behind the mount of the howitzer.
the gun's breach or how its called will be right underneath the aa gunners cupola.
oh, one more thing, but this really is a tiny one lol.
add one of those empty shell hatches, through which they eject the empty shells, lots of tanks had those in that time...
once again, EXCELLENT work!!! 5 stars from me. frontpage stuff thats for sure!! :applause:

The only thing that could make me happier with this is an animated movie version.
This is stupendous work, of course I'm a major mecha fan with a great love for "realistic" mechs, so you might have a slightly biased audience :) . But keep up the good work, I love it!

Thanks again for the new comments.
Josich -far trees are a photo I too of the woods near my workplace. The nearer trees are geometry. I simply took a photo of a few of the local trees up close. Then I flattened the images of the bark and then just mapped them to tubes, using the diffuse alaso as a bump. I did desaturate it and increase the contrast. If you check out the wire image you should be able to see where the geometry trees are. The photo background is on a plane with self illumination set to 100%.
Caman0 - good points. I can tell that you know your military vehicles. I made the image below so you could check out my design. It is a really small vehicle with only two crew, which is much smaller than the standard 4 man tank crew. I thought I could get away with making the loader also a MG42 close fire support gunner, although he doesn't really have much room :) The other crew member is the driver/commander and gunner. He wears a lot of hats, but this isn't a front line tank, more for fire support or artillery. I made the legs really strong and squat to take the cannon recoil.
redglass - I'm really busy at work right now, but I also want to see this beast walk. I'll make animating it my next priority. I'm also working on a Heavy Transport (http://www.terranovaart.com/images/3d/biped_transport.jpg) for these things. It's heavily influenced by the german gliders of WWII and some Miyazaki desings for Naussica.

thanx man, that rocks!

like the one you did on your site, the half track, but with a white bg? -Gonna use that as my desktop for the next few months!!-
thanx in advance
once again, great work man!

Opened this image up again. I messed around with a bloom effect. I'm not sure what I think. It's kinda cool, but makes the image a little soft, like a fairy tale. Any thoughts?
