- I like the image, it is laid out very nicely.
- Looks like a cross between an MR2 and a Camaro.
- Is the background CG?
- Can we see a larger render?

Hi
Well, the car is exactly the Toyota Volta by Italdesign: we worked with them to create a presentation video of this car for the Geneve Auto Salon. Basically the project consisted of the integration of CG cars (Toyota Volta and Alfa Visconti) over a live DV plate. Here is another example.

Maya&MR. More stuff to come ;)

great work!

It's interesting you used Maya and MentalRay. Got any tips about using Maya and MentalRay for this sort of stuff? Maybe even some settings? (one can hope...;) )

it is absolutely amazing and superb. and yes, how how how did you do this on mental ray and maya. tips would be greatly appreciated.
oh, why did you guys use a cg car? wouldnt it be easier to just shot the real thing? of course i dont know how the ad goes, so perhaps its doing something amazing???
anyway great job mate!! wicked stuff

No disrespect, but I'm surprised that pic got plugged. It's nice, but not great imho.

I really don't see why you had to post a 20 k jpg, if you went through the trouble of creating the image itself, an additional three minutes of getting some free webspace wouldn't be too much trouble?

[/whine]

The falloff on the right side seems a bit overdone. Perhaps it's the pinkish tint, or the contrast, but it seems to stick out a bit too much atm.

Keep it up, would like to see this in at least 1024 x 768 :)

I'm gettin new to 3d as well, and my big question is what exactly do rendering programs do? Doesnt 3DS Max render your image itself? Obviously a big newb when it comes to this, help please!

I really like your car, especially the second pic where it shows the reflection being seperated and refracted between the hood and the glass. Love it!

The environments look great, and the paint shader is pretty cool. What could use some help is the car 3D model, but you didn't make those models. What you did do is amazing!

P.S. I really want that video!

---

I visted your side, clocked "DOWNLOAD", clicked "VIDEO", clicked "5 MINUTE".

I also tried the 3 mintue video, and also one of the wallpapers (2nd one, 1024x768).

Initially it appears that your gallery isn't working...you may want to add a loading bar.

Hi
First of all, thank you for the positive comments.
I am attaching now a couple of wireframes of the Toyota, plus one showing the dummy models we used to make the animating process easier:

http://www.edenlab.com/ginevra/wireframe_toyota_01.jpg

http://www.edenlab.com/ginevra/wireframe_toyota_02.jpg

http://www.edenlab.com/ginevra/wireframe_dummies_01.jpg

About the first picture, I must precise that it's a touched-up version of a frame of the animation, and this is why its look is quite unusual. The second one is a frame straight out of the video.

And now, a couple more frames: one is an image of a truck we had to create in 3D and composite over a real truck; the other one is a picture containing the Toyota Volta and the Alfa Visconti at the same time.

Sorry about the website: it's just a temporary thing we made. The 'real' one coming soon...

Cheers

I like the car but I don't want to know what the replacement windshield will run. I don't know if they are really going to go into production. Maybe it will be 2 peices of glass in the end. I am happy now with my Prius. :)

I hope toyota has more and more cool hybrid cars in developement. I personally with the Scion C would have been a hybrid. It looks pretty cool but get 25-30 mpg. No thanks.

Oh yeah... comments about the 3D. It looks great, just like the photo's I have seen on the toyota sight. I imaging Toyota paid well too :) Their web-division pays really well.

cheers and good luck in the future

Hi
Yes, some of the shots have been realized around in Turin; some others have been taken in the mountains around the city and in the Balocco race track.

Most of the tracking has been done in Maya Live with some hand fixes around.

The average time to get a frame in PAL format from MR was around 10 minutes. Thanks to Horvatt Szabolcs, Andrew Cammarano and others (you know who you are ;) ) for helping us solve the technical problems we faced during the production.

There are 3 people in the front seat of the Toyota because that is how the car is designed to be ;) In fact the steering wheel has not a fixed place and can be moved from the left to the right seats and back in order to fit into different driving positions.

And now, a few more shots:

http://www.edenlab.com/ginevra/screenshot_alfa_toyota_04.jpg

http://www.edenlab.com/ginevra/wallpaper_alfa_toyota_01.jpg

As many of you have pointed out, the cars look often sharper than the background: well, the fact is that the quality of the live DV footage wasn't exactly excellent, and this forced us already to lower a lot the quality of our renders in post... we weren't feeling like downgrading them even more than what you can see :) Well, in the video the difference is not that visible in any case...

cheers

Hi
What we have now are some images out of a virtual set used to show the cars inside a neutral environment, and to show some different paint solutions as well.

wow these have got to be some of the most clean images i have seen in a long time. great smooth and clean reflectiveness.

the only thing i suggest is that everything behinde the cars in the action shorts looks too dead, maybe add someone walking or something to liven up the set.
