i am planning to buy a laptop and do some things with maya 6 in it. just modifying or learning more, not actuar rendering.

i was wondering if anybody had any experiences that would like to share.

is ati mobility radeon 16mb good enough to play around in maya6?

what about specific recommendations?

i dont want a heavy or huge laptop so what do you recommend?

i like the vaio z1. is it good enough for graphics?

Hi,
my friend has a simple toshiba satellite with some poor intel extreme card with windows xp and maya 6 is running ok, no problems, maybe with some high poly object work could be impossible but it should be ok for some basic stuff or even more. i don't have much experience with working on laptops but i think more you pay the better performance you'll get. sometimes you can have the same configuration and maya can behave different
so it would be the best simply try to run maya and test it. bye:)

i don't know this for fact, but i would say no on the 16meg card. mine has 32, and it barely keeps up. if can afford 64 or higher, i think you'll have a much better time with it.

I recently got the IBM t41p and its works fine for Maya (dynamics, modeling and rendering). Actually better than the computers I have to use at school (2ghz Pentium 4s). It has the fire GL t2 with 128 megs of video ram. Its small around 5lbs and about 1 inch thick, 14 inch screen (1400x1040), 1.7ghz cpu, 1.5 gb ram and a quick 7200 rpm 60gb hard drive... basically its the best I could find in a small form factor... cost wasn't chap though, but well worth it in my opinion. IBM is going to release the t42p at the end of may (2ghz processor, 15inch screen and the rest is the same)... My vote goes with the IBM.

I got the best deal at Euclid Computers (http://www.euclidcomputers.com/frameset.cgi?finditem+laptop+IBM+2373GGU) originally for around $3000, guess its gotten cheaper since then $2660. Oh yeah, I bought the extra Gig of memory from an online retailer, IBM charges too much.

Good luck.

I'm running a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop when I'm away from home and maya 6 runs just fine :) but I did get a 64mb graphics card too...

Company I work for got me a dell precision M60, pentium M 1.7 ghz, 1gig ram (boo I want more!) and a Quadro Fx Go700 (128MB). The machine is a bit on the heavy side, screen is huge for a laptop but it kicks serious ass.

i run maya on a custom buiilt 3GHz P4 laptop with a gig of ram and a Radeon 9000 w 128mb of ram. it runs alright. but ATI and maya aren't friends anyway.

the toshiba with the intel...i dont know. how can somebody say that the intel is just running fine and the next post says that 32mb dedicated is not enough, maybe 64 or more!!!

so how can i know?

I would prefer a light laptop, that's why i want a laptop.

IBMs are too ugly in my opinion.

Dells too big and heavy.

Any other laptop like the sony vaio z1 but faster if this one is not good enough?
