View Full Version : Please help: how to model and animate tank treads
Stanislav 07-18-2002, 12:10 PM Hi everyone,
My first post on this site. I'm a newby in 3-D, so I'm sorry if my question is silly. I'm modeling a tank for class final project. Everything worked fine until I got to treads. The tank will be animated (10 seconds) so the tread should also be animated. Does anyone have any idea what would be the easiest and most efficient way to model and animate treads? I would appreciate any input.

i start wondering why we should pay for alias support :)
ahh well.. i remember why: they can tell you if it is a bug they already have in the list =)

here at our university we have a very good realtionship and contact to the aw support. i guess i have to say a big thank you AW (if someone from them read this :) )
once i've needed a copy of unlimted for a maya live project i was doin and called them at 5p.m. . and no joke, next day at 9a.m. i had a package from aw with the unlimited coming with express.
so it's not bad at all :)
p.s. it wasn't the only time i called them for sponsoring and everytime i got what i've wanted.
Big Hug AW

ok.. maybe my last post gives a bit a bad touch on the support.
honestly those guys and girls there are very friendly and i was even having some private chat with some.
concerning problems they helped me a lot and some ideas they had were just brilliant.
but in a lot of cases they only were able to tell me, that this is a bug :)
so.. keep up good work :)
btw. my dealer told me that the european support center was closed and the workers shifted to canada.. and to be able to do the european support they have to get up at 3a.m... poor dudes :(

alexx, that's cool that they had private chat with you. i don't think i'm that far into cg to even need these guys yet. i'm still trying to figure out how to use bump maps and such
btw, any suggestions of texturing? i have to texture this tank eventually. i don't like it clean and cg looking, it's got to have some rough spots and some bullet zings. maybe anyone knows a good texturing book or site?
To me, UV mapping was something I had to find out myself, I don't know why it seemed so weird and confusing when reading all those tutorials, and I just couldn't understand it. Nowadays it's very simple, but it took a bit to understand it.
So I'd suggest you to go to www.highend3d.com and find some tutorials about UV's, and then do them, when you understand how they actually work (It's über-simple) making proper UV maps seems very easy.
