Goro - please elaborate on 2 of these: in the Animation battle is the battle among the sketchers, or do you mean to animate a battle scene -and- what do you mean by "Blind Sketch"? Sketch without looking?

12-02-2004, 07:42 PM
gif animation was just an idea. Since we had already some of those :)

The blind sketch idea is exactly what you are thinking
Sketching without looking. I used to do it with pen and paper once.
The results are hilarious. But it doesn't mean that you have to draw everything
bilnd....I thoght you could do lineart blind and then color it for example....think
there are many ways

Sketching without looking. I used to do it with pen and paper once.
The results are hilarious.

I read somewhere that that is extremely good for your ability to "see", e.g. to listen to the perceptions and not to what your brain tells you what it should be.

drawing the curves and creases from the palm of your hand works good too

i'm in for this one.

What's that blue thing doing here?
Great bloopers in history.

Do you smell something?

Ummm... I guess that's it for now.

12-02-2004, 09:55 PM
gif animation was just an idea. Since we had already some of those Its not a bad idea...I like it. Its been a very long time since I've done it tho. But its a good thing to keep current on how to do it.

We used to do contour drawings as a blind sketch in school. Mine would usually turn out pretty much ok except I usually gave people's bodies little bitty pinheads! :applause:

"Does this taste funny to you?"
"Don't eat that, its past the expiration date!"

- hey now everybody!
- leave me alone
- i hear the wind blow
- come on and wreck my car
- everything is catching on fire!
- i found a new friend underneath my pillow
- who's that standing out the window
- all alone
- what's that blue thing, doing here?
- something grabbed ahold of my hand, and that's when all my troubles began
- i don't understand you
- please pass the milk please
- i heard a sound, and i turned around to find the thing that made the sound
- mysetrious whisper
- the day love came to play
- i'm having a heartattack
- who's knocking on the wall?
- i walk along darkened corridors

There is a guy I work with, I won't mention his name but, Kenny likes to sketch at work. Everybody thinks that he's pretty good and asks him for requests. So, one day Kenny asked me what I would like him to draw. I thought for a moment and replied, can you draw flies? He answered yes, I can draw flies. Ok I said, can you draw fire and can you draw a conclusion also, can you draw public interest? By this time he realized that I was kidding.

But seriously, my suggestion for a daily sketch theme;
Draw a Flying Leap
try to be extreamly creative in thought and design and think out side the box on this one.

Has anybody seen the movie Donny Darko? The scene in the psychiatrist office, there is a picture on the wall in the background in which caught my attention. It was a painting of a persons head/face done in extreme contrast. It looked to be done in shades black, brown, yellow, and white, I fell in love with the painting as soon as I saw it.

Maybe as a daily topic we could do contrast, open subject, any extreme mild to outragous, black & white or color.

Freedraw! Sketch whatever you want. (Similar to the speed sketch thread, but it would give the DSG a chance to have a go.)

Also I think it would be a good idea to get everyone on one day to sketch using the SAME medium ie. a single brush in Photoshop/Painter. That way we can learn from each other's drawing technique.

"A French term literally meaning "trick the eye." Sometimes called illusionism, it's a style of painting which gives the appearance of three-dimensional, or photographic realism. trompe l'oeil!!!

Yes, yes and again yes! This would be really funny and challenging!
Everyone chooses his/her own pic and adds some tricks,
and after some time (some days before the voting)
everyone edits his/her post and adds the original picture.

"and now for something completely different..." (Code Nothing) this would be great

02-18-2005, 04:17 AM
fundamentals week:

A still life: (an accident waiting to happen) or (white objects) <- the white objects one is tricky because nothing is realy white. Everything picks up reflected color.

Figurative Drawing: (focus on anitomical detail and accuracy.)

Color Theory: The same Illustration with 2 different color schemes that change the meaning, or mood of the piece.

Build the shot: Compose a scene from your favorate book, into a single illustration of how you would like to see it on screen. focus on lighting and composition. (Include a short reference from the book describing the scene.)

Shadow study: Use a single light source and multiple objects. arrange the objects so that they cast shadows over one another. The focus in this sketch is to show the difference between form shadows (a shadow that is soft and is on the "dark" side of the object. like the moon) and a Cast Shadow (a shadow that is sharp, and came "from" an object and is now laying cast accross another one.)

Drapery study: kinda self explanitory. Do a still life of a sheet hanging from something. or crumpled. Just give it interesting folds. For an advanced study use a model to wear the drapery. but emphisize the cloth, not the model.

Portraiture: It can be styalised, or realistic. Just emphisize a likeness of the model. (celebrities may be best, or include photos of models so we will know if they were successfull or not)

Re-invention of a classic (inspired by those crappy looking new Loony tunes - Lunatics, I'm sure the wonderful artists here could do a better job creating a new idea of something from pop culture)

Heh... I just came in here to post the same thing!:D

The most popular art thread I ever had at my own forums (which lured the wonderful Craig Mullins in, no less, gosh I still keep the portraits he did of me in a safe corner of my hard drive <3 ) was called Portrait-Picture.

What we did was let everyone who wanted to post photos of themselves, and anyone who wanted to, could join in and paint a portrait, referencing the photos in the thread. It was awesome. I would just love to see what this crowd could do with it. I'm just not sure if it's a one-day topic, but I'm going to have to suggest it anyway, one way or the other.

Portrait-Picture thread. If anyone else would be into it.

Hey, that's a great idea! Me too votes for it! :)

Contrast: Not only colors and tones, but composition. For example, put something scary in a beautiful sunny environment or turn a depressing environment to happy picture.

Avatar Night Club: Enough killing, stop this mindless destruction!! Lets dance and drink beers:)

UUUUGGGGHHHHH! Craig Mullins!? yet another reason to envy Enayla! Drat! :)
If i were you I'd print and frame those paintings and back them up on a few CD's....

but anyway, id like to make a 3rd vote for her idea. But do we all use one pic of one group member? or do we all post pics and just pic one? Id vote for the first. I'd like to see everyones portrait style of the same reference.

other suggestions for random topics....
