The researchers from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and Geneva-based CERN
transferred data across nearly 11,000 kilometers at an average speed of 6.25 gigabits per second.

To quote the article: 'Home users likely won't need this type of bandwidth anytime soon .' - don't need it but WANT it! Imagine downloading a dvd in a second, woohoo!

nitpick mode ON,
8bits make a byte. So 6.25 gigabits /second would translate roughly to 0.78 gigabytes /second.
It's very fast indeed, don't get me wrong but it will take approximately 8 seconds to download a 6.3GB DVD. Very rough these figures mind you, but still...
nitpick mode OFF
enjoy...

What are they smocking? Of course home users need this, Sony and all other game console makers would love to distribute games through the net. How many people are unable to play X game because it is not available close to where they live? Add to that the reduced shipping cost and CD/DVD production cost.

Pffffftt..
That 6.25Gbit internet doesn't come close to my 256k dsl.. oh.. wait.. , gah NZ connections are crap.

LOL I remember when most home users had a 386 ... computer magazines would say ..."no home user would ever need more than a 100 meg hard drive and speed over the upcoming 486" man how time and progress changes things.

great, so when someone hacks your computer, not only will they be getting your keystrokes, but EVERYTHING ELSE on your hard drive.

C,
I have to wait 8 seconds? Pahh, screw that, I have a better use for 8 seconds than waiting for a DVD to download

Yeah, but now they've made stable Flash drives that are as big as a standard hard drive....
They only cost one or two first born children, and you have to get them through the military or have really good connections...
Sorry, I can't find a link to back it up, but rumor has it they have a stable flash HD.... Windows takes an entire 3 seconds to completly load.

I saw em at Siggraph last year.......they weren't near as big as reg HD's but they are damn fast, and damn expensive.

So in the near-ish future we will be able to turn on, log on and watch a movie in under 20 seconds (even with my bit/byte confusion  )
DREEEEEAM!
On a more serious note, imagine how this would affect working practice? Everyone could work from home without any annoying waiting for large attachments, and we could share animations etc in a flash. Until the hackers bring the entire thing to a grinding halt of course :D

By the time can transfer such huge files our 3D scenes will have crazy new rendering thingies to make it super realistic + AI and whatnot, so it will still be too big.

The human genome is like 3.5Gb isn't it? That'd take a while on Jetstream...
(Can you imagine that? 3.5Gb inside each cell in our bodies  And people say there's no God!)

Either that, or God doesn't have winzip!
I'm sick of leaving my house. I want this internet 2 NOW! I'll never have to talk to anyone again. Just me and my computer...
Seriously though, this will change the way alot of things are done. Forget buying media at the store. In 5-10 years kids will be asking us what all these dusty old 'DVD thingys' are. Everything that can, will exist on a hard drive. Combine this with high-resolution e-paper and terahertz processors and flash hard drives!!!! WOOHOO!!!
I'm already to the point where I think my high-speed net connection is slow just because I have to 1 minute to watch a trailer. Just 3 years ago I thought it was all I'd ever need.

it looks lovely doesnt it, imagine the price tag on this beasty cable.. its nuts!, not a chance that being in australia that we'd be able to use this kind of technology with international connections, but geez lol :)
maybe the kiddies who went after cgtalk should've gone after this baby :P

portion of CNN Transcript from the 1990s:
BLITZER: I want to get to some of the substance of domestic and international issues in a minute, but let's just wrap up a little bit of the politics right now.
Why should Democrats, looking at the Democratic nomination process, support you instead of Bill Bradley, a friend of yours, a former colleague in the Senate? What do you have to bring to this that he doesn't necessarily bring to this process?
GORE: Well, I will be offering -- I'll be offering my vision when my campaign begins. And it will be comprehensive and sweeping. And I hope that it will be compelling enough to draw people toward it. I feel that it will be.
But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I've traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.

Yep Al Gore is a moron, but still. Internet2 shouldnt be as vunerable to hackers and such being that they didnt base it on legacy technology. The problem with the current internet is that we have legacy and thats what the hackers use most of the time. other than MSholes of course :). By the time we get Internet2 that speed will seem rather slow I bet you. I am running 1500K right now and back not to long ago i had 56K I really think that as connection get faster and HD's get bigger internet2 wont seem as special. On a side note how long will it take to get internet2 into my home in Nebraska. an EXTREMELY long time. Ehh maybe I can use social security money to pay for it then.:)

Good point. The majority of people out there are still using really slow modems.
Also dont you think if music, movies, video games and software are an easy click away on the internet2, that record companies and movie studios will do everything in their power to stop it?
I am already seeing commericals in front of movies telling me not to steal movies on the internet. The movement is gonna getbigger. Its gonna be interesting to see if and what the big shot execs are going to do to stop it.

While I don't think his internet comment was accurate or well-conceived, I don't think you can place him in the moron category.
He's on a very different tier than Dan Quayle.

I can imagine it now.
First we'll have the internet similar to the one in Johnny Mnemonic. Where we carry around (gasp) 180g implant in our brain. We can directly hook up to the net with niffty graphics.
Five years down the line. The potential is fully realized. The real world will be replicated in as we would call it "the matrix" Soon we will be consistantly jacked into our fantasy worlds, ones we create. or even online community.
That would be awesome. So...What world would you be in? I'll see ya in the cyberworld of Masamune Shirow.

people at M.I.T. developed the internet. Screw Al Gore. Times ahead of us are getting crazy. Imagine, 1GB transfer a second (that's my guess), in the next 10 yrs. Next comes internet police and the gub-ment.

people at M.I.T. developed the internet. figuring such things out is like figuring who created God in the first place...
I thought it was the US Army that first invented telephone data transfers.
Aaaanyways. I'll buy a huge HD and download the internet then :buttrock: teehee...
This would actually mean more work for internet hiqi video creators - more job for the industry :bounce: .. Well - let's wait a few years (20 or so ?) and see what happens.
