i was wondering if i have a complex hierarchy of objects for my car and have already assigned a correct texture tag to all of them, how can i render the whole model in gray without deleting all the texture tags one-by-one? i tried placing the entire model unget one NULL and assigning the gray texture to that, but it woun't work for the sub-objects. any suggestions?

Paul Everett's plugin 10comm tools have this feature, called Flush Materials. It will temporarily replace all your texture tags with a default gray material. Very useful for those quick renders when all you wanna do is check say lighting.

Put the gray texture at the very last position in your object. That should do the trick.

There is also a small plugin called GhosterTag, part of Jennav2
www.cidertank.com

JENNA is quite an awesome plugin suite in any case.
download the demo, Ghoster Tag can be used without needing a key ( as freebie from Darf). I use it all the time to Ghost tags- Give it a shortcut or pin it in your layout. - Just select all material tags ( best with the popup select tool) - and ghost. real Fast

BTw. , on a somewhat related note10 Comm from Paul Everett has an awesome little plugin called quick hide, hwich I could ont live without, to quickly isolate an object.

I am not sure what you are trying to do but another option you may want to look at is to render using the multipass option to seperate the layers. A couple of the layers are flat grey, or is it white?, and look pretty cool. Worth trying just for fun in any case. Cheers.

Simple - delete all your materials - render then undo and get your materials back!

Select the parent objects material tag and choose "Select identical Child tags" from the context menu. THen drag the new material in the Material link field in the Attribute Manager. If you have more then 1000 objects make sure to adjust the maximum number of multiselected objects for the AM in the preferences.

How about unchecking the textures box in the rendering options? Doesn't this do the same thing? It's what I use for quick tests.

Except that your only removes the material while mine lets you replace it ;)

Nope, the materials will be used, only the textures (bitmaps) will be left out.

Dunno. It ought to be a one button option in render prefs. It strikes me as a very bizarre oversight to not have such a thing.
