Hey guys! how about a thread like "post your daily sketches you never posted"?

I sometimes start on a daily topic but for some "reason" it never gets posted

most it's all about time but some just never turned out they way I thought it would be hehe...

but I keep them lying around on my drive and sometimes I open them up and get my self a good laugh

maybe it's just me!? or anyone else keeps stuff like this?

As above, but instead of just doing the person, we should focus on a specific story surrounding the person to avoid having just portraits of the guy or something. Narrative pics are so much more fun to work on and having a story keeps you on the straight & narrow!

As above, but instead of just doing the person, we should focus on a specific story surrounding the person to avoid having just portraits of the guy or something. Narrative pics are so much more fun to work on and having a story keeps you on the straight & narrow!

as some characters have rather the whole book than merely a scene attached to their remembrance here is a changed and replenished list with scene suggestions:

Adam/Eve (Eve seduces Adam to take a bite)
OR
Adam/Eve (disposession of Eden)
Cain/Abel (murder among brothers - just go for it!)
Lot/Daughters (they seduced him)
Judith/Holofernes (she beheads him after having seduced him)
Solomon/Queen of Saba (he seduces her)
David/Bathseba (he watches her from his palace bathing on her roof)
Jacob wrestling the Angel!(he's fighting the angel to receive a blessing... it worked out, might be a better method than praying after all...:D )
Moses/Pharao ("Let my people go!")
OR
Moses/Pharao("This is my last warning, mate!")
Joshua stops the Sun! (while fighting a battle at the city of gibeon)

Robinson Crusoe (discovering he's not alone on the island)
Lady Macbeth (washing invisible blood off her hands in delirium)
Puck (Midsummer Night's Dream - on discovering he accidentially swapped love potions)
Dorian Gray (the picture of... it just lends itself for a portrait)
Willy Loman (Death of a Salesman - "Don't mend your stockings!")
Morgaine (Mists of Avalon - summoning the mists)
Julius Caesar ("Et tu Brute?!" he discovers his close friend among the traitors and surrenders)
Dr. Faust (summoning Mephistopheles [the devil])
Porthos, Aramis, Athos, D'Artagnan (witnessing the decapitation of mylady)
OR
Porthos, Aramis, Athos, D'Artagnan (merrily having breakfast in a fort in the midst of battle and siege of La Rochelle)
Captain Nemo (frantically chasing the enemy's ship)
Don Quijote / Sancho Pansa (windmills.... [yawn])
OR
Don Quijote / Sancho Pansa (they take off their clothes and run around naked in the fields)
OR
Don Quijote / Sancho Pansa (don Quijote is sick after swallowing his self-fabricated medicine)

Hey, where's my "Neighbor of the Beast"? I don't think many people realize that it was the neighbor that drove the Beast insane. The neighbor's name was Jeffrey, which as you all know is the darkest name of evil throughout all time. One day the Beast was tending to his garden when a rental truck showed up and, well, out stepped Jeffrey.

But noooo, forget about the story. Go back to drawing "Elevator Races" or something like that.

What this is is we take an older work of ours, it can be a sketch, and finished picture, whatever, and we repaint it as a sketch. We are always constantly improving, and I think it would be really fun to see how what we have learned could improve our previous pictures.

I suppose we should have a somewhat long time limit for this one, like 45 minutes or something.

I've set different timelimits (15/20/25 etc minutes). So all I have to do is press start and start sketching.
And you can press the stop button to pause if you have to go to the toilet or something. Very convenient :)

Feel free to relocate this post to where it's more suitable, ROR... sorry I didn't know where to post :)

This isn't a topic suggestion, but I don't see any "rules" suggestion thread, so....

As a beginner to CG, I would really like to see people posting what brushes/art sets they use in their quick sketch. (If custom, that's okay, just say custom; no need to go into detail there.) I'm sure I'm not the only one who would benefit from having a sense of what can be achieved, not just with a given program, but with particular tools within it.

I agree with Sylanya, & Synnth as well. I think that doing speedpaints are definitely healthy, and very good practice, but when you're given a specific topic and have 30 minutes to paint something, the quality of the work isn't going to be that great. Plain & Simple. Why not have the daily sketches actually last, for I don't know, a day? It'll give people enough time to think of what they want to do, and I think the quality of work will go way up. If you want to put a time limit on it make it two hours or something of the sort. The quality of work would still skyrocket and people who don't have all the time in the world could still do 20 minute sketches, but allow for those people who want/require more time to get a chance to submit something they don't feel ashamed of.

pactum
04-14-2006, 02:50 AM
I agree that the time constraints are a bit too extreme, but I don't think an all-day, or even two hour limit is going to encourage participation. (Heh. Maybe we should just limit the time allowed to award-winners!) :D

I wonder if it would be simpler if every day's sketch had an hour limit? That gives a bit more time for development, and it's less confusing than having a different time limit every day.

I dunno. Just thinking out loud.

Edit: perhaps the problem here is that there's nothing "in between." As far as I can tell, we have the quick daily sketches, or we have major commitments. I wonder what would happen if we had a "weekly sketch group," so that there would be enough allowance for development without getting carried away. I suppose it would be hard to get participants, though.

Google Earth Sketch:

download google earth, it's free and mac/pc: http://earth.google.com/downloads.html

Then, fly all over the world, take a screenshot of a composition that you like, and make it the basis for a sketch. Then post your sketch alongside your screenshot. I turned the terrain elevation all the way up in the options to get more height. I think this could be a fun new way to generate compositions. Here is a screenshot of a place I've never seen before via randomly flying around to northern italy: http://forums.cgsociety.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=94286&stc=1

Once you have it, if you download and open this file, it shows many of the filming locations in New Zealand from Lord of the Rings. You could fly around and do your own composition.

"Illustrate this Poem"

To see a world in a grain of sand,
and a heaven in a wildflower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
and eternity in a hour.
-William Blake

Ever since I heard that in the Tomb Raider movie I sort of fell in love with William Blake's poems. Good work, he has.

I had a couple of ideas for actual stylistic topics, rather than concept topics--

'Palette Day'- put up a color table (.ACT) and eveyone uses that to paint their picture (whatever the day's topic might be.)

'Style Day'- do a piece in the style of your favorite CGTalker.

'Brush Day'- choose ONE brush from both Painter and Photoshop. The whole piece must be done with that one brush.

'Textures Day'- every object in the painting must have a texture applied!

These are just ideas for styles that you could use in addition to a topic.

I think it would be cool to do a 2-part sketch topic of concept design. We may even be able to do it with Dune.

Day 1: take a topic, it may be character, vehicle, environment, whatever... And do a series of ROUGH sketches at 15-20 minutes time limit for each. These should probably be pencil, or rough blocked in silouettes. For good examples of this see "the skillfull huntsman" concept art book. (NO RENDERED SKETCHES 15 - 20 minutes only for each sketch)

Day 2: Do a final design rendering of your topic based on the feedback you recieved from your rough. It will be the job of the community to sign on and give crits on what they liked about some roughs and didnt like about others. So with their feedback decide on a final design that you think will please the greatest audience.

Might be a fun exercise. It will deffinetly require a lot of participation.

I'm up for that one CodeNothing...would be a great project and I might end up with something decent :D I always have trouble returning to 'do up' sketches and in fact rarely attempt it. With community participation there'd be some motivation. Plus I'd love to try out a bit of concept design...

oh how about we draw the days of the weeks as people.

i'm getting the idea from garth nix's book series "Keys to the kingdom" where each day is personafied by a character with that name.

He created, Mr. monday, Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wendsday, Sir Thursday, Lady Friday, Superior Saturday, Lord Sunday.

But i think it would be a neat idea to make our own s-m-t-w-r-f-s
