I am going to create a phoenix type bird that is pulling a holy ship through the skies. The sketches you see are of the boat, but I have yet to start on the bird. I will have a more finalized version this weekend for it would be a disaster if I didn't have a plan before I engaged in creating this model. Anyways, I created the sketches yesterday (Wednesday).
The woman and men (one symmetrical man on each side) are the figureheads of the boat. The men are holding the two chains/anchors to the phoenix. Right now, I am looking towards number 5, 7 and 8. They both meld well with the gothic theme.

Coments and suggestions are more then welcome:wavey:
Otherwise, I am certainly looking forward to participating in this contest.

Now THAT is how a pro makes concept sketches.
Very nice job with the outlines Apt P. I also like 5 and 7, but I also really dig 2 and 4. That sounds like an awesome concept of haveing the pheonix pulling a ship. The ship design IMO is reminding me of that air-ship from Final Fantasy (I think it was 9?) just a little.
This really looks interesting already. It loks like Diseney quality concept stuff. Great work so far!

July 20 Well, I finally finished working on my site (which is still not up) so now I have alot of time to devote to this cOoL contest. I started sketching some more and it is still in its rough stages, but gosh, this is going to be fun. . . crazy, but fun:p
Started on the back church and the hanging tower. It's not really as complicated as it looks because most of the things on the church can be duplicated many, many times. However, I am going to need ALOT of bump maps:p
I'll post more soon . . .

 O my !!!! Apt!!! This is pure architecture!!! Very very nice!!
Is your ship going to be like a flying cathedral? So maybe the owners are kind of misionary men? This is really very cool. I see you did your home work about renaissance style.
Even if you say this gonna have a lot of duplication all this details scare me. I mean so little time and so much to do. Well the truth is that i'm not the one to talk about this, i have to do a tree palace myself .
Whatever, this is going to be cool, i'm sure to see some regular awesome posting.
So keep going, .

Wow apt_P, annother fantastic drawing.
The church front and tower detail look incredable. I wouldn't be supprised if I found this drawing in one of DaVinci's sketch books. I think its that good.
I'm almost scared to see this in 3D because if it's 1/4 as beutiful as your drawings it's going to blow my work out of the water.
Great great drawings.

July 21 Damm it, I was suppose to have finished the boat by today. . . my brain is hurting . . . Zzzzzzzz
Oh well, I have to go out today and I won't be back until tomorow, So I'll finish up the figurehead, boat's name, and bird on monday.
And then Tuesday, Let the FUN begin!! (it's more like suicide, but hey . . . )

ZrO-1 -->Thanks for the encouragement. I'll try my best. However, at this point, I am just as scared as you are . . .
OrestesMantra --> Thanks. That challenge includes me though *sob*
Fedron --> I'm scared too, but that's not going to stop me from pushing on ahead with my battle plan. With every sketch, I invision how I am going to proceed with the model, and my hands are just . . . itching to start. Otherwise, yours is gonna be just as complicated as mine:p If only that other contest did not hold us up *sob* Well, I am sure we will have something .. .
Well, I am off to bed . . . Zzzzzzzz

July 21 Thanks Roman. Ya, I guess mine is kind of similar to FF9 at the moment . . . but only at the moment, the model is going to take on a severe change next week once I finish blocking in all the proportions. I have one trick up my sleeve that I am not going to say anything about because I don't know if I will have enough time to empliment it. But we'll see. ..
Here is a small update. I know, I am suppose to be sketching, but I couldn't help myself. I will reshow this image with the bump maps tomorow, I have to get back to sketching now *sigh*:wip: :wip: :wip:

Oh my friggin god.......:surprised
That last drawing is really beyond my comprehension. How the hell do you keep the perspective of each piece so perfect?
Just the clarity and care in those drawings alone shows that you are an amazing artist. The only thing that could keep you from dominating this challenge is if you are weak with your 3D app's tool set. If not, I'll be happy with second place ;) :D

July 22 Well, another update:
I have sketched the bird and now thorowly know how to model her (except for the iffy harness with the banners, I might have to change that:p) At least we still have two weeks. That should be enought to get something done.
I will have to revise my pics slightly for the 2d challenge, but that's another story.
ZrO-1 --> Thanks ^_^ This sketch is one of my best. Since this is my sixth contest, I decided to take her to the max. As to how I keep my perspective so clean, I have a nack for things linear. But I did have to modify the perspective boat in photoshop (distort things into place) and I also had to redraw those darn boats twice because my prilimenaries were such a big mess. Anyways, thanks for your continual support, I really appriciate it. Otherwise, your cowboy is coming along nicely too. it's been awhile since I saw your scene though, I can't wait to see the cowboy and beast together. Looking forward to it.
Gabe --> J'espere que j'aurais le temp de fini. En tout cas, je crois que ca vas etre ok. In two weeks, I'll have something:cool: hey, otherwise, I see that your beast/rhino is coming along very nicely. I can't wait to see him harnessed and added to your fantastic scene with the van. Keep it up!!

Haha :) Yeah man, I'm kind of surprised that i'm not dead drunk either... don't have much booze here anyway. It's a bitch.
About graphic cards, I've got one GeForce 2 GTS now, and I'm getting problems with it :( haven't got enough power to pull 3dsmax4 around. I will be getting myself a GeForce 4 TI4600, hopefully any day now... my goal is ofcourse the Quadro4 card from nVIDIA :D
Still, I will need a bit more powerful computer to take advantage of the power in it.
By the way... your drawings really ROCK! :)
I want to be a bit more innovative with my crits, but... I can't :D
You're damn skillful. Take care of that.

Hey Three. Personally, I got a geforce ti-3 at the moment and it only slows down horribly when you hit the million polygons mark (forget about seeing your mesh with four views). I am using a dual athlon so my computer eats through the mundane. But don't you hate being an artist, the hardware franchise makes sooooo much money off us artists *sob* I have to update almost every year. I can only wonder in awe to how much power your gonna get from you new card, I'm jealous:drool:
But thanks for the compliments Three and Erilaz. I have one more sketch to finish(the figure head), and then finally, after four days of planning, I can finally commence. I'm all excited,

HAHA! Nice to see that someone benefits from my thread
Hey... I actually partly fixed my graphics card now. I turned off my computer and poked a pen right into the fan... now everything is dandy :D [waiting for computer to collapse]... ah well, it seems that my computer actually is able to control all these polys now. Only a bit slow when I'm working with edges with end result on with a meshsmooth on top with iterations 2. :D this is actually a bit cool.
Yeah, graphic cards should be a whole lot cheeper for us poor people working with 3d... I mean, all the money goes for a really good 3dpackage... nothing more to spend on a monster PC :/
Man, it's getting a bit pressed on time now... hope that you're quick with your 3dsmax pack :D I know that I probably wouldn't be able to pull it off in such short time... I'm really crossing my fingers for you.
Cheers.

It's really strange... now the computer is slow when I start modeling... you know... a box is all it takes and then the computer REALLY slows down, and as soon as i make a couple of extrusions and add a meshsmoother it works like a clock... yesterday was a weird day. Time for me to go to bed... it's 0730 here. <yawn>

That is astounding man, really impressive, not only are your designs and drawings incredibly detailed and precise, at this point it looks as if your models will be as well. not sure if anyone's asked, but what software are you using? And out of curiosity, what's your modeling technique. If you modeled all of that out of a box... well, I am seriously impressed, otherwise I'm just very impressed. :buttrock:

Hey, thanks guys, I just woke up. My days start at 2 p.m and end at 9 in the morning :p
But I put together just a little pic showing you so far, how I created this. For the most part, I box model everything. Maybe 2 % of the time, I use splines (like for the A insignia). I use 3ds max r4 with no additional plugins except for the brazil rendering system. As for bump maps, I used a little this time around. If you look carefully (sorry about the quick render and small size) you will see a small variant between the initial straight version with no bump maps and then the folded one with the bump maps turned on.
But I really appriciate the continual support. "I won't dissapoint" (< --- Note, I usually say this to add a ton of pressure to myself. I use any source of inspirtation to kick my ass in gear:p It's the best way to push yourself heeheheheh *sob*)
I will have another update tomorrow morning if not sooner, thanks again :) :)

Another Update,
I should be working on the church, but I branched off and started working on the middle section instead:p I will get medieval on the church as soon as I finish the mid stuff (I am going to put cannons in heheeheh). Until then . . . (note, I notice that I have a few proportional issues, i.e the turbine engine casket is so thick, it's dwarfing everything else. But I will fix this towards the end when the final corrections commence)
Mattman --> Pheonix? oh boy, I will try. The part that has me worried is the figure head on the boat. When I hit that, work will come to a stand still. But, we will see. Thanks.
Joebount --> :cool: Thanks.
Crash --> the trueth is, although you see alot of details, the statues and stuff are not entirelly anatomically correct. That would be like painting a tea cup in the window of a 20 story building pictured from 2 blocks away. I create just enough details to pass it off as believable, but dont expect any "extreme" closeups:p As for the architecture, well, I use reference for that. I look at famous buildings and create something of my own through that. That is how we learn, and artists 'do' need to expand on there base knowledge so we can become even more creative in our approaches. But yup, if your asking if I modelled everything, yup. And so far, it took 3 days :(
Dmcgrath --> Thanks, it means alot. I'll keep pushing.
Tubby --> thanks buddy, hey, I have seen an update from you recently, I am anxious to see your bird rigged and up and running. You too, keep up the good work!!

hi, thats really amazing apt pupil.. *how do you do that*? im fairly new to 3d... do you actually connect all those pillars and stuff to the arm rails and stuff*with vetex welding?* or are they separate pieces? would love to see a tutorial sometime .. keep going cant wait to see more!
Apt Pupil
07-27-2002, 06:32 PM
Hey there Nikodemus,
I don't recommend welding all the vertex's if you were to create something like mine :p Because then you would have to create everything manually instead of mass duplicating everything with the instance feature (copy, or mirror, and check instance). If you do it this way, then when ever you have to change all the pillars, you just have to modify one, and presto, they all mold the same way. So to answer your question, it's all bit's and pieces:)
And I am not sure but I will mention two other tidbit I just freaking found out myself:)
1: When you have an item or object at an angle, don't try to modify it (moves vertexs and such) at that angle. Create a copy that is "intanced," align that copy properly, and then modify it and see the changes happen to your original item. (*sob* this would have saved me quite some time if I knew about this before I started)
2: The difference between an "edit poly" and an "edit mesh" is that if you plan to slice and dice your model, for the love of McDonalds, use the "edit poly." All the cuts and slices will not generate 'random' vertexs everywhere (70% of the time) like the "edit mesh does." (another feature I just found out *sob*)
There, now with this, you are ready to take on the world heheheheh. I hope this helped, and perhaps, I will see some work from you in the near future. Good Luck  and thanks for the compliments.

Ok, well, the church is 98% done. Just have to make the connection piece that holds all the ropes on top and then I have to work on it's surrounding floor area. As for that last two renders I showed you, the mistakes you saw there are corrected (the hole in the back of the top mantle piece[in the back view] and the railing that did not quite reach all the way to the bridge)
Oh, and I changed just a few things. I put the towers at a slant (they seemed awkward just hanging straight out) and I made the main window larger then the side windows. As for the details, I simplyfied them just a tad from my original sketch.
Well, I know one thing, the Ascendant will be finished on time. And as for the pheonix, well, we shall see. ..
Mikael P. --> YOu want me to turn off the rendering . . . hmmmm, this is probably going to be the look I will go for for my final renderings. Butl, I guess I could render one without any effects, I'll have one ready for tomorow:)

silly me, the first time I saw this thread the only thing that was done were the concepts and I just thought "oh a realy nice looking concept for the 2d challange" asuming right away you were just going to add color to the concept image.
But you did me wrong! :P
This is what I call overdoing the detail in every way :argh:
My favorite work in this challange without a doubt

:) No I do not want you to turn off your rendering. I just thought it might be an idea, as your previous pictures has been in such low resolution. And you were complaining on the time it took.
This latest one though, looks really nice. Looking forward to the detail shoots.
The only suggestion that struck me when I studied your picture. Was to maybe add some gargoyles or other type of structure at the corners of the building. To collect the water flowing down. A normal drainpipe. But as it is a ship it might look strange.

Hey, wow, thanks guys for the encouragement. I will respond to your comments shortly. I know I promised to show "better renderings" but. . . forget about it :) But I will show you some more shots.
I corrected a few issues since yesterday (missing holy sign on left window, railings were to low, top three church inclaves were to far back, etc.) I also added a bird on top of the church, and worked on the ships mid pole thingy. Today, I am going to start working on the front of the ship and I am going to save the middle part of the ship for last (adding cannons and engravings etc.)
I also left my house today to retrieve some feathers for preperation for the pheonix. Gosh, I hope I have the time.
So here is a full picture(the first of "five" tonight) of where I am so far.

You give us these teeny weeny renders. How are we supposed to be able to admire the work you´ve put into it? The minimum size you should be posting now on is 1280x1024.
You have a whole four days left, so you might be able to finish it with a tad less sleep than usual. Good Luck. (aint they beautiful those deadlines).

Micheal P. Deadlines, no problem. Since I only started modeling last Tuesday, there is no doubt in my mind that I will finish :p (except for the pheonix) But yup, my name is Swedish, unfortuantly, I never learned the language

The problem is, there is a 50 k limit. When I post larger pictures, I have to comprimise on the quality yet again. I won't link it from my hosts site because that is unstable, hence, I am probably going to have to hand in a 640 x 480 image for my final

:argh: :argh: This life modeling is ToUgH!!! Sorry for the lack of updates, but I am having some problems here. But, I finally figured out how to moderately portray folds and hair in at least a half decent way . . . I never modeled a real life character before. The good part is, I guess modeling the man will go faster now that I understand what . . . NOT to do:p
She's already rigged but she will change colors and I will add additional bump maps to help accentuate her folds.
Thanks guys for the continual support, I really appreciate it. I still got what, three days left, well. . . some of my best work is done in the last minute hehehehe

Interesting. But aren´t those wings on the wrong side of the keel? Would it not look better if they were sitting on her back? Probably a matter of taste, but it looks a bit wierd.
Have you thought of how you are going to weigh the front of the picture with the same amount of detail as you are going to have in the back? Because I assume you are going to portray your scene from this angle?
A slight bump to show the planks on the boat too?
Good Work!

Mikael P. Patience, you'll see:) I am aware of just how bad it looks right now, I was hesitant to post it at such an early stage. But, I just thought I'd show you where I am now. (But right now as it stands, yes, wings are running through the keel, dress is not connected to her body, man is missing wings, there is a missing man on the other side of the ship etc. .. lots to do :argh: )

Beautiful.
And for once, I have a small crit to give! So rare for this great model.
The arms of the man on the front of the boat. What's going on there? It doesn't look right. Might be the angle, but they don't seem as well formed as the womans arms. Sort of like plasticine.
Still, great work. All the pieces are coming together.:D
