View Full Version : Plugin: Ornatrix- Hair for everyone
Marsel Khadiyev 05-26-2004, 03:34 AM Greetings Max users. After a while I have finally decided to make a release of Ornatrix Basic.
As you have read in the topic, it is a hair plugin for Max, and it is free for anyone as long as its used for non-profit reasons.
Please keep in mind that the plugin is Beta and shouldn't not be taken as a stable version. This isn't the final shape or form of Ornatrix, and could be considered as a proof of concept.
Here are some images from the alpha tests:
http://www.ibmr.net/Ornatrix/gallery/3_small.jpg (http://www.ibmr.net/Ornatrix/gallery/3.jpg)http://www.ibmr.net/Ornatrix/gallery/5_small.jpg (http://www.ibmr.net/Ornatrix/gallery/5.jpg)http://www.ibmr.net/Ornatrix/tutorials/channels/fin_small.jpg (http://www.ibmr.net/Ornatrix/tutorials/channels/bh_76.jpg)
More images can be found on the site (see below).
Some of the features so far include:
- Combing, brushing, painting, cutting etc. of hair
- Real-time dynamics preview
- Both volumetric (voxel-based) and post-effect (scan conversion based) rendering
- Volumetric shadows
- Real-time render preview
- and many more
Ornatrix is *partially* supported under VRay, MR, FinalRender, and Brazil. Its rendering engine was built for scanline and thus would behave the best under it.
Anyway, check out the site for tutorials, forum, and download:

Thanks guys :)
This is just sort of 'testing out' release. The plans that I have for advanced versions of the plugin are somewhat abstract, and I need to test out my base algorithms meanwhile.
I'll try to compile a Max 5 version today (Max5 doesn't like me a lot for some reason).

Ornatrix means "hairdresser" in latin. To be more sprecise, it means "female slave hairdresser" ;)

how easy is the hair animated, can the hair be calculated like reactors softbodies, or a flex mod.
Or do u need to keyframe certain things ?

Very nice Marsel. I can't wait to give it a try.
Marsel Khadiyev
05-26-2004, 01:41 PM
Wardile: Animation aspect right now is Ox's weakest link. There is a built-in dynamics engine, but I am not very happy with it.
It is certainly not aimed towards production yet, but it does do skin-driven reaction.
You can also add any of Max's spacewarps as external forces. There's a collision detection and response system, where you can add any external objects as well as the distribution mesh, but its pretty much using a brute-force approach for collisions right now and thus can be very slow.
Future plans do include things like IK hair control, linking hair to any deformable object (like clothsim) and so on, but before that there are millions of other things that need to be straightened out.

one step at a time.
I was just curious.
Another question... can u use mesher to create a mesh out of the hair, does max see it as a particle system ?
Marsel Khadiyev
05-26-2004, 01:46 PM
You can export hair to spline, and the just make mesh out of that.
You can also as easily import it back (so you can import hair made for shag, for example).

Will be possible to transform the hair in some geometry with dynamics like shag do???and create someting like feathers or grass or other type of fur, hair??
thanks :)!

hell ya, all those images of your free hair tool look brilliant to me! So i tried the max5 release version.. but it seems to be a little bit buggy to me. Hehe, okay its just the beta ^^
I worked out your first tutorial... but everytime i tried to render my max crashed.. and i didnt get a hair preview.. this field remains black?

OX is obviously addictive.
Since I started using it, I always think about hair modeling.
As you all max users know.. Hair has been one of the things max lacks. We all hunger for hair.

If descreet would be smart then they would just hire you to do this plugin and then put it into the next max version. So easy to use :buttrock:
also they should throw out character studio and replace it with CAT, but thats another discussion :)

Ya, that would be GREAT!
Instead of having the developer on this forum, discussing various features and plans for the future, you'd get - well, NO info from discreet!
Instead of Marsel taking an idea you offer and saying "Great idea, I'll try that" or "Maybe, but we'll wait and see", discreet would say - well, NOTHING!
Instead of seeing a new alpha/beta version posted every 2-4 weeks for everyone to test, you'd get a version when you bought max and THEN get to test it!
And when a bug is reported: instead of seeing a patch go up a few days later, you'd get to wait until either a full X.1 app patch was released... or a new version of max was released.... assuming discreet to actually decided to fix it. ;)
Ya, sounds like a great idea for discreet to get involved and incorporate this nice new plugin. ;)

Usually when discreet incorporate a plug-in into next version of max, they do good testing of it first. And in my own experience I've not seen max crashes because of the new incorporated plug-in.
Here are 4 plug-ins recently put into max from r4-r6 and they all worked fine for me:
1. MultiRes
2. Reactor
3. MeshTools script.
4. Mental Ray
thorn3d
05-28-2004, 04:44 PM
Meshtools wasn't purchased and integrated into max5. Discreet created the code from scratch - according to a post written by Bobo, i believe. The toolset is similar but not the same codebase.
Just giving credit where's it's due. :)

The video walkthru u put up, well, it may be me, but i simply couldn't see nuttin due to poor resolution.
One thing: when u ppl talk about hair preview r u talkin bout viewport preview?
But don't get me wrong, please; i'm NOT complaining here, just pointing some things.

Nice plugin. Really. (I also have absolutely no freakin' idea why Max doesn't has a built in hair plugin in the first place)
By the way...I noticed some problems:
It's going out of memory very fast... I have 512 RAM and about 3 giga virtual. Still, when I increased the dense count, I've got a message: out of memory.
I've seen in the tuorials that there are other possibilities to make dense hair, vithout a big dense hair count, but I am still figuring out...
But in the end is very stable, fast, and everything one ever want.
Thank you.
Marsel Khadiyev

Thank you guys for all your unconditional support. The strange thing seems to be for people it is either very stable, or unstable (stable being the majority).
Most of the times files sent to me work perfectly on my machine, and I cannot figure out what the errors are. However, it is only a matter of time until all bugs are ironed out.
meanwhile I would really appreciate it if you guys sent me any files that crash on you, so I can hope to reproduce these crashes.
The memory problem has been there from the beginning. It will be fixed eventually (I'l still figuring out the best way around it). The problem is caused by the fact that Ornatrix is converting the dense hair into voxels, and they can take up a lot of space.
Meanwhile you can try substituting the volumetric renderer with an effect, which shouldn't give too much different results (in fact aside from volumetric attenuation and some clipping), effect render should produce almost identical results, without occupying a lot of memory.
Supporting external renderers is on the list of things to do, time solves everything. There is a lot of progress already and I hope to keep it up and try to satisfy all your needs in a hair plugin.
Just like with SceneManager, and SME, it is user-end opinions that count (after all thats who the plugin is targeted at) and I try to stick by that idea.
Keep posting and I'm sure Max can have a superb hair system (or systems, with hairFX coming out) in the end.

Marsel, i tested it and i must conclude it's not so stable on my machine. Lots of crashes (for no reason) The "out of memory" problem happens to me all the time, even when i didn't change anything in my settings. I just hit render for the third time, and i get an out of memory. In a few occasions hitting the update button helped, but most of the time it didn't. When i do hit the update button however, all my work in the hair brush section gets deleted. Is there a way to save an initial state or something? That would be really helpfull. And i can't seem to in- or decrease the amount of strands in my viewport for some reason (Probably some option i overlooked?) Don't get me wrong though, this sounds a bit negative, but when it works, it's just a killer app and the renders just look very promising. I just thought you would appreciate the feedback, so here is my 2 cents.
Edit: just found out what you meant by using the effect renderer, that seems to help (Also seems to be much faster)

Thanks for the FAQ update, Marsel. The problem was that i used the environment render. Environment render bad, effect render good!!! One more question though, when i use a standard primitive, and add ornatrix it works just fine. However, when i do my own poymodeling (f.i. a plane, turn to Epoly, extrude the edges, CS make poly, add a tesselate, etc) it crashes as soon as i pick it as a ditribution object, click on uniform hair generation and click on update. I can send you a file when this occurs if you want.

Martijn, if you're a Max 5 user (especially), never forget to add UVW coords (spherical) to your mesh before updating with Ornatrix. So far lack of proper UV's has been the only cause for all update-related crashes.

This thing is horrible. Everytime I try to render a scene it makes an error and fails to recover the file and exits.
I'm going to assume that you don't program yourself at all. Beta software has bugs, this is the nature of how things work. As Song said, try to be constructive and report bugs with understandable steps. Telling Marcel that his hard and FREE work is horrible doesn't help and certainly doesn't give you any creadibility at all.
Marsel Khadiyev
07-14-2004, 02:25 PM
Crashoran, thanks for posting :) I realize the software is buggy, but if you read in the release notes its not aimed to be stable. In fact the whole purpose of the release is to test out how well certain algorithms work.
I am learning alot about the nature of current bugs and will do my best to iron them out. I have also noticed that if Ox is used properly, it can be very stable. We just don't have the help files to instruct the proper usage (yet).
Marsel
Marsel is right. I've been playing with ornatrix for a while now and I've realized that if I try to do something out of the ordinary workflow, I get errors. But if I use it properly, ornatrix works very smoothly.
