View Full Version : Speed modeling session : theme : scifi/fantasy vehicles
This session runs until monday, June the 1st. You have to model any kind of vehicle in a fantasy / sci-fi theme, and you have 4 hours to work on it (so focus on the overall shape and style rather than details).
Post a wip image after 2 hours of work on it and a final image after up to 4 hours composed of different views of the model and level0 wireframes.
Please read the speed modeling forum rules (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=124788) before posting.
Have fun!

Well, this is my first speed modeling entry. This is after 2 hours. It's still a WIP though, so any suggestions? It's a solar powered flying vehicle.

Hello fellas!
Me and some friends gave this speed session a try tonight. Here is my result after 2 hours of modelling. Not fancy enough I think, but here it is. Looks like some kind of sci-fi ant or something like that.

and, 2 more hours... didn't get too much done... playing with a way to attach the tail "feathers", but wasted too much time.
it's supposed to be a space flight/speeder type thing... high speed, high manuverability, zero weapons. i think i really like this concept, though, so i'm gonna clean up the mesh and continue working on this one

I did the paneling just selecting the faces (as you can see in the 3rd capture) and doing a bevel (with an inverse value). This is easier to do with a poly object than with an editable mesh in 3dmax...

I figure that this thing would be powered by these large motorized fans and hover above the ground. The original design incorperated spider like legs that folded up on the deck and would be used in docking procedures.
This is the first speed modeling session I participated in and I have t say that it was a great way to practice.

2 hours:

didn't like the first 4 hr result (F-16 cockpit) and went back and removed some of the features shown above and rebuilt the form. the backstep added a little time, but got me closer to the doodle i was working toward.

csVen> if you have maya, It seems to be an easier way to model than Pro/E 2001, don't you think? Just my opinion, of course.
Telémaco
csven
05-29-2004, 12:08 PM
just practice. some things easier in Maya. some easier in Pro/E. eg I can now go and change the very first profile curve and everything will update. take about 10 seconds. or i can hit one button and the number and shape of the pattern on the bottom will change/update automatically. the elipse indent on the sides can be infinitely tweaked with almost no effort.
but you're right in that it does take much longer to model organic shapes in most CAD. there is a pure surfacing modeler tool inside Pro/E called ISDX - but i didn't use it for this (some clients i send files too want it done the old way).
i chose Pro 2001 b/c the early datcode release i received was buggy and i stuck with an earlier version called 2000i2. now it's on a much-friendlier version but not everyone uses that yet. alot of clients use 2001 still, so i recently got an updated release of Pro 2001 (i.e. the software releases with versions - 2000i, 2000i2, 2001, Wildfire - but within each version is a datecode for each variation). 2001's interface is a little different than the others so i need a little practice finding things.
[*edit: thought i would demonstrate. took only a couple minutes to modify 3 profile curves, change pattern on bottom from 5 to 7, changed location/shape of ellipse on side, changed cutout on back, and modified a couple of rounds. it's a parametric model so every feature is built on top of another and history can be modified, rearranged, etc....(within reason). you can see the modification image in the lower left of the four screenshot composite.]
Telemaco
05-29-2004, 02:03 PM
My opinion is that in 3D -like in another faces of the Art- it's needed some courage to do things without way-back. I deeply believe in an undo-only-for-errors, not like a rectification tool. Because of this, i do not trust in parametric tools and/or styles, but accept this as a lack of me, not yours.

I started this without a concept drawing but with the intention of modeling a believeable sci-fi military vehicle within the four hour time limit.
created entirely from imagination...no reference materials of any kind...except memory of similar real world vehicles.
The wires are after 3 hours. The model was started in Maya 5.0 and then transferred to 3ds max 4.2 so that I could apply a quick "greeble" to the body panels...the colour renders are the model at 4 hours.
I will be putting the finishing touches to this model...some more varied detail and will post its progress on the 3D WIPS forum and final renders in 3d gallery

thought i would do another. this time half in CAD and half in Maya. the CAD took a little longer than expected so those images are at 2 1/2 hours. the one object exports out at around 188k tri's (dup'd twice in Maya). the remaining time in Maya was to make organic shapes that hold these parts together. didn't quite get there...

here is my image. I suck at doing those fancy looking GI renders with wings3d or blender3d [hardly ever use Blender] But here is the model
358 Polygons, 723 edges, 367 vertices. This model is ofcourse subdivided.
This is around on hour into the game. I had many many many ideas in my head. A cartoony shrek look, and I got the idea from one of my friend's who wes saying he'd date that girl if pigs start flying. So, I got the idea from that. The creature also has a tail..
It is usually used by the peasants of the village who cannot afford a dragon which can be obtained for 200 gold coins. That is ofcourse not the top of line dragon. The top of line usually costs around 1000 gold coins.
Hutchings are usually a lot cheaper and preferred by those who are not very financially stable.

Here is my contribution, I just started goin with it, took about 3 hours with some technical dificulties in there. Its a helicopter type of thing with both an upper and lower deck, i started working on blades for the top but suffered a crash, so im just throwing it up now, maybe I will come back to it later.
Next time I plan on doing some sketches so I dont have as much trouble deciding what to do during modeling.
