View Full Version : How to make a landed tyre look natural?
battery555 05-27-2004, 02:41 PM Ok, i'm pretty sucks at animation. i was asked to make a simple animation showing a car moving but here is the challenge, it need to look real.
i went through the tutorial from the book Lightwave applied 6.5/7 and figured how is being done for the moving the car. the only thing that the tut did not cover is the tyre on the ground is not weighted or deform. in real world, due to gravity there should be some deformation at the bottom of the rubber tyre when meeting the ground. anyone care to share how this can be achieved? :(
many thanks in advance :)

If you want your tyre to look natural - avoid Silicon. Saline looks much more natural.;)

No, but seriously, what version of LW are you using? If you have LW 8, then it's your lucky day - there is a scene file of a tire bulge using the improved soft body dynamics.

If you have LW 7.5, I have seen a tutorial using a radial array of bones to create the bulge. Someone may know what tutorial I'm talking about. :)

Hi,
If you are using LW7.5 there is a tire squash example done with displacement from Splinegod.
Download here (http://www.splinegod.com/rigs.htm) .

"Tyre" is english from Great Britain. In the U.S. we would spell it "Tire". And if you're in the deep South where I am you would pronounce it "Tar". :)

Thanks Robsi, and thanks to all helpful wavers! will check out Larry's sample files, hope there will be some success.
Right, when i got enough cash i'll get LW8, for now i hv to live with my 7.5c :(
In this part of the world we follow the british standards but too much influence of american movies grotesque the way we use english :)

just check out Larry's sample files, pretty neat way of using null as a target to deform the 'tyre' :) hope i figured that right. i felt that the bulging part is excellent, but just that the wheel start to go out of shape when rotating. is there a way to correct that? or is there a better work around? i read the manual about motion designer but could'nt figure how that can be applied to this project of mine. appreciate if anyone can enlighten me
just want thank Larry for the sample file that made freely available.
